  • Behind the Screen: Writing episodic content… | StupidRanger.com
the tavern crawling a dungeon etc Create the Good Stuff From this hook you can then shunt off into whatever side quest or event that you want to have happen In our last campaign we took these opportunities to throw puzzles at our players give them money or treasure or further the grand storyline Gracefully return them to normalcy When planning episodic content try to have each one resolve in a way that it can be gracefully re incorporated into whatever was going on before the episode Unless you intend to do so try not to strand your players in a location that they don t want to be in There are many benefits to this method I ve found that the flexibility and richness that episodic content can bring is very refreshing to both my players and to me as DM So long as I can craft a feasible generic hook to get them headed in a new direction I can take my players somewhere that I want them to go for awhile There is an art to creating hooks that aren t obvious but I ve found that a little practice confidence and conviction won t make these episodes appear tacked on I ve had much success with this approach and have Eric to thank I hope everyone will give this a try and see how it works from behind the screen Dante gm tips 4 Responses leave one Phil permalink September 6 2007 Good Stuff I ll go even a bit farther and say that when your group has frequent missing players as mine does Damn you Real Life an episodic campaign where sessions start and end within one evening make it easier to deal with contiunity issues raised by players not showing up Dr Rotwang permalink

I can t say much bad about the Spellstorm Mage idea They re fun Brad permalink June 11 2009 I think I found what you are looking for The Rimetongue Caller paragon path Arcane Power would work if you swap out everything cold for fire damage Change up the name and I think it will work The class does work best if you take a few summoning spells also in Arcane Power but I think it would work for you GeekBob permalink June 11 2009 I ve never modified any paragon paths before or created any for that matter We ve not been playing 4e for very long so the matter has yet to come up But it s something interesting to look at Especially modifying the Spellstorm Mage to a flame based I may take a crack at it to see what sort of things can be done Looking at it more than just alteration of Lightning Fire may be needed Sounds like fun GeekBob permalink June 11 2009 With a desire to try my hand at understanding 4e mechanics more as well as seeing what it would be like to modify a paragon path And to just be helpful I ve altered the Spellstorm PP as a flame based one with slightly different powers I posted it Will be soon on my blog for comments Brad I wish I d remembered to bring that one in with me to work I may have to look at it to modifiy what I have Saragon permalink June 11 2009 To flesh out the Heir of Siberys PP a bit The 11th level action point ability was simply that the PC started the day with two action points instead of one after an extended rest The 3 5 Heir of Siberys PrC gave extra action points as well so this was easy The second 11th level ability was also pretty easy As the Siberys mark began to form the PC simply received the ability of the Greater dragonmark of their lineage and as dragonmark abilities are cumulative in my homebrew rules they received the Least and Lesser abilities as well by virtue of having the Greater ability Naturally they also couldn t take any other dragonmark feat from this point forward As a point of pride I m very pleased with how my dragonmark feats turned out Free ritual as a once per day thing and a small bonus to an appropriate skill The 16th level ability was pretty weak to make up for the front loaded 11th level power Adjacent allies and yourself get a 1 bonus to saving throws and you gain a 2 bonus to Diplomacy and Intimidate a Siberys mark has certain powerful social connotations I m proud of the powers I came up with as well The 11th level encounter power Wrath of Siberys is a blast 5 attack that does 2d10 damage and dazes foes until the end of your next turn The 12th level

  • The Morality Of Adventuring | StupidRanger.com
Consequences I am not of course worried that America s youth is going to turn to torture and genocide At least not because of WoW American Idol maybe My interest in the topic is purely for roleplaying purposes on both sides of the table As a player I ve got to figure out what to do with myself when presented with that situation In a game like WoW the consequences good or bad frequently take the form of Reputation I must say I m happy they sometimes make your actions affect one faction positively and another negatively While it makes it hard to do everything in the game at least on one character I think it makes a vaguely realistic stab as to how your actions affect the opinions of those you interact with In D D of course how your character is perceived is up to the capricious whim of real people I see the most effect from this between players Especially if there s a Dudley Do Right in the group a character stealing a bunch of kids even with the best of intentions may find himself at swordpoint if another player disagrees DM s can set morally questionable situations up in advance to stir up some roleplaying but be aware of the above effect of doing so on your players You want to make things fun try not to make the powderkeg too large Look Both Ways Before You Justify The largest question in my mind about all this is how would my character deal with all this People do some crazy things under duress and under the influence of powerful leadership There s enough cognitive dissonance floating around in an entire world torn apart by war to rationalize goddamn near anything So while I as a pasty white Perl coder with a doughy middle and big screen TV think these things are questionably moral my shaman might feel differently Before you draw a line in the sand with your character about something take a few seconds to consider how they might see it And keep an eye on the paladin when you tell the party what you ve decided in case you need to duck from roleplaying rpgbloggers Vanir wow 5 Responses leave one jamused permalink February 19 2009 I only played WoW for about a month and never got beyond roughly 14th level iirc but every enemy mob that I ever ran into attempted to kill me on sight It didn t matter if I was on a quest to deal with them just picking flowers looking for some lost trinket or whatever To see me was to attempt to murder me And they d all fight to the death too They can t be bought bullied reasoned with or negotiated with So it seems to me that you don t need any more complicated morality than it s moral to defend yourself even with lethal force against a homicidal maniac or mad beast attempting
