  • Someone Set Gen Con Up The Bomb | StupidRanger.com
1 3 of what used to be the sales floor two years ago I saw less special guests brought by the convention itself and more from individual companies Because you know Hayden Panettiere hawking a CCG about horses is what I drive to Indy for Up until a couple years ago this really bothered me Used to be I came to Gen Con so I could basically do aggravated damage to my visa account My first con was in 1997 and I beheld stuff with my own eyes that I had only seen in Dragon magazine before when I was a kid The only place that sold D D books around me was Waldenbooks and they didn t have much And I didn t have any money to buy anything back then so this was like retail Christmas The Chessex booth alone damn near killed me Now it s different And I wonder whether it s the con or just times changing These days you can get pretty much anything your little heart desires on the Internet And they ve gotten rid of most of the really fun shops that sell stuff you can t find other places Apparently you can find bootleg copies of old cartoons on the Internet Who knew Why I ll Still Be Going For me though there was a silver lining for all of this Once the main attractions started to get worse for me and I started wondering if this yearly trek was worth it I decided to go one last time and actually try some events That got me into Nascrag and True Dungeon I could care less at this point if they can get big name actors to show up I could care less if the sales floor is giant and tempting It s close enough for me to get to easily and it draws enough people that I can still have a lot of fun with new friends And as long as that s still there I ll be on the road every August We are Gen Con All of us And as long as we keep going somewhere each year to have fun none of this matters We re looking forward to this year in particular because this website has revealed to us a lot of new friends and readers we d like to meet I envision unparalleled levels of Completely Awesome Gen Con is one of my favorite events of the entire year and I really wish the folks at Gen Con well I hope they can weather all of this and keep on producing the event we ve all come to know and love I Love My Wife Dearly But She Is Really Strange Sometimes I do have to mention though that when I told my wife Efreak who is a professional graphic designer about the whole bankruptcy thing she got this evil gleam in her eye and said does this mean you ll be going to Dragon

from each Introducing Flamespark Mage After cherry picking and adjusting the elements from the previous two ice y paragon paths I developed the Flamespark Mage paragon path I reviewed it with Dante prior to calling it complete and we did make a few minor adjustments In the end I have exactly the paragon path that I want fiery and balanced with interesting spells to look forward to learning from 4e player tips rpgbloggers Stupid Ranger 3 Responses leave one adamjford permalink July 5 2010 Is the Aftereffect of the encounter power adapted from the one of the originating paragon paths or is that new It seems odd since only daily powers usually have save ends effects Stupid Ranger permalink July 5 2010 The aftereffect is adapted from the Winter s Kiss power from the Bralani Wintersoul paragon path The original aftereffect was the target takes 5 cold damage and is slowed until the end of your next turn I opted to drop the slowed since that didn t seem to fit with fire element and instead changed the damage to ongoing save ends There is another Wizard encounter power Fire Shroud that has ongoing 5 fire save ends so I felt that it wasn t too much of a stretch for my Pillar of Flame given that I dropped the slowed TheTransient permalink July 8 2010 The Wintersoul paragon path was a good choice It seems rather adaptable plus it gives you a more role play ability as it taps more into the essence of the element That is one thing I like about 4e The different powers and paths help give a PC more character I actually used that Paragon path when developing an Epic level Eladrin Wizard for a short campaign a friend was running Basically we were

find our caravan attacked We few adventurers survive and strive to escape to civilization It s not an easy life traveling the desert especially with random attacks threatening our lives But we have to keep moving or the victory our enemies fail to achieve will be accomplished by the harsh environment My Thoughts So Far I opted for the sorcerer Barcan I wanted to play a class with which I had some familiarity but there were still several elements I didn t know It s tough to walk into a character not knowing anything about them but I thought my experience with my wizard would be enough to help me figure my way through the unfamiliar powers My biggest problem was getting used to the abbreviated character sheet I miss having all the details especially the skills With all the miscellaneous skill checks it would have been nice to have all the skills and modifiers listed instead of just the trained skills The spells are fairly well defined but I miss little things like the keywords For me it s more about what I don t see on my little character card though the omissions are minor in nature Dark Sun is a unique experience for me I m having fun so far but I m not sure how much I would enjoy the difficulties of surviving the environment in a long term campaign So I m reserving judgment until I ve play a bit more from 4e dndenc rpgbloggers Stupid Ranger 2 Responses leave one Ameron permalink July 5 2010 I too find the compressed character sheets terrible and difficult to use especially if you re new to 4e D D I created D D Encounters Dark Sun Character Skill Cards to remind my players that they can use

  • Review: Player’s Strategy Guide | StupidRanger.com
or any roleplaying experience the guide is a great reference for getting your feet wet There is a lot of great advice on roleplaying topics from deciding what character to play to getting into character to deciding when to heal What I like about this from the new player perspective is that things are explained simply without a lot of the jargon that can be a little intimidating to new players For Experienced Players The guide may feel as if it s geared toward new players but there are still valuable tips for experienced players who may be switching to 4E Because 4E has so many different elements from previous editions some of the character development techniques can be useful for those who are switching editions What I really like from the experienced player perspective are the character quizzes There are quizzes to help you pin point which class and which race you might like to play This would have been immensely helpful for our paladin who switched classes after 10 levels because the warlord just wasn t suiting her style of play from 4e reviews rpgbloggers Stupid Ranger No comments yet Click here to cancel reply Leave a Reply

types advanced to engage him I started peppering him with radiant damage and our gnome psion inadvertently found some other enemies hanging out waiting to be invited to the party It wasn t easy but early into battle things seemed to be going pretty well for us see picture Xeres took a lot of focused fire for while see picture But as we all know battle can turn very quickly Xeres teleported away to a less threatened vantage forcing the fighters to chase him see picture Our resources were running out our resolve was close to failing but we managed to pull ourselves together and in the end we won though not without a few surprises Out of Character Thoughts I had a great time with Encounters It was a challenge that first night to walk into a room full of complete strangers but I m glad I did I made new friends and I m looking forward to exploring Dark Sun not with strangers but with friends The concept of one battle per session worked really well We walked in every week knowing what was expected of us there were enough surprises that we never knew exactly what to expect but we knew there would be combat There was never a moment of indecision because we knew where to go next One of biggest problems was with difficult gamer personalities We had two teenagers that played most every session and they talked more often than they planned Combat moved slowly with them and it was very frustrating for the rest of us We also had a super gamer who showed up for a couple of sessions He wanted to role play his way through the encounters which didn t work well for the group as a whole as he
