strata by strong rainfall during the rainy periods in March April and September November At the time of purchase the mostly deforested pieces of land were 80 arid Only a few tree copses had been preserved along the only watercourse running across the valley The landscapes alternate between vast areas of savana a few copses of arid forest and a few small woodier areas along the watercourse Water is scarce and rapidly absorbed by the sandy earth The lack of water is obvious and made worse by severe summer droughts Prospects The last evaluation of this land was conducted by a Tchendukua team in January 2010 14 Kogi and 25 Wiwa families were settled there a total of 254 people This land enables families leading a semi nomadic life to spend a few months there before leaving again for lands at a higher altitude Around twenty Kogi live permanently on this land Two kankurua have been built and reforestation initiatives have been put in place on two plots notably in the northern and northwestern part of the land the closest to the valley s only water source The main concern for the Kogi families settled on this land is how to live on good terms with the Wiwa families members of another ethnic group much more influenced by the outside world Reforestation The regeneration of forest cover in order to preserve particularly damaged soil is a major priority The families settled there practise a type of livestock farming with a much lower grazing load as well as cultivating food crops There is a large variety of crops mostly replanted by the Kogi families who settled there recently as well as many fruit trees Certain non food crops have been reintroduced including calabash and totumo used to make containers as well
