  • Sean Kelly Gallery - Kehinde Wiley joins the Sean Kelly Gallery News
black subjects in the history of western European portrait painting As a young child visiting the collection of the Huntington Library outside of Los Angeles Wiley longed for a connection to a visual history that included people of color Not finding it he created it himself by painting portraits of young black men models he hand picked from crowds in neighborhoods like Harlem placing them in the vernacular of artists such as Ingres and Titian While painting his models in the poses of figures from classical portraiture Wiley depicted his subjects wearing their own clothes from contemporary hip hop culture Classical European portraiture was traditionally reserved as a showpiece for the wealthy to highlight their success Wiley subverted this by using the old masters approach to light and grand scale to give a voice to young men in urban settings who did not enjoy the same sense of power and wealth as their European antecedents Wiley contextualized the highly fetishized jewelry and clothing worn in hip hop culture within the tradition of classical portrait painting thereby making an indelible link between these otherwise disparate subjects Wiley inserted a rightful place for black youth in what had previously been an almost exclusively white domain By intentionally obfuscating and blurring the lines between appropriation and homage Wiley developed a fresh and unique conceptual dialogue Continuing to push the boundaries of his unique artistic vision in an increasingly global manner Wiley created the World Stage series in 2007 expanding the reach of his subject matter to include models from China Africa Brazil India Sri Lanka and forthcoming Israel Wiley who divides his time between studios in New York Dakar and Beijing has expanded his oeuvre to include sculpture and video Sean Kelly Gallery is in the process of developing a major new project
