    prints The photographs are arranged serially as if mimicking storyboards for an imagined cinematic project Indeed taken en masse they could be viewed cumulatively as a non narrative proposal for an imaginary film project The texts accompanying the photographs appear to refer to an interior monologue associated with the sitter at the same time they seem to allude to modes of photographic portraiture and it s presentation Individually the photo works are powerful new pieces that demonstrate clear thematic links with several earlier bodies of work which Simpson has produced in the two decades of her influential career thus far In the fall of 2002 The Whitney Museum of American Art and The Studio Museum in Harlem are collaborating on a Simpson exhibition that will tour in America and Europe Also in 2002 Phaidon will publish a substantial monograph with essays by Thelma Golden Deputy Director for Exhibitions and Programs at The Studio Museum in Harlem Chrissie Iles Curator of Film and Video at The Whitney Museum of American Art and Kellie Jones Yale University Assistant Professor This year Simpson was commissioned to design The Whitney Museum American Art Award sponsored by Cartier and the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art Scenarios Recent Work by Lorna Simpson traveled to the Walker Art Center Minneapolis MN and the University of Michigan Museum of Art Ann Arbor MI Simpson was included in several group exhibitions in 2001 and 2000 including A Way With Words Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art Whitney Museum of American Art at Philip Morris New York NY InSite2000 San Diego CA and I m Thinking of a Place UCLA Armand Hammer Museum Los Angeles CA In 1999 Simpson s work was included in Open Ends Actual Size The Museum of Modern Art NY and The 46th Biennial

    and societal structure His most recent works depict detailed architectural constructions of communal and historical spaces that are paradoxically abandoned and solitary As UCLA Professor Anthony Vidler writes Casebere s spatial unconscious is in photographic representation an opening through vision into the psychopathology of lived space a space that blurs all the traditional distinctions between the space and the space represented The exhibition will include works from 1999 to the present which are being shown in New York for the first time Casebere s latest works are inspired by Thomas Jefferson s utopian Monticello the indigenous architecture of the Caribbean island of Nevis traditional Japanese architecture and an imagined gallery space In these works Casebere conceptually articulates the revelation of an implied future for architectural space a space at once of our unconscious and our lived reality that describes the fragile treaty between the two To coincide with the exhibition Sean Kelly Gallery in conjunction with Charta Editions Milan will publish a two hundred page monograph on Casebere s work titled James Casebere the Spatial Unconscious with essays by Professor Anthony Vidler of UCLA freelance writer Chris Chang and Jeffrey Eugenides author of The Virgin Suicides The catalogue will also

    of the English Channel looking west Across the Atlantic Ocean he photographed the sea from the Nova Scotia coast and from the northeastern most point of the continental United States looking east across the Atlantic For example a diptych includes one photograph that was made in Plymouth England near the Mayflower Steps the site from which the Mayflower was launched the other was taken at Plymouth Massachusetts not far from Plymouth Rock where the Mayflower landed In the Old World he looks west toward the future while in America the gaze east is directed at the past By investigating the migration of early Americans Cooper s photographs of the sea evoke a sense of time and place as the pilgrims experienced it The early Europeans desire to discover a new world in quest of paradise while maintaining a sense of nostalgia and loss for their homeland is symbolized by the space that they passed through on their journey Cooper s photographs subtly capture the meditative and metaphorical quality of that in between space Using an 1898 field camera Cooper composes his images so that the scale of the composition is not always immediately apparent The printing of the pieces further enhances the intense and emotive nature of his work Cooper s technical mastery of the photographic medium is renowned The images are subtly under painted chemically by laying down tones of blue and maroon subsequent to the photographic printing process This orchestrates and directs the viewers gaze in a particularly sophisticated compositional fashion Cooper s editions are usually limited to a maximum of three prints however his painterly process ensures that each print is effectively unique Thomas Joshua Cooper was born in San Francisco in 1946 Cooper is a member of the Cherokee nation on his father s side and
