    appropriate to the era of the two buildings The audio component of the video is comprised of two musical sound tracks which overlap and draw the viewers attention to individual sequences One hears music by the mid 19th century black piano prodigy Blind Tom played by John Davis which corresponds to the Coffin House and for the Gropius House the music of American jazz composer Albert Ayler In Gallery 2 there is a new dual channel video installation Blue to Black which depicts an argument between two women The actresses were given only general direction and much of the dialogue is spontaneous The video on the left shows the women inside a building on the right we see the building s exterior through a window in which the women can be seen but not heard arguing The sound in the gallery is localized so that the viewer hears the argument and a voiceover giving direction to the actresses if one stands in front of the recording of the interior scene Cloudscape in Gallery 1 is a 16mm black and white film presented on a monitor of a man whistling an American composition from the late 1800s It recalls Simpson s video Easy to Remember 2001 which was included in the 2002 Whitney Biennial Simpson s recent solo exhibitions have included Lorna Simpson 31 Mary Leigh Block Museum of Art Northwestern University Evanston IL Lorna Simpson Consejo Nacional Para la Cultura y las Artes Mexico City Mexico Lorna Simpson Irish Museum of Modern Art Dublin Ireland and Lorna Simpson Cameos and Appearances and Lorna Simpson 31 Whitney Museum of American Art New York Recent group exhibitions have included Open House Working in Brooklyn The Brooklyn Museum of Art Brooklyn Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea Santiago de Compostela Spain Public Private Tumatanui

    and structures and as a result are more highly abstracted than his previous work For example Thiel has extensively photographed rebar substructures for flooring before the concrete is poured over it These rebar grids reference an abstract tradition closely linked to minimalism and have a painterly quality that recalls the work of Agnes Martin Robert Ryman and Donald Judd Another group of work documents the ceiling revealed in the Palast der Republik the former seat of the East German Parliament in Berlin which was closed shortly after the re unification because it contained asbestos This extraordinary building closed for many years will most likely be destroyed in the near future due to the inordinate cost of renovation There is much debate regarding the future of this site which is symbolically emotionally and politically very loaded Whilst he has photographed Berlin for over ten years Thiel s monumental works are not mere documentation but picture a city reborn after a tumultuous history Thiel refers to Berlin as suffering from an overdose of history Yet it does not suffer from its sediments like other European cities but from the ongoing consequences of its eruptions The architectural space in these photographs not only reflects a turbulent social and political history but comments upon the emergence of new patterns of urban existence Thiel has exhibited widely in museums and galleries worldwide his works are included in the collections of many prominent international museums Recent solo exhibitions include the Kunstverein Ludwigsburg Germany SK 76 2 Mp XIII Art Unlimited Art32 Basel Switzerland IMAGO 99 Universidad de Salamanca Centro de Fotografia Patio de Escuelas Spain Thiel s works have been included in Embracing the Present The UBS Art Collection Portland Art Museum OR which traveled to The Boca Raton Museum of Art FL Austin Museum of

    is an enormous dinner table with an apple in the middle and twenty place settings The text to the right of each place setting explains one way to get the apple while a drawing to the left of each plate illustrates the method The various ways to get the apple include schemes that are philosophical magical psychological and linguistic among others and could be perceived as various conceptual modes of appropriation The work could also be interpreted as a commentary on unfulfilled promise and the irony of human intellectual endeavors Gallery 2 has been transformed into two rooms in a children s hospital by an installation called The Children s Hospital In each room the sound of music and a story being told emanates from small model theaters adjacent to the bed each of which tells a different fable Designated one of the world s 10 greatest living artists by ARTnews Ilya Kabakov has been making installation art since 1984 becoming not only one of the medium s most important practitioners but also one of its most significant theoreticians and the leading figure of the Russian art movement of the 1980s known as Moscow Conceptualism Kabakov was born in Dnepropetrovsk
