  • Pentax smc DA 70mm F2.4 Limited Lens Review
4 Limited Lens Review Field Tests and Sample Images Lab Tests with APS C and FF cameras Recommendation and User Reviews Tweet Page 1 of 4 Introduction Pentax smc DA 70mm f 2 4 Limited is yet another Limited pencake lens Pentax designed for the exclusive use with its APS C type SLR bodies The lens was introduced back in 2006 and went into mass production around the end of that year the lens currently retails for US 500 and at this price level is clearly oriented towards prosumer and professional users rather then beginners The optical construction of the lens consists of 6 elements in 5 groups Like all DA Limited lenses the smc DA 70mm f 2 4 sports a lightweight aluminium barrel designed to withstand quite a bit of abuse The lens is very light and compact weighing only 130g 4 6oz and measuring 63x 26mm 2 5 x 1in this is easily one of the smallest medium telephoto lenses currently available on the market The lens supports both auto as well as manual focusing Since there is no motor in the lens itself the auto focus is possible only on cameras that have a focusing drive pin The pin locks into a slot on the base of lens mount and rotates the elements back andforth until the camera catches the focus The manual focusing is possible at any time without the need to switch the lens from auto to manual focusing there s even no A M swtich on the lens This is possible because of the QUick Shift Focusing System which is a big name for full time manual focus override The smc DA 70mm f 2 4 Limited sports a fully electronic aperture and all settings are controlled directly from the camera This is

  • Pentax smc DA* 55mm f/1.4 SDM Lens Review
Field Tests and Sample Images Lab Tests with APS C and FF cameras Recommendation and User Reviews Tweet Page 1 of 4 Introduction Pentax smc DA 55mm f 1 4 SDM is one of the latest addition to the company s growing portfolio of lenses specifically designed for digital SLR cameras This is also one of the first KAF3 mount lenses in the company s potfolio As a reminder KAF3 mount lenses do not have screw slot on the base of the lens mount and hence can only be used in AF mode only on cameras that have electronic focusing control The lens was first announced at PMA2008 and made it into production runs by the end of the same year The lens currently retails for US 700 and at this price level is obviously targeted towards prosumers and professionals rather then the masses The optical construction of the lens consists of 9 elements in 8 groups The build quality of the lens is decent but not particularly spectacular the barrel is plastic and leaves impression of a cheapo finish although the lens is actually dust and weather resistant The lens incorporates a supersonic drive motor for autofocsing although you can still manual focus the lens using the dedicated focusing ring Like most modern Pentax lenses smc DA 55mm f 1 4 SDM incorporates Quick Shift Focusing System which allows you to fine tune your focus manually after the AF system acquires the target For a fast standard prime smc DA 55mm f 1 4 SDM is about average in size and weigh measuring 70 5 x 66mm 2 8 x 2 6in and weighing 375g 13 2oz The minimum aperture level is f 22 again the aperture settings are controlled electronically from the camera and there is no dedicated

  • Pentax smc FA 43mm f/1.9 Limited Lens Review
02 August 2009 Hits 17971 Article Index Pentax smc FA 43mm f 1 9 Limited Lens Review Field Tests and Sample Images Lab Tests on APS C and FF cameras Recommendation and User Reviews Tweet Page 1 of 4 Introduction Pentax smc FA 43mm f 1 9 Limited is one of the only four FA lenses from the company s film era that are still being manufactured and sold nowadays The lens was the first one to bear Limited designation and despite its rather high price tag US 500 remained quite popular among users But but the general sense in the Pentax community is that with the introduction of Pentax smc DA 40mm f 2 8 Limited and switch towards SDM type lenses the days of the smc FA 43mm f 1 9 are numbered The optical construction of the lens consists of 6 elements in 7 groups Like all pancake lenses the smc FA 43mm f 1 9 Limited is quite small and light measuring 63 x 27mm 2 5 x 1 1in and weighing only 156g 5 5oz The build quality of the lens is excellent with metal barrel and aperture focusing rings That s right like all FA lenses the smc FA 43mm f 1 9 has a dedicated aperture ring which allows you to stop down the lens manually although the lens also supports fully automatic through the camera diaphragm control assuming you lock the aperture ring into the A position The focusing ring rotates from f 1 9 through f 22 in one full f stop increments The lens supports both manual as well as automatic focusing although since there is no dedicated AF motor in the lens itself the auto focusing is done using camera s drive pin that locks into a dedicated slot

  • Pentax smc DA 21mm f/3.2 AL Limited Lens Review
Tests with APS C and FF cameras Recommendation and User Reviews Tweet Page 1 of 4 Introduction Pentax smc DA 21mm f 3 2 AL Limited is one of a series of Pentax pancake lenses the company introduced for its digital SLR cameras to fill in the gap that was left after the previous generation of K and M series lenses was discontinued The lens was first announced at PMA2006 and is currently still in production as of July 2009 The lens retails at US 450 and at this price is within budgets of amateurs and pros alike The optical construction of the lens consists of 8 elements in 5 groups it is quite surprising that Pentax managed to cram so many elements into such a tiny lens smc DA 21mm f 3 2 Limited measures only63 x 25mm 2 5 x 1in And with its weight of only 140g the lens really pushes the definition of light and compact The build quality of the lens is quite good with aluminium barrel and focusing ring Like all other DA and DA Limited lenses the smc DA 21mm f 3 2 AL was designed specifically for Pentax APS C type digital cameras the lens has a fully electronic aperture control so there is no dedicated aperture ring and while it might be possible to mount the lens on older film Pentax bodies or another non Pentax camera using an adapter it would be impossible to use the lens in any but fully open aperture mode The lens supports auto focusing but there is no dedicated motor to rotate the lens elements so the auto focusing is enabled through an AF pin that extends from the camera body and locks into a slot on the bottom of the lens Manual focusing is

camera the lens has field of view of 50mm which turns out to be an equivalent of 50mm field of view on a traditional 35mm camera including FF digital cameras On an APS C body the field of view resembles that of a 80mm lens on full frame body Summary Lens Composition 6 elements in 5 groups Angular Field 50 degrees 35mm EFL 50mm Minimum Focus 60cm 1 96ft Focusing Action MF f stop Scale f 2 8 f 22 manual Filter Size 58mm Lens Hood N A Weight 240g 8 46oz Dimensions 38x65mm 1 49x2 55 Lens Case N A Field Testing Pentax 645 smc A 75mm f 2 8 showed pretty good overall performance in the field Images remained sharp on both APS C as well as FF cameras with no major visible degradation in quality across the aperture range Vignetting f 2 8 full frame vs 1 6x crop 75mm The lens showed negligible amount of vignetting on a full frame body at f 2 8 and practically no vignetting once stopped down to f 4 or so Vignetting on an APS C body was basically non existent across the testes aperture range All this is not very surprising considering the fact that sensors of traditional 35mm digital SLRs do not fully cover imaging circles of medium format lenses The lens did not exhibit major color fringing on either APS C or FF body although it fell prone to very mild axial CA at f 2 8 notice haloes around flowers in a tree shot below Color reproduction was pretty decent with images carrying enough contrast across the aperture range Flare was mostly under control as was barrel distortion ISO 100 1 4000 f 2 8 75mm 100 crop Title Title Title Title Title View the embedded image gallery online at http slrlensreview com web reviews pentax pentax standard 645 483 pentax 645 smc 75mm f28 lens review sigProGalleriabfbe6d696e Lab Testing Please note that MTF50 results for APS C and Full Frame cameras are not cross comparable despite the same normalized 0 1 range used to report results for both types of cameras Pentax 645 At this time I do not have plans to start testing any medium format system Canon APS C Pentax 645 smc A 75mm f 2 8 produced pretty solid results on an APS C body Center image quality is already pretty decent at f 2 8 and only improves with stopped down aperture In the f 4 f 11 range center resolution is certainly as good as it gets Border performance is a little bit lagging at f 2 8 an emphasis here is on a little bit and by f 4 border image resolution pretty much catches up with the center Overall the lens shows pretty balanced results across the aperture range but the peak is reached in the f 4 f 8 range Here the lens is capable of delivering excellent 19in and decent 24in prints Conclusion Overall results can

the ground under your feet to distant clouds in the frame The AF system is pretty fast and silent however it is not extremely accurate at closer ranges and has a tendency to hunt especially in low light conditions For longer distances this issue becomes less of a problem since the depth of field of the lens would likely mask small focusing errors you might even decide to manual focus the lens to speed up the operation and avoid unnecessary auto refocusing Overall performance in the field was pretty decent The lens produced pretty sharp images in the f 8 f 11 range on both APS C as well as FF cameras but seemed to struggle at wider apertures with visibly softer borders Vignetting f 2 8 full frame vs 1 6x crop 200mm The lens showed moderate level of vignetting on a full frame camera with wide open aperture What is surprising is that the amount of vignetting here is not extreme as one might have expected from such a wide lens As you stop down the lens vignetting is reduced and by f 5 6 is all but gone On an APS C camera with its smaller sensor the lens naturally shows slightly better performance vignetting is still present at f 2 8 but is pretty minimal by f 4 Color reproduction was more or less accurate however images carried rather low level of contrast at wider apertures Images at f 2 8 seemed rather washed out with color levels constantly being skewed towards highlights Stopping down the lens improved contrast and by f 5 6 or so the lens produced pretty balanced images Color fringing was visible predominantly around borders and at wider apertures which is typical of majority of wide angle lenses But on a positive side axial CA halation was not visible throughout Like most ultra wide angle lenses Sigma 14mm f 2 8 EX DG ASPH HSM is quite prone to flare as well as to distortion which was visible in on both APS C as well as FF cameras ISO 100 1 1250 f 2 8 14mm 100 crop Title Title Title Title Title Title Title View the embedded image gallery online at http slrlensreview com web reviews sigma sigma wide angle 148 sigma 14mm f28 ex asph hsm lens review sigProGalleria42ba029e80 Lab Tests Please note that MTF50 results for APS C and Full Frame cameras are not cross comparable despite the same normalized 0 1 range used to report results for both types of cameras Canon APS C Sigma 14mm f 2 8 EX DG ASPH HSM showed pretty good overall performance on an APS C body Center image resolution was decent with wide open aperture improving quite nicely with stopped down aperture In the f 4 f 11 range center performance is quite respectable Unfortunately border quality was lagging center especially at f 2 8 where quality quite mediocre Fortunately quality improved at f 4 and then improved further at f
