  • A O U - Large Pond Filter
in the settlement area The holes aren t necessary You could just leave the end of the pipe open if you want or not use a pipe at all just discharge directly into the settlement area I just thought a little dispersal doesn t hurt but I don t believe it s critical here If overall height is a problem you can skimp on the settlement area 6 or so if you have to and maybe an inch or so from the floc settlement area and the weir size each 3 Side view of Filter In this side view you can see how the grates will be supported by milk crates If the legs holding up the holey pipe are reasonably sturdy it can be use to support the grate as well The lip sticking out on the upper right is to deflect the water away from running down the front of the filter as it comes out of the weir Notice the cleats running all around the inside fastened to wall of the filter box They are to support the grate Now in Dusty s pond 15 000 gallons she s going to need about 35 cubic feet of lr more or less So we can size the filter Wide Long Lava Rock Total Cubic Feet Sides 4 8 12 32 30 4 8 15 40 33 4 6 18 36 36 4 4 24 32 42 4 16 18 96 42 What I ve done on the side measurement is allow 12 for a settlement chamber on the bottom the depth of the lr 3 for floc settlement and a 3 high weir the opening where the water comes out The formula works out to Width X Length divided by Depth until you get the desired cubic feet of lr In the examples above 1 32 square feet 4 X 8 multiplied by 1 foot 12 of lr 32 Cubic feet of lr 12 Settlement 12 lr 3 floc area 3 weir Sides of 30 2 32 square feet 4 X 8 multiplied by 1 25 foot 15 of lr 40 Cubic feet of lr 12 15 3 3 Sides of 33 3 24 square feet 4 X 6 multiplied by 1 5 foot 18 of lr 36 Cubic feet of lr 12 18 3 3 Sides of 36 In the last example 5 this is what I would need for my Ideal Pond which is going to be 40 000 gallons 5 24 square feet 4 X 6 multiplied by 1 5 foot 18 of lr 36 Cubic feet of lr 12 18 3 3 Sides of 36 Once you have the filter box made you can either line it with pond liner or better yet fiberglass it inside so it holds water I would suggest putting 2 X 6 s 18 on center running underneath the bottom to support the weight While you can make it out of plywood if I were doing it I would

  • A O U - Pond Report - September 1997
just behind the waterfall The bunch in BP just sort of withered away while the ones in the TP went absolutely nuts Initially in early June the leaves were yellowish instead of bright green They were growing okay but I just didn t think the color was too healthy so I added some fertilizer to the water Didn t seem to help much so I asked around the Net and a woman who was into gardening but not a ponder suggested a nitrogen deficiency I looked around and the highest concentration of nitrogen fertilizer 19 was Jobe s spikes for evergreens I threw a couple or three of them in and in mid July the parrot feathers went clean berserk The TP looks like it s wearing some sort of ecological afro They completely took over the TP have nearly covered the waterfall with runners 2 3 feet long hanging down the front of it and hanging over the sides From above it looks like a Brazilian rain forest Hyacinth Every other year I had hyacinth I swore I would never get it again as it always grew uncontrollably and I was constantly weeding it out Well this year I couldn t even get it to grow and the couple I had just turned brown and withered like they were burned up from lack of water this was before my nitrogen solution I have no idea why because it didn t matter where I had them in the TP BP or on top of the LRB No difference anywhere Next Year What I thought I d do next year is plant some lilies in bigger buckets to bring them closer to the surface 6 12 and put some plastic coated wire fencing around the top of the bucket to keep the koi out Fish I had a spell early this spring where I was losing 5 or 6 fish every week floaters and I couldn t figure out why I thought maybe it was because I was using shallow well water maybe contaminated so I changed water with city water chlorinated but no avail After 4 or 5 weeks the dieoff stopped I m still puzzled why Noticed a few fish with lesions that went away after I put in 20 lbs of SEA SALT I guess the iodine and other stuff cleared them up I did lose a lot of smaller fish minnows guppies to a catfish my wife had in school and put in the pond when school closed She claimed it was eating fish in her tank in school but I scoffed at her Catfish ain t meat eaters they re algae eaters Claimed the resident fish expert a retired commercial fisherman who shall remain nameless in this discussion At any rate I found out later after my population thinned out and he doubled in size that when they get a certain size they start eating meat He musta ate a couple dozen small goldies or more and at least 50 minnows That sucker was big enough for an early bird special at Denny s before I finally caught him I have 3 nice lionhead goldfish that have grown nicely over the summer I just hope they winter okay My population currently stands at about 25 goldfish many going on 2 years old a half dozen or so nice shebunkins 1 2 years old two dandy large 12 golden koi maybe a dozen assorted koi culls this year half a dozen small fantail goldies a couple black moors and assorted minnows guppies etc all in the BP There s 50 10 centers in the TP I m assuming there all still there as I ve found no bodies and can t see anything except around a small hole where the LRB discharges because of the Parrot Feathers When I put feed in I usually see a half dozen or so around the hole but no telling how many still alive all together One thing I noticed about fish in the TP is they always hide and are seldom seen even before the Parrot Feathers I don t know why that is unless it s the shallow water that makes them nervous They don t act that way in the BP Go back To Index Keith G Brough s report At 07 03 9 25 97 0100 you wrote Hi Gosta Read your pond report and noted that you have had some problems this year too As you may remember I was having a lot of problems mostly because I started off knowing little or nothing about the art of keeping a pond with fish Yeah It seems I have problems EVERY year and I ve been at it over 10 years One of the things keeps me interested I guess I have learned a lot a lot from you thank you and now have a pond that is clear for the first 18 inches and getting better by the day of its 3 feet depth I can actually watch the fish swimming about and eating the food we put in and the plants the crispus is being stripped to just twigs The Ghost Koi are the worst offenders they also root about in the pots despite the two inch stones in the top Probably koi are what s killing my plant stuff too Like I said I m gonna try fencing them off next year You mentioned in your report that the Hyacinths were burned up Well when the Ph in my pond was so high one of the problems was that the water hyacinths were going brown at the edges and dying back and the lillies faded and died back Also a number of fish died one with its gills stuck shut and the water developed a brownish hue that is when it wasn t bright green when the algae started So perhaps you have a Ph problem I ll look into it I have a

  • Prostate Problems - WHAT THE HECK HAS BEEN GOING ON IN MY WORLD-PART 7!!! By Mark A. Moyad, M.D., M.P.H.
of a man In addition carrying a lot of belly fat can cause so many other health problems that it just makes sense to exercise more and to try to reduce belly fat regardless of your situation prostate cancer or not 56 Does The Drug Modafinil Also Known as Provigil Reduce Fatigue That Some Cancer Patients Experience After Treatment Reference Morrow GR et al ASCO Annual Meeting 2005 abstract 8012 page 732 Modafinil is a drug used in psychiatry for a number of things like a condition called narcolepsy but since it has a stimulatory effect and a low rate of side effects some researchers have thought that it may reduce fatigue after cancer treatment Now this study was conducted in women that had completed breast cancer treatment about 2 years earlier and were still experiencing significant fatigue This trial was with 51 women and it did not include a placebo so we have to be careful here before we can definitely determine the impact Regardless women taking 200 mg of this drug with breakfast daily reported an improvement with sleep less drowsiness improvement in mood and activity and less fatigue Currently this drug is being tested in a larger trial with a placebo but the initial reports are encouraging because fatigue from cancer treatment can be a significant problem Talk to your doctor about the latest results with this drug if you are interested 57 Does The Dietary Supplement Black Cohosh Help With Hot Flashes More Than A Placebo Reference Pockaj BA et al ASCO Annual Meeting 2005 abstract 8013 page 732 Black cohosh is a popular supplement in the U S and in Europe to help reduce hot flashes but it really has not been tested well in cancer patients despite the fact that sales in cancer patients are very very good Patients took 20 mg of the supplement twice a day versus placebo and this study was done in breast cancer patients The treatment was short and the duration of the study was short just 8 weeks and the dosage was low but researchers found that black cohosh did NOT work any better than a placebo Although the side effects were low and similar in both groups this study did show that using a lower dosage of black cohosh for a short period of time did not reduce hot flashes better than a sugar pill We have to wait for more studies in men and with higher dosages but in the meantime this is not good initial news for this supplement Highlights from the American Urological Association AUA Annual Meeting May 21 26 2005 San Antonio Texas 58 What Is The Number One Cause Of Death In Prostate Cancer Patients Besides Prostate Cancer Itself Reference Groome PA et al AUA Annual Meeting 2005 abstract 193 page 53 Canadian researchers attempted to answer the question What are other diseases or conditions that are a threat to a man s life after deciding on treatment for prostate cancer A total of 587 patients diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer with surgery and radiation therapy that still died within 10 years after treatment were considered or included in this study The most common cause of death apart from prostate cancer was actually heart disease 36 6 of the patients Therefore this is a great study because it identifies other things that clinicians and patients should be aware of after being treated for prostate cancer What does this mean to you It means that if you have been treated for localized prostate cancer then one of the best things that you can do is to make sure that you reduce your risk of heart disease This is why I tell patients with localized prostate cancer that have been treated with conventional therapy to make sure to followup with their primary care doctor or even cardiologist to make sure that their risk of heart disease is brought down to as close to zero as possible What is the point of being treated for prostate cancer if a man still dies young of heart disease Therefore after your prostate cancer doctor and you have been considered cancer free please make sure that someone is following you and treating you for other conditions to make sure that you live a long and better life I have no doubt that most men being treated for localized prostate cancer are reducing their risk of dying from prostate cancer but it also means it is time to reduce your risk of dying from other conditions In other words it has never made sense to me to move you out of the way of an on coming truck prostate cancer only to have you walk in front of an on coming car heart disease We need and can move you out of the way of both vehicles and part of the responsibility is up to you 59 Can Some Men On Androgen Deprivation Therapy ADT Experience A Reduction In Thyroid Hormone Levels Reference Cecchini L et al AUA Annual Meeting 2005 abstract 817 page 221 It is easy to argue that ADT can improve the chances of living longer after being diagnosed with more advanced prostate cancer However since men are living longer on ADT for prostate cancer it seems that the side effects from this treatment are gaining more attention This should not be surprising because men are using this therapy earlier and earlier and with a variety of treatments therefore side effects that can be prevented or treated should receive attention In the old days not that long ago docs only gave ADT to men with very advanced prostate cancer so side effects from this treatment were not really discussed because the more immediate issue was one of life and death However now some men are on or on and off this therapy for years and years so we are beginning to learn more and more about the side effects of ADT For example we all

with prostate cancers that do not look particularly aggressive under a microscope the majority of men whose cancers are found with P S A tests these days can do perfectly well with no treatment for at least 20 years All they need is to be monitored by a doctor to ensure that their P S A levels are not shooting up On the other hand a Swedish study published last month in The New England Journal of Medicine lumping men with more as well as less aggressive cancers found that those who had their prostates removed had a lower risk of death and of metastatic cancers than those who did nothing But these men generally started out with larger tumors than the ones that are now being found with P S A s So what is a man to do The problem said Dr Timothy Wilt a professor of medicine at the Minneapolis V A Medical Center is that most men eventually develop prostate cancer but most of the time it grows so slowly that it never causes problems and eventually they die of something else never knowing they had cancer Unless of course a doctor starts biopsying their prostate With annual P S A tests sooner or later many men will end up with a biopsy And as we repeatedly biopsy men we are likely to find these subclinical prostate cancers Dr Wilt said There is no doubt that we will label more people as abnormal telling them they have cancer and throwing them into a terrifying whirl of decision making Despite the arguments in the academic medical community about what the test means most men are still having it done But now they have to address these questions When should a low P S A level lead to a biopsy and when should a tiny tumor be treated There is no easy answer Dr Thompson said In deciding whether to do a biopsy doctors must weigh other factors along with the P S A Did the patient s father die of prostate cancer Is he fat Fat men tend to have lower P S A levels than thinner men so a low level in a fat man might be more ominous Is he African American Blacks tend to develop more aggressive prostate cancers and at younger ages Are his P S A levels steadily rising with no apparent cause like an enlarged prostate or an infection both of which cause elevations in the P S A Or does he have an enlarged prostate no family history and a previous biopsy that found no cancer You can t condense it to a sound bite Dr Thompson said But many doctors he added are either unaware of the new views on P S A or are ignoring them I was presenting some of the data recently to a gentleman over 50 who was visiting our institution Dr Thompson said He looked at me with kind of wide eyes and said
