    Abramovic s concern with creating works that ritualize the simple actions of everyday life like lying sitting dreaming and thinking in effect the manifestation of a unique mental state As a vital member of the generation of pioneering performance artists that includes Bruce Nauman Vito Acconci and Chris Burden Abramovic created some of the most historic early performance pieces and is the only one still making important durational works The House with the Ocean View is a public living installation for the first twelve days of the exhibition Abramovic will fast following a strictly defined regimen in three specially constructed living units in the main gallery space For this unique and challenging performance the gallery will have special hours see below to facilitate repeated attendance by the public as their presence is integral to the work Dream Bed is a sculpture which visitors are contractually invited to use for one complete hour Each user will thus participate in the ritualization of sleep dreaming and or lying The public s involvement parallels Abramovic s commitment in The House with the Ocean View Appointments to use Dream Bed can be made by contacting the gallery Stromboli a single channel 30 minute video is named for the island south of Sicily that is the only permanently active volcano in Europe and has experienced small eruptions approximately every 15 minutes for the last 2000 years In the video the artist lies at the edge of the ocean between land and sea her head moving in response to the waves Marina Abramovic born in 1946 in Belgrade Yugoslavia is without question one of the seminal artists of our time She was awarded the Golden Lion for Best Artist at the 1997 Venice Biennale for her extraordinary video installation performance piece Balkan Baroque Her work is

    large scale sculptures and a series of new photographic works The installation in the first gallery constitutes a new direction in her work incorporating moving imagery and water whilst in the main gallery Horn orchestrates three important new mechanical sculptures In a group of new photoworks Horn utilizes a camera that double exposes each frame She then overpaints the picture and re photographs them resulting in complex overlaid fragmented images that are enigmatic poetic and deeply intriguing Rebecca Horn born in Germany in 1944 is without question one of the seminal artists of our time Her work which ranges over a wide variety of media including film performance installation photography and sculpture addresses themes of perception philosophy and communication The employment of such wide ranging interests as science and alchemy the rational and the intuitive the mechanical and the sensual has occurred repeatedly in her work over the last three decades and resulted in one of the most distinct and individual oeuvres in the art world Horn has participated in the Venice Biennale the Biennale of Sydney and is one of very few artists whom have been selected to participate in Documenta on four separate occasions Horn s work is

    Santo s exhibition is comprised of wall installations recent sculptural works and new pieces commissioned specifically for this exhibition In the sculpture entitled Correction 2001 the artist takes the natural forms of solid granite blocks and applies cuts that follow the veins of the stones turning them into geometric polyhedrons and thereby cultural artifacts Espírito Santo is particularly interested in the way his work lends itself to architecture and vice versa In untitled keyhole 2002 the polished black surface of the granite reflects the exhibition space Four glass sculptures from the Restless series also make use of reflective surfaces to invoke a sense of displacement in the viewer In two large wall drawings the artist deals with ideas of abstraction and representation using natural and cultural patterns he appropriates Parallel Forest is a gigantic barcode its black bars made of a wood grain pattern incised directly into the wall Ambiguity plays a central role in the work the artist transforms industrial design items such as Phillipe Starck lamps and old fashioned candlesticks into iconic minimalist sculptures Espírito Santo has exhibited widely in museums and galleries worldwide his works are included in the collections of many prominent international museums including the
