account These are already on the inside and can operate freely if we haven t made the proper precautions to prevent it Application security vs Usability One thing that I thought about was the trade off between security and convenience Take for example many web applications where you can retrieve your password by answering some question like What was you mothers maiden name That s something that s not really hard for someone to find out if they really want to break into your account At the same time it s convenient to be able to easily and fast retrieve a lost password I guess what it all boils down to is to determine how important and confidential the data your protecting is One other thing that struck me was the parallel between how security and usability often are thought of in a development project Often it s not something that the customer explicitly require and therefor it s not accounted for in the project plan Instead it s something that comes up at the end of a project right before launch Oh it needs to be secure usable as well It s much harder to implement security at the end of a project and that s when it becomes really expensive Peter said that security doesn t have to be expensive If you plan for it right from the start it doesn t have to cost a lot In my experience it s the same thing with usability It s much cheaper to take it into consideration from the start than to do it at the end It also gives a much better result Download the presentation Peters presentation in pdf format Swedish Webworkers Webworkers is a network of people working with the web in one way or the

  • Back from vacation | In usability we trust
was hoping to do in Norway was to go on a whale safari It didn t look too good for a while since the weather was bad but fortunately the crew on the safari boat decided that the weather was good enough and we got out into the ocean searching for whales During six hours of pretty rough sea we got to see a Sperm whale for two minutes It was pretty cool to watch it blow water from it s nose and to watch it s big back rise and descend into the ocean After a while it got bored and waived goodbye with it s back fin and disappeared down in the blue Although I had hoped to see more whales I m glad that I at least saw one And I must say that they are truly impressive animals Anyway it feels good to be back home again and I look forward to write many articles and work on interesting projects this fall I hope you too have had a nice holiday and are ready to get back in business again Life Vacation Previous post I m going on vacation Next post Survey for makers of websites 3 Comments chris Jangelov August 9 2008 at 12 42 am Welcome back If you had went south instead you could have had less mosquitos and more pizza from real wood fire owens wine in soft warm summer evening breezes lots of sweet low hanging fruits to pick and nice octopuses to watch that never ever smash a boat to pieces Just a thought Reply Gabriel Svennerberg August 12 2008 at 8 23 am Thanks I guess I could But then I would ve missed the disturbing feeling of mosquitoes biting every inch of bare skin on my body while

file that it haven t displayed before This is preferably done by inserting a unique filename to the src attribute There s a couple a way of doing this but in this example it s done by adding the time in milliseconds ms as a querystring at the end of the filename function updateImage src if src indexOf 1 src src substr 0 src indexOf return src new Date getTime var img document getElementById myImage img src updateImage img src You could theoretically add a hash after the filename instead of a querystring but unfortunately that doesn t work in Internet Explorer So stick with the querystring and you will be fine Quick tips Javascript Previous post Free e book chapter on ASP NET MVC Framework Next post Announcing MapTooltip 3 Comments Jan Seidl April 1 2009 at 7 47 am Just watch out to bogus access data when using access log traffic analyzers like Awstats PS A typo cashed cached I know you wanna cash I want it too Reply Gabriel Svennerberg April 1 2009 at 9 31 am Thanks Jan and yeah I want lots of cash Reply ahmet May 15 2009 at 2 07 am so useful
