  • Evolution-Loving Evangelical Comes To Houston | Thank God For Evolution
good argument as to why God s word is usually thought of as ancient text what was revealed to shepherds and farmers and fishermen 2 000 years ago something that was written on animal skins and preserved in clay pots he tells Hair Balls Looking at that from a sacred science based perspective from an evolution theology point of view God s word is revealed to us by every fact that s discovered by science Literally every single discovery by science is a revelation of God of reality It s God revealing truth That s a far more realistic than the idea that God would have chosen fishermen and scribes 2 000 years ago and whispered in their head and then they wrote down perfectly what was being dictated Sacred science Evolution theology What the hell Oops We mean What the heck Some people criticize evolution for being just a theory well it s not just a theory It s a fact And it s not just a fact it s theology It s about God God s will God s word God s ways The theory of evolution is based on a mountain of factual evidence But when I say it s theology it s because it also strengthens and deepens our understanding of the divine our understanding of God s word says Dowd Without this world view it s impossible to have an accurate understanding of God s nature or know what God s up to today You re going to still be thinking that God did all the really cool stuff 2 000 years ago Typically where people have found their sense of the holy the sacred the deeply meaningful in religion And that makes sense because for 99 of human existence answers to questions like How

  • Book Review: "Thank GOD for EVOLUTION" | Thank God For Evolution
Los Angeles Times By M G Lord Two hundred years after his birth English scientist Charles Darwin author of On the Origin of Species is a powerful global brand To commemorate his bicentennial the Darwin industry as Cambridge historian Martin J S Rudwick terms it has been in high gear generating books papers greeting cards T shirts car ornaments and of course fresh scholarship Surprisingly it has not generated much controversy except in the United States which has a stubborn contingent of religious fundamentalists who maintain that the Earth is only 6 000 years old Yet they too may soon be won over if Michael Dowd author of Thank God for Evolution has his way Dowd is a Christian evangelical minister his wife Connie Barlow an atheistic science writer Their marriage evokes a Hollywood romantic comedy After being born again and receiving a master of divinity at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary Dowd met Barlow author of two books with evolution in their titles at a cosmology lecture Against all odds they fell in love and found a mission to travel around the country preaching that evolution is indeed God s plan Today the couple has no permanent residence Dowd thumps

  • Reverend brings outside the box ideas to town | Thank God For Evolution
Rasa at 800R Spencer Highway The event is part of the couple s Gospel of Evolution Roadshow stop in the Houston area through February The stop in Houston coincides with the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin who formulated the theory of evolution That anniversary backdrop is the perfect setting for Dowd s primary mission to merge evolutionary theory with spiritual belief Dowd s book Thank God for Evolution has been praised by both religious leaders and Noble laureates and provides the thesis for his message I think the core of the message is that evolution can be understood in an inspiring sacred and meaningful way said Dowd While many traditional fundamentalists whether Christian Jew or Muslim view science and religion as mutually exclusive Dowd speaks around the country on faith as married to scientific theory I m showing how the two can be mutually enriching he said Science is enriched when it deals with questions of meaning and value and religion is enriched when it is grounded to a religious understanding and our best collective understanding of the nature of reality Although Dowd admits that his message is often characterized by some traditionalists as unorthodox he maintains that at its core it is about expanding your world It s not about getting people to believe a certain way it s inviting people to see that science reveals divine truth that science reveals truth inside us in healthy ways and that evolution can help us become more compassionate understanding and generous he said Dowd is a former fundamentalist who had rejected the idea of evolution fought against its teaching in schools and generally regarded science as a cold system of data devoid of any human or spiritual resonance His re evaluation came as his own frame of references shifted and expanded

  • Book Review by Fr. Mervyn Fernando | Thank God For Evolution
Julian Huxley Teilhard de Chardin Very importantly this Story is open to and even welcomes multiple interpretations The Big Bang origin of the Universe is almost universally accepted as of now in the scientific world but what it means in different religious spiritual perspectives or even to an individual will invariably differ Dowd makes much of the distinction between Event factual measurable Story subjective and Meaning highly subjective The root source of conflict in personal and social life and among the religions is the tendency to confuse Meaning and Story with Event Unconsciously we assume that what actually happened is not only our story about what happened but also what we make that story mean and if the other disagrees he she can only be mad or bad On the other hand some of the old creation myths of ancient peoples will have to be re interpreted in the light of the new data of an evolutionary Cosmos Because creation stories of classical religions and native peoples emerged well before the revelation of an evolutionary cosmos those venerable stories can fulfil their deep time potential only if the ancient cosmologies are creatively re interpreted to mesh with the fruits of today s science Note the positive attitude Dowd takes towards the ancient creation mythologies he does not dismiss them as nonsense rather situates them in their respective Sitz im Leben recognizing their potentiality to be fulfiled by the new science In fact the new cosmology can be meaningfully interpreted as a new mythology See e g The View from the Center of the Universe by Primack and Abrams a very insightful presentation of the mythology of modern cosmology Flat earth faith evolutionary faith One of the major planks of Dowd s thesis is that God s revelation comes through Nature and its unfolding evolution as discovered by modern science which he sees as a vehicle of God s revelation Here we may recall that for St Thomas Aquinas the first revelation of God is found in the book of Nature and later in the book of the Bible Now we know it is an on going process not a static one and our understanding of it is also open to change and revision Science is quintessentially falsifiable and revisable Dowd calls this revelation through Nature and science public revelation namely a revelation open to all irrespective of religious or ideological persuasions In his view revelations enshrined in some religious traditions the Scriptures are private revelations As such they are 1 meaningful only to the respective believers and 2 as Scriptures namely as the written Word not that amenable to change These scriptural traditions pre dating a Copernican understanding of the cosmos fall under the category of what he calls flat earth faiths A distinction must be made at this point between flat earth faith and evolutionary faith What I mean by flat earth faith is not people believing the world is flat Rather it refers to any perspective in which

  • Untrivializing God | Thank God For Evolution
s also the only thing that will help us unite as a species across ethnic and religious differences in service of co creating a healthy world together Only an evolutionary world view can help us understand how all God concepts or all concepts of ultimate reality all answer the question How did we get here How do you get from everything that isn t specifically literal in the Bible is of the devil to what you re talking about How do you bridge that gap It happens in different ways For myself I came to see that I got a bigger more real understanding of God and that my tradition the core concept of my tradition moved from being mythic to being real Like for example original sin I don t believe in original sin I don t believe in the fall of Adam and Eve I know that I have an unchosen nature so do all human beings I have inherited proclivities I have instincts For example we all have cravings for sugar salt and fat because for 99 percent of human history it wasn t easy to find sugar salt and fat Having cravings for these things allowed our ancestors to survive long enough to reproduce Today it s very easy to find sugar salt and fat So the craving for sugar salt and fat doesn t make sense in the world we have to live in it made sense in a world in which our instincts developed Experts say that the rise of fundamentalism came as a rejection of modernity and reason Can you talk about that When you think the universe is like a complex clock and God s the clock maker outside the universe that s a trivial God That s a God that must be believed in or not That s the kind of God that begs for a book written by Richard Dawkins The God Delusion because that vision of God if you interpret it literally is a delusion It s an illusion it s a fiction God has become so trivial a concept in the West that God supposedly the creator of the universe is less real than the universe Nobody would debate the reality of the universe And yet it s completely legitimate to debate the reality of God Does God exist is a totally legitimate question in this culture What Darwin did and not just Darwin but the whole evolutionary world view is that it allows us to see that today when people look out and say universe what they mean is everything everyone and everything But what so many fundamentalists are saying is that God put evidence of evolution out there to tempt our faith If what you mean by the Gospel the saving good news God s great news is that a select group of people get to avoid the fires of hell when they die so that the Gospel s reduced to fire insurance that s a

  • The East Tennessee Report | Thank God For Evolution
Schedule Store The Great Story Search The East Tennessee Report WWST FM Knoxville Interview with Frank Murphy As a former pastor Michael Dowd is a great interviewee As the interviewer all I had to do was ask a few simple questions reset who the guest was at regular intervals and make sure the show ended on time Dowd the author of Thank God for Evolution could have easily filled the half hour without me To say that I was extremely enthusiastic about the topic would be an understatement The idea of The Great Story or Evolutionary Epic fascinates me I have long believed in both the concept of creation and the facts of evolution Simply put six of God s days equal about 14 billion of our years At the end of the interview that aired this morning I felt that there was still plenty of ground to cover I asked Michael if he could stay for another thirty minute show which will air next Sunday I should have used this technique to extend my interviews with Jon Jefferson and Dr Bill Bass which always seem to end too soon Since I enjoyed the conversation so much I thought you

  • Pastor believes acceptance of evolution can deepen devotion to God | Thank God For Evolution
Unitarian Universalist Church on Kingston Pike God didn t stop revealing truths vital to human well being back when people believed the world was flat and religious insights were recorded on animal skin Dowd said God is still revealing today through the worldwide self correcting scientific process The primary way that reality is revealed is in facts facts are God s native tongue Now when I see a new Hubble space photo or learn of a new fossil form I don t think to myself as I used to Oh no how does this fit with Genesis I instead think Look how cool look what God is revealing to us today Dowd who attended Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia where he majored in Biblical studies and philosophy has pastored three United Church of Christ congregations For the past six years he has been living on the road with his wife Connie Barlow and speaking to hundreds of congregations across the United States His belief that science is vital to Christianity led him to write a book called Thank God For Evolution which was published last year and garnered endorsements from several Nobel prize winners Dowd believes that a lack of integrity lies at the root of many of the world s problems and a key part of developing integrity is coming to grips with the reality unveiled by science I would say lack of integrity is the primary cause of suffering in the world and this lack is evident in corporations families and states Dowd said Integrity is what religious people might call being right with God or being aligned with reality as it is and not as we wish it was I keep coming back to the issue that evolution theology is a call of integrity at all levels
