  • Nikon AF-S Zoom Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED Lens Review
    system is pretty fast and accurate ISO 400 1 40 f 2 8 24mm Nikon D3 Considering that the lens has a simply enormous depth of field at the wide end of the zoom range it is doubtful you will use this lens for any portrait work Maybe at the 24mm end Maybe But basically ultra wide angle lenses do not typically produce creamy eye pleasing out of focus areas see lens design properties section if you re wondering why and AF S Zoom Nikkor 14 24mm f 2 8G ED is not an exception The shot above as well as shots of tulips and a lamp in the sample image gallery show what you can expect from this lens at 24mm wide open aperture close to the minimum focusing distance The OOF highlights are pretty round and uniformly lit but sometimes show harsh edging Fore back ground transitions are pretty neutral but this is actually quite OK for a wide angle and there does not seem to be any double eding around OOF objects Nikon claims a drastic improvement in flare control with lenses that carry its new Nano Crystal Coating lenses with this new coating are marked with an upper case letter N on the body Most lenses will flare in one condition or another and this Nikon lens is not an exception to the rule despite the whole hoopla about the new coating The two shots below showcase such a situation The images were captured with the sun positioned very close to the picture frame sun rays were grazing the front element of the lens at 40 degrees in the shot at 14mm and 60 degrees in the shot at 24mm Both images showcase ghosting and glare but in a relatively mild manner and that s actually the best news ISO 200 1 2500 f 2 8 14mm Nikon D3 ISO 200 1 2500 f 2 8 24mm Nikon D3 The bigeest surprise with the lens however was its resolving capabilities Images remained sharp throughout the aperture range both in the center as well as around borders Yes that s right there is no visible image quality degradation across the entire frame even at 14mm Zoom in zoom out change apertures do whatever the lens delivers very consistent results that should pass the eye of the toughest critic out there As expected from a super wide zoom light falloff is quite noticeable on a full frame body at the widest end of the zoom range Vignetting goes down with stopped down apertures and becomes quite negligible after f 4 Also as you zoom towards the 24mm end vignetting levels are reduced as well Cameras with APS C sized sensors generally deal with light falloff somewhat better simply because of the smaller coverage the APS C sensors provide This is also the case with AF S Zoom Nikkor 14 24mm f 2 8G ED and generally speaking vignetting is certainly lower on an APS C camera but is

    give you an idea of the extreme perspective the lens delivers The lens showcased pretty good overall performance in the field Images were sharp across the frame pretty much throughout the tested aperture range on both APS C as well as full frame cameras Well technically speaking the lens did actually show slightly softer results around extreme corners which can be mostly attributed to the barrel distortion This can be easily observed in closeup photography where objects in the near plane tend to get distorted more noticeably and less so at the infinity in the general landscape type shots for which the lens obviously was designed in the first place So all in all results are quite good Vignetting f 2 8 full frame vs 1 6x crop 14mm As expected from such a wide lens Canon EF 14mm f 2 8L II USM shows quite a noticeable vignetting at f 2 8 on a full frame body Vignetting continues to persist through f 5 6 albeit at lower levels Beyond that color falloff is basically non existent And on an APS C camera vignetting is already quite minimal at f 2 8 and practically invisible at f 4 and beyond Like most wide angle primes Canon EF 14mm f 2 8L II USM also fell prone to some flare in certain harsh lightning conditions The shots below demonstrate a situation when a strong direct light source positioned close to the picture frame The sun in the samples was hitting the lens at 45 degrees from the right hand corner You can notice that the flare has noticeably reduced image contrast in the right hand corner which is something to be expected with pretty much any lens But in addition to the lower contrast the lens also shows pretty noticeable ghosting both wide open as well as at lower aperture settings Top ISO 100 1 10000 f 2 8 Bottom ISO 100 1 125 f 8 Canon 5D Aside from vignetting and flare color handling was quite decent Colors were sufficiently saturated and the palette remained quite neutral Images carried good amount of contrast throughout the tested aperture range however the lens did show minor degree of color fringing You can observe sagittal aberration around the door panes in the image crop below And as mentioned above like most wide angles Canon EF 14mm f 2 8L II USM exhibited noticeable barrel distortion although the amount of distortion seemed somewhat lower then with comparable 14mm lenses from Nikon or Sigma ISO 100 1 1000 f 2 8 14mm 100 crop Title Title Title Title Title Title Title View the embedded image gallery online at http slrlensreview com web reviews canon lenses canon wide angle 403 canon ef 14mm f28l ii usm lens review tmpl component print 1 page sigProGalleriad6e008c175 Lab Tests Please note that MTF50 results for APS C and Full Frame cameras as well as cameras from different manufacturers are not cross comparable despite the same normalized 0 1

    Focusing Action AF MF USM f stop Scale f 2 8 f 22 camera controlled Filter Size 72mm Lens Hood EW 75II optional Weight 405g 14 3oz Dimensions 77 5x70 6mm 3 1x2 8 Lens Case LP1214 optional Field Tests This is one lens that is rather hard to characterize in a few sentences because of a somewhat uneven overall performance Image quality was reasonably good under some circumstances Note here the word some On APS C type camera images were visibly soft at f 2 8 around borders and on a full frame body they were even softer Quality did improve somewhat with stopped down aperture but there s no magic here most lenses are sharper when stopped down and Canon EF 20mm f 2 8 USM is not really an exception here Color rendition was more or less accurate but images lacked contrast Vignetting f 2 8 full frame vs 1 6x crop Vignetting was somewhat on a higher end at f 2 8 with a full frame camera and less so with an APS C one but gradually got better and was pretty minimal at f 4 and beyond The lens also showed visible barrel distortion which while expected from such a wide angle lens is still disappointing The lens was also prone to flare at the widest aperture setting AF was pretty accurate and fast throughout the tested aperture settings Canon EF 20mm f 2 8 USM image gallery Lab Tests Please note that MTF50 results for APS C and Full Frame cameras are not cross comparable despite the same normalized 0 1 range used to report results for both types of cameras Canon APS C Canon EF 20mm f 2 8 USM showed somewhat mixed results in the lab Center performance was outstanding from f 2 8 throughout the tested aperture range peaking at f 5 6 Unfortunately border performance is rather disappointing it s not the worst I have seen but certainly is not inspiring either for a fixed focal lens that is At its best the lens would give you outstanding 11in and decent 16in and 19in prints which is a decent performance except that we expect more from a prime lens these days Conclusion Combination of excellent center and average border performance makes it hard to render a definitive decision The lens should probably remain on your maybe list until you find an alternative that clearly outperforms Canon EF 20mm f 2 8 USM MTF50 Line Width Inch on the Print 20mm Normalized raw MTF50 20mm Chromatic aberration was well under control in the center less then 0 5px throughout the tested aperture range but was more pronounced around borders where it varied from 1 7px to 1px For a prime lens this might seem a bit on a higher end until we recall that we re dealing with am ultra wide angle lens here Image borders 20mm 100 crop f 2 8 vs f 8 Canon FF The lens performance around

  • Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens Review

    Weight 550g 19 4oz Dimensions 83 5x77 4mm 3 3x3 1 Lens Case LP1214 included Field Tests Canon EF 24mm f 1 4L USM produced solid results in the field The lens was tack sharp in the center on both APS C and FF cameras across entire tested aperture range Borders were noticeably softer at wide aperture levels f 1 4 especially which should not come as a surprise since we re dealing with a super fast ultra wide lens here AF system was reasonably fast and accurate As is common with most Canon lenses reproduced colors were somewhat on a warmer side Vignetting f 1 4 full frame vs 1 6x crop The lens shows noticeable vignetting on a full frame camera at the widest aperture level which is reduced by f 2 and becomes pretty much non existent once stopped down to f 2 8 The lens does not exhibit any noticeable vignetting straight from f 1 4 Unfortunately the lens produced color fringing pretty much across the frame and fell prone to flare at f 1 4 amounts of both color fringing as well as flare are reduced with stopped down apertures ISO 100 1 4000 f 1 4 24mm 100 crop Canon EF 24mm f 1 4L USM image gallery Lab Tests Please note that MTF50 results for APS C and Full Frame cameras are not cross comparable despite the same normalized 0 1 range used to report results for both types of cameras Canon APS C The lens showcased quite an impressive center performance almost throughout the entire tested aperture range I say almost because at f 1 4 center performance is somewhat weaker but even then quality is not disastrous Border performance is a different story here and the lens struggled at the widest aperture levels From f 1 4 through f 2 border quality is pretty dismal However once stopped down to f 2 8 border performance improves and reaches pretty solid levels remaining on a consistent level throughout the rest of the aperture At its peak around f 5 6 f 8 the lens is capable of producing outstanding 16in and decent 19in prints Conclusion The lens is clearly capable of producing pretty decent results but not at its widest supported aperture level Still the overall results can be considered decent for such an ultra wide ultra fast prime lens MTF50 Line Width Inch on the Print 24mm Normalized raw MTF50 24mm Chromatic aberration was rather on a high level with this lens on an APS C camera CA averages 0 9px in the center and 1 6px around borders at f 1 4 Once stopped down CA is reduced significantly in the center but still remains pretty high around borders where it averages 1 1px throughout the rest of the aperture range Image borders 24mm 100 crop f 1 4 vs f 8 Canon FF Canon EF 24mm f 1 4L USM continued to show quite impressive performance in the center
