  • Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Lens Review
    The lens is mindbogglingly wide your frames will include pretty much everything from the tips of your toes to the clouds above your head So if you are composing your frame around a main object try to get as close to it as possible otherwise you will end up with asubject lost in the distance with basically not a single detail preserved Seriously take a look at the street shot with the Borders book store in the image gallery below the distance to the store is about 30ft 10m this should give you an idea of the extreme perspective the lens delivers The lens showcased pretty good overall performance in the field Images were sharp across the frame pretty much throughout the tested aperture range on both APS C as well as full frame cameras Well technically speaking the lens did actually show slightly softer results around extreme corners which can be mostly attributed to the barrel distortion This can be easily observed in closeup photography where objects in the near plane tend to get distorted more noticeably and less so at the infinity in the general landscape type shots for which the lens obviously was designed in the first place So all in all results are quite good Vignetting f 2 8 full frame vs 1 6x crop 14mm As expected from such a wide lens Canon EF 14mm f 2 8L II USM shows quite a noticeable vignetting at f 2 8 on a full frame body Vignetting continues to persist through f 5 6 albeit at lower levels Beyond that color falloff is basically non existent And on an APS C camera vignetting is already quite minimal at f 2 8 and practically invisible at f 4 and beyond Like most wide angle primes Canon EF 14mm f 2 8L II USM also fell prone to some flare in certain harsh lightning conditions The shots below demonstrate a situation when a strong direct light source positioned close to the picture frame The sun in the samples was hitting the lens at 45 degrees from the right hand corner You can notice that the flare has noticeably reduced image contrast in the right hand corner which is something to be expected with pretty much any lens But in addition to the lower contrast the lens also shows pretty noticeable ghosting both wide open as well as at lower aperture settings Top ISO 100 1 10000 f 2 8 Bottom ISO 100 1 125 f 8 Canon 5D Aside from vignetting and flare color handling was quite decent Colors were sufficiently saturated and the palette remained quite neutral Images carried good amount of contrast throughout the tested aperture range however the lens did show minor degree of color fringing You can observe sagittal aberration around the door panes in the image crop below And as mentioned above like most wide angles Canon EF 14mm f 2 8L II USM exhibited noticeable barrel distortion although the amount of distortion seemed

    since the front element does not rotate during focusing you will be able to attach a polarizing filter to the front of the lens Manufacturer s box contains Canon EF 20mm f 2 8 USM lens front and rear caps and warranty registration card The lens is compatible with Canon s EF 12 II and EF 25 II Extension Tubes and also accepts gelatin filters with an optional Gelatin Holder Adapter Summary Lens Composition 11 elements in 9 groups Angular Field 94 degrees Minimum Focus 25cm 0 8ft Focusing Action AF MF USM f stop Scale f 2 8 f 22 camera controlled Filter Size 72mm Lens Hood EW 75II optional Weight 405g 14 3oz Dimensions 77 5x70 6mm 3 1x2 8 Lens Case LP1214 optional Field Tests This is one lens that is rather hard to characterize in a few sentences because of a somewhat uneven overall performance Image quality was reasonably good under some circumstances Note here the word some On APS C type camera images were visibly soft at f 2 8 around borders and on a full frame body they were even softer Quality did improve somewhat with stopped down aperture but there s no magic here most lenses are sharper when stopped down and Canon EF 20mm f 2 8 USM is not really an exception here Color rendition was more or less accurate but images lacked contrast Vignetting f 2 8 full frame vs 1 6x crop Vignetting was somewhat on a higher end at f 2 8 with a full frame camera and less so with an APS C one but gradually got better and was pretty minimal at f 4 and beyond The lens also showed visible barrel distortion which while expected from such a wide angle lens is still disappointing The lens was also prone to flare at the widest aperture setting AF was pretty accurate and fast throughout the tested aperture settings Canon EF 20mm f 2 8 USM image gallery Lab Tests Please note that MTF50 results for APS C and Full Frame cameras are not cross comparable despite the same normalized 0 1 range used to report results for both types of cameras Canon APS C Canon EF 20mm f 2 8 USM showed somewhat mixed results in the lab Center performance was outstanding from f 2 8 throughout the tested aperture range peaking at f 5 6 Unfortunately border performance is rather disappointing it s not the worst I have seen but certainly is not inspiring either for a fixed focal lens that is At its best the lens would give you outstanding 11in and decent 16in and 19in prints which is a decent performance except that we expect more from a prime lens these days Conclusion Combination of excellent center and average border performance makes it hard to render a definitive decision The lens should probably remain on your maybe list until you find an alternative that clearly outperforms Canon EF 20mm f 2 8 USM

  • Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens Review
    f 1 4 24mm Canon 5D The lens produced well rounded out of focus highlight when shot at wide open aperture The highlights often carried harshly defined outlines which is common to lenses with over correction for spherical aberration There was no sign of double edging around back fore ground OOF objects and contrast transitions were pretty smooth helping improve isolation of the in focus subjects ISO 100 1 8000 f 1 4 24mm Canon 5D ISO 100 1 250 f 8 24mm Canon 5D Remember the whole hoopla about Sub Wavelength Coating naming Well turns out that setting aside a rather awkward naming the new coating actually does improve handling of flare The two shots above demonstrate probably one of the worst possible scenarios with a strong direct light source positioned right within the picture frame Contrast levels in these shots are obviously drastically condensed which is not that surprising Aside from that however behavior is quite decent absent are ghosting striping rainbowing etc although you can notice some color fringing in the shadow of the flower in the lower right corner of the picture Vignetting f 1 4 full frame vs APS C The lens showed pretty noticeable vignetting at its widest aperture setting when used on a full frame camera This is not really that surprising considering that a rare f 1 4 lens would not vignette with wide open aperture As you stop down the lens vignetting levels are reduced and by f 4 light fall off is pretty minimal What is more surprising however is that on an APS C camera the lens showed a pretty minimal amount of vignetting even at f 1 4 By f 2 pretty much all traces of vignetting were gone You can notice a minor degree of color fringing with traces of both axial as well as sagittal chromatic aberration seen in the cropped image below around the flower pot in the center as well as in the shot of a street performer in the sample image gallery Aside from this rather very mild artifact color reproduction was quite good with color palette remaining pretty neutral and images carrying good amount of contrast and saturation One of the most typical artifacts in wide angle lenses is distortion typically barrel distortion for wide angles and this is where the lens delivers the biggest surprise Canon EF 24mm f 1 4L II USM shows practically no distortion at all Naturally 24mm is not the widest possible rectilinear focal length available on the market Canon Nikon Tamron and others have even wider primes and zooms but the sheer fact that there is no need to deal with distortion in postprocessing should be quite appealing to many users ISO 100 1 8000 f 1 4 24mm 100 crop Title Title Title Title Title Title Title Title Title Title Title Title Title Title Title Title Title View the embedded image gallery online at http slrlensreview com web reviews canon lenses canon wide angle 597

    Canon s Extension Tubes EF 12 II and EF 25 II and accepts Gelatin Holder Adapters III and IV The factory box includes Canon EF 24mm f 1 4L USM lens front and rear caps EW 83DII petal shaped lens hood LP1214 soft case manual and registration card Summary Lens Composition 11 elements in 9 groups Angular Field 84 degrees Minimum Focus 25cm 0 82ft Focusing Action AF MF USM f stop Scale f 1 4 f 22 camera controlled Filter Size 77mm Lens Hood EW 83DII included Weight 550g 19 4oz Dimensions 83 5x77 4mm 3 3x3 1 Lens Case LP1214 included Field Tests Canon EF 24mm f 1 4L USM produced solid results in the field The lens was tack sharp in the center on both APS C and FF cameras across entire tested aperture range Borders were noticeably softer at wide aperture levels f 1 4 especially which should not come as a surprise since we re dealing with a super fast ultra wide lens here AF system was reasonably fast and accurate As is common with most Canon lenses reproduced colors were somewhat on a warmer side Vignetting f 1 4 full frame vs 1 6x crop The lens shows noticeable vignetting on a full frame camera at the widest aperture level which is reduced by f 2 and becomes pretty much non existent once stopped down to f 2 8 The lens does not exhibit any noticeable vignetting straight from f 1 4 Unfortunately the lens produced color fringing pretty much across the frame and fell prone to flare at f 1 4 amounts of both color fringing as well as flare are reduced with stopped down apertures ISO 100 1 4000 f 1 4 24mm 100 crop Canon EF 24mm f 1 4L USM image gallery Lab Tests Please note that MTF50 results for APS C and Full Frame cameras are not cross comparable despite the same normalized 0 1 range used to report results for both types of cameras Canon APS C The lens showcased quite an impressive center performance almost throughout the entire tested aperture range I say almost because at f 1 4 center performance is somewhat weaker but even then quality is not disastrous Border performance is a different story here and the lens struggled at the widest aperture levels From f 1 4 through f 2 border quality is pretty dismal However once stopped down to f 2 8 border performance improves and reaches pretty solid levels remaining on a consistent level throughout the rest of the aperture At its peak around f 5 6 f 8 the lens is capable of producing outstanding 16in and decent 19in prints Conclusion The lens is clearly capable of producing pretty decent results but not at its widest supported aperture level Still the overall results can be considered decent for such an ultra wide ultra fast prime lens MTF50 Line Width Inch on the Print 24mm Normalized raw MTF50 24mm Chromatic aberration

  • Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens Review
    on a target Hunting was common in both low light as well as normal lightning conditions The focusing ring is detached from the AF operation the ring does not rotate during auto focusing so you can use it to fine tune the focusing after the AF locks on the target As mentioned earlier the lens supports manual focusing but the lens is not really designed with manual focusing in mind the focusing ring moves from the closeup to the infinity in about 90 degrees making precise manual focusing rather hard ISO 400 1 160 f 1 8 28mm Canon 5D When shot with wide open aperture the lens produced out of focus highlights that were mostly uniformly lit but often carried harshly defined edges The effect is not too distracting but not pleasant either Contrast transitions in the background and foreground OOF areas were somewhere in the middle not too harsh but not too smooth either There was no sign of double edging around back fore ground objects Vignetting f 1 8 full frame vs 1 6x crop 135mm Canon EF 28mm f 1 8 USM showcased noticeable vignetting at f 1 8 when used on a full frame camera Vignetting continued to persist at f 2 8 slowly disappearing by f 4 f 5 6 On an APS C body the lens produced practically no visible vignetting throughout the tested aperture range The lens produced noticeable color fringing that was visible pretty much throughout the aperture range on both APS C as well as FF cameras check the image crop below as well as purple highlights in the urban area shot in the image gallery Axial CA halation was pretty insignificant at f 1 8 disappearing by f 2 8 notice white halos around flowers in the blooming tree shot in the image gallery Generally speaking the lens did not handle color well images at wider apertures were washed out lacking good contrast separation across the entire frame The lens also fell prone to flare at wide apertures and showed noticeable degree of distortion ISO 100 1 4000 f 2 8 135mm 100 crop Title Title Title Title Title Title Title Title Title View the embedded image gallery online at http slrlensreview com web reviews canon lenses canon wide angle 86 canon ef 28mm f18 usm lens review sigProGalleriac9656a6d57 Lab Tests Please note that MTF50 results for APS C and Full Frame cameras are not cross comparable despite the same normalized 0 1 range used to report results for both types of cameras Canon APS C Canon EF 28mm f 1 8 USM showcased somewhat of a mixed performance on an APS C camera Center performance was quite decent in general at f 1 8 image quality in the center is average but more or less acceptable and from f 2 8 on quality is quite good Regretfully border image quality is quite unimpressive especially at wider apertures from f 1 8 through f 2 8 quality around borders

    camera with 1 6x crop factor the field of view of the lens will be equivalent to that of a 160mm lens on a full frame body The factory box includes Canon EF 100mm f 2 USM lens front and rear caps manual and registration card The lens is compatible with optional LP1014 soft case and ET 65III lens hood also optional Summary Lens Composition 8 elements in 6 groups Angular Field 24 degrees Minimum Focus 90cm 3ft Focusing Action AF MF USM f stop Scale f 2 f 22 camera controlled Filter Size 58mm Lens Hood ET 65III optional Weight 460g 1lb Dimensions 75x73mm 3x2 9 Lens Case LP1014 optional Field Tests Canon EF 100mm f 2 USM produced outstanding results in the field with excellent overall image sharpness across the frame and throughout the aperture range on both FF and APS C cameras Performance was on the level of a best L lens which by itself came as a major surprise considering that this is one of the least expensive medium telephoto primes in Canon s modern lineup As a matter of fact I kept comparing EF 100mm f 2 to EF 135mm f 2L which I tested a few weeks ago and with the exception of the build quality overall performance comparison stacked up quite favorably AF system is pretty fast quiet and more importantly quite accurate although the motor would hunt occasionally mostly at close focusing distances Since the lens is pretty light and compact shooting from hand did not pose much of a problem Vignetting f 2 full frame vs 1 6x crop Vignetting on a full frame body was pretty minimal at f 2 and non existent once stopped down to f 2 8 and beyond The lens shows no signs of vignetting on an APS C type camera straight from f 2 Color fringing is very minimal occasionally popping up around corners Images show excellent contrast throughout the frame with pretty accurate overall color balance The lens did not exhibit any noticeable barrel distortion which does not come as a surprise in a medium telephoto lens and held up nicely against flare even at its widest aperture level ISO 100 1 1600 f 2 100mm Canon EF 100mm f 2 USM image gallery Lab Tests Please note that MTF50 results for APS C and Full Frame cameras are not cross comparable despite the same normalized 0 1 range used to report results for both types of cameras Canon APS C Canon EF 100mm f 2 USM produced outstanding performance on an APS C type body Image center was outstanding straight from f 2 and remained on a consistently high level through the rest of tested aperture range Border quality closely followed center performance with excellent results throughout the aperture range well borders got a tidbit softer by f 11 Overall results are very balanced across the frame which is a very desirable characteristic in any lens At its peak from f 2 8
