  • Holocaust and Tolerance Education Center – TBT
being used a lot these days They bring back memories of another time in history It was not that long ago 70 years that the events of the Holocaust began There are similarities to today s disruptive climate and it is therefore important for young people to be told the truth and learn the facts of the Holocaust so that they can practice tolerance in their own lives By hearing stories from survivors and first generation survivors the facts about the Holocaust can be passed from generation to generation Our Programs In the fall of 2012 The Holocaust and Tolerance Education Program at the Temple Beth Tikvah s Asa Center will introduce programs developed for young people ages 9 15 In these programs children will listen to inspiring age appropriate experiences from those survivors who are still with us The children will have the opportunity to view and touch real Holocaust artifacts brought here from Germany by survivors or their families Movies and slide shows will augment the live presentation These programs will also include discussions of what happens when people are treated badly by others what happens when societies sanction cruel treatment and ignore suffering and how this relates to the growing problem of bullying and intolerance in today s society In the future we plan to expand our outreach to the teenage young adult and adult generations Our objective is to be an outstanding educational facility for all people supported by both the Jewish and secular communities Our Facility Temple Beth Tikvah in Fullerton opened the Asa Center in 2011 Our modern building houses classrooms Our library is a comfortable room where lectures can be held On the grounds of the Center is a Memorial Garden which is a moving tribute to the Jews and others who perished

at home although the service was completely in Hebrew Rabbi Milhander was called to the Torah for an aliyah and Miriam was given the honor of reading the Mi Sheberach for the soldiers of Israel in Hebrew After the service we joined together in the Kiddush and motzi and then returned to our hotel We all reunited at 6 00 p m to go up to the terrace of the hotel where we did havdalah and tried to light the first candle of Chanukah Being a bit too breezy our candles wouldn t cooperate so we returned to the lobby where we were able to utilize the Chanukah menorah provided by the hotel We then boarded our bus to travel a short distance for dinner to the Anna Ticho House http www go out com ticho where we were treated to quite a feast It was the 44 th wedding anniversary of Barbara Jim Bevans and our dinner doubled as both a farewell dinner for the group as well as an anniversary party for the lovebirds From an array of salads to our main course 3 choices of fish and then to sinful desserts we had much more food than any of us could possible handle What a way to end our culinary experience in Israel After dinner we boarded our bus to return to the hotel to pick up last minute things Then it was time to head to the airport for our flight home We had a guide for the trip to the airport so we were able to get just a few more sites under our belts and more information to absorb into our heads about the country Our flight home was uneventful except for a couple of diapers that had been flushed down the toilet causing

  • Israel Trip December 6th – TBT
December 6th December 6 2012 Our day started at 7 30 heading to the Knesset After passing through security we met our guide and began our personalized tour We were introduced to the leadership of Israel and learned about all the symbolism on the Chagall tapestries that adorn one of the walls There are also mosaics done by Chagall throughout the large room in which we learned about the Knesset Then it was time to go into the room where Knesset holds its sessions they were not working today You can see that the shape of the tables chairs is like a menorah The president of Israel has a seat of honor off to the right since he is not an active participant in the proceedings of Parliament From the Knesset we went to the Israel Museum where the Shrine of the Book houses the Dead Sea Scrolls We took time to view all the artifacts and pieces of scrolls that fill the museum From there we went to the Supreme Court of Israel and learned about the judicial system Israel has a very transparent approach to its government and we were able to sit in on one of the court cases for a few minutes We toured the rest of the court complex which is beautiful in its use of all the natural lighting available as well as its way of bringing the outdoors into the building Then it was back to the Israel Museum for lunch and some time to view the archaeological Judaica and art exhibits From the Museum we headed to Mt Herzl where we learned about the man who said If you will it it is no dream The interactive presentation really brought Herzl s story to life From Mt Herzl we made our way
