  • Solving Information Overload With Good Design: Why Dashboards Will Be The Next Big Thing For Feeds - Steffan Antonas
I know I m not saying anything innovative here so why haven t companies like FriendFeed and NewsGator innovated with the design of their layout to improve readability It s all so linear Linear design is fine and even elegant until you start pulling a lot of different types of content into one stream FriendFeed in particular has gotten so useless to me that I don t even bother with it anymore Tweets photos bookmarks comments it s all there in one big no context pile that you have to sort through I quit trying a while ago because it s just too overwhelming I know I m not alone in this Why doesn t every profile have a dashboard of all their stuff sparated out for readability It s all coming in separately so why lump it all together ina long time line and make it less useful In an asychronous world where people are creating lots of different kinds of content do I really care that a tweet about lunch came right after a bookmark of a stock report Time doesn t add enough context to make it meaningful especially when you add more and more users to a stream In short the problem isn t that there s too much data it s that the current design and organization of the information presented by popular aggregation services lends itself to clutter FriendFeed in particular should take note of iGoogle s new widgetized dashboard and show us something fresh new and organized Just aggregating a ton of services isn t enough You have to help your users orgnize and make sense of it all Services that do that well are going to win in the long term Published September 19 2008 Author Steffan Antonas Category Cyberculture Social Media Tags Google Predictions Social Media Technology Comments 14 Comments Published by Steffan Antonas To the readers of this blog This post like all the others should be thought of as the start of a conversation so please share your ideas by joining in the discussion If you do please adhere to the following commenting rules 1 Be Cool no flaming and no spamming All inappropriate comments will be deleted 2 If you must curse please do so with style and taste 3 Put your URL in the website field and not in the comment box Finally If you liked this article please consider sharing it on del icio us StumbleUpon or Digg I d appreciate it Post navigation Previous Post The Win Win Of Good Linking Etiquette Next Post Leaked Video Of The Very First Android Device For Verizon 14 Comments Tony September 19 2008 at 2 00 pm Steffan Nice use of iGoogle I think that display though is only part of the problem with regards to Information Overload The biggest challenge is relevancy I really like David Apgar s theory on relevancy He takes a hypothesis based view of the world where one lays out certain strategic beliefs

  • microblogging Archives - Steffan Antonas
allow you to get to know someone more intimately than a regular blog Closeness and familiarity in 140 characters or less You might ask yourself What could I possibly say in a series of text messages that would be meaningful enough for acquaintances to bother to keep reading People everywhere are discovering that the answer is actually a lot A fundamental fact about microblogging platforms like Twitter is that the mobile devices we use and the speed we can post changes not only how we blog but what we blog Stuff that I d never blog about makes it to Twitter and I m sure that s true for most Twitter users Even capping out at 140 characters per post a stream of small posts about where you are where you re going what you re doing eating enjoying reading watching feeling in near real time is actually far more personal and meaningful than reading a more lengthy article written by someone on the realities of say microblogging The recent rise and success of microblogging platforms like Twitter has shown us that people crave the personal even in short snippets Places you go meals you enjoy small comments and opinions
