    Contemporary Art s Marie Fraser centers on the artist s exploration of observation as a vehicle for manufacturing reality and enforcing systems of power URANIBORG will be on view from May 22 through September 23 2012 and will subsequently travel to the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art A forthcoming catalogue which will feature a number of essays as well as a conversation between Marta Gili and Laurent Grasso will accompany the exhibition URANIBORG features videos sculptures paintings and drawings by Laurent Grasso that explore observation of the heavens surveillance political ghosts and deceptive beauty The exhibition which draws inspiration from Michel Foucault s notion of de individualized power and the panopticon highlights Grasso s interest in the uncertain relation between time and temporality as well as the mechanisms of paranoia ambiguity belief rationality fiction and truth In an architectural gesture that underscores these concepts in his work Grasso transformed the normally open space of the Jeu de Paume galleries by constructing a long windowed corridor that segments the space and dramatically alters the viewer s experience of the works From inside the corridor the viewer can see only glimpses of the works in the exhibition that they later are able

    viewer to interrogate their relationship to and interaction with space As Gormley explains There is a double bind here We have a real choice of how we wish to participate We can stay in an underworld or climb skywards Both scenarios put the human subject into a dynamic position of jeopardy Horizon Field Hamburg which will be on view from April 27 through September 9 2012 will provoke an experience of re orientation and re connection with walking feeling hearing and seeing Visitors will enter the north hall of the Deichtorhallen into an exhibition space that is enormous and virtually empty or as Gormley describes a space that is utterly clear we see a void clean building re imagined as a kind of gymnasium for mind and body In this open space a vast black and reflective structure will float above the floor the suspended slightly oscillating platform exploits the structural potential and architectural context of the Deichtorhallen building now over a century old taking visitors into a new spatiotemporal matrix The space below the work will be in shadow sparsely illuminated by the light from the skylights far above Here visitors can linger and listen to the steps and
