the scaly reptilian skin of our ancestors Some of our beliefs he claims may have so little utility as to disappear altogether just as the primate tail was lost within our lineage of apes Religious fundamentalists do have one thing right Dowd claims Reconciling ancient texts with modern understandings is no solution We cannot command that a flat Earth faith jump into a lukewarm bath drawn by science or step into a cold shower of reason The translation and reinterpretation of ancient texts must be bold and meaningful and resonate profoundly with the core truths of all traditions The epic of evolution he believes must be presented not simply as a red in tooth and claw theory but as an awe inspiring and energetic sacred story our story In my estimation Dowd does a superb job in reinterpreting ancient myths and certain doctrines by distinguishing the different languages used by science and religion to relay truth He speaks of day and night language dream language and experiential knowing in a way that does not discredit reason or the scientific facts For him there need not be conflict His approach is not either or but both and and in mutual respect I suggest that both Richard Dawkins book The God Delusion and Michael Dowd s book Thank God for Evolution be read by all who wish to integrate the new findings of science with the best of our Christian heritage They do actually compliment each other In fact Dowd has included in the appendix of his book Dawkin s letter on religion to his 10 year old daughter and refers to some of the biologist s teaching in his own text I also suggest that big box stores sell both side by side from the same shelf Instead when searching I

his metaphysical views regarding the existence of absolute space time that were later abandoned And in fact his physical laws of motion and gravitation were revised and or replaced by twentieth century revolutions in physics This latter fact is sometimes seized upon by postmoderns to support the view that all science is relative there are no scientific truths The postmodernist view was originally a perspective of the left but right wing conservative evangelicals conveniently exploit a position on scientific relativism to cast doubt on evolutionary theory in support of creationism or intelligent design I leave this irony aside to pursue a larger point There are indeed many puzzles and problems for evolutionists to deal with And the evolutionary paradigm Thomas Kuhn s terminology from his 1971 masterpiece The Structure of Scientific Revolutions may eventually be overthrown We see no hint of this as yet although some sociobiologists no less confident in evolution than Darwin such as E O Wilson hope for the crackle of thin ice see Wilson s Sociobiology The New Synthesis 1975 But this is all part of what Sir Karl Popper called the adventure of science Popper wrote in 1959 We and those who share our attitude will hope to make new discoveries The Logic of Scientific Discovery These discoveries never come by ignoring our most successful scientific theories They come by having a great deal of confidence in say Newtonian mechanics gravitational theory or evolution and testing exploring observing with a precision impossible without these theories and running up against their limitations Although evolutionary theory does not presently display any serious shortcomings the possibility that it may be augmented or overthrown is exciting And the insight provided by evolution as it stands is profound and inspirational Darwin wrote when we no longer look at an organic being as something wholly beyond comprehension when we regard every production of nature as one that has had a long history how far more interesting I speak from experience does the study of natural history become It is more than interesting At the exit of the Splash exhibit at our beloved Barton Springs is a quote by American Naturalist John Muir that eloquently captures one of the deeper implications of evolutionary theory When one tugs at a single thing in nature he finds it attached to the rest of the world How does this idea render our existence less meaningful Where is the threat to metaphysical speculation The only tension is between literal fundamentalist dogma and enlightened understanding It is unspeakably sad that we will revisit this debate in the Texas Education Agency hearings on textbook adoptions later this year I teach future math and science educators in the well regarded UTeach program at the University of Texas A significant minority of students each year are creationists Their viewpoints are expressed and discussed and we all have the opportunity to see the stunted vision of biology they represent I have every confidence that due to the almost heroic efforts of

him This is not just scientific secular knowledge This is religious knowledge The history of the cosmos earth life and humanity as one narrative one story is ultimate reality revealing itself to humans Seeing life in this way gives humans an intimacy with the divine that s been lost through millennia he contends Studying evolution is like following cosmic bread crumbs back to God Dinosaur bones and prehistoric artifacts are here to teach us faith not test it Life is something every human being can not NOT believe in To get right with God we have to get right with reality To reject evolution is to reject reality and ultimately God Creation Myths A Metaphor For One RealityThe scientific facts of evolution comprise a public revelation of God s grace Dowd contends Unlike the private revelation that occurred to Paul on the road to Damascus this one is equally accessible to all Looking up at the night sky fills every human being with wonder he said No matter the names people use the awe with which they approach that divine intelligence is the same The various world religions are different metaphors for the truth of the whole that continually creating universe we all are Dowd believes Because humans are a smaller nesting doll there is no way to get out of that position to look at the whole from the outside We rely instead on analogies and metaphors to describe the essence of our unifying reality Dowd said People in different parts of the world encountered different aspects of that one reality and they described it in different ways Dowd said The creation stories of those who live in a harsh desert climate and those in a lush tropical climate are vastly different for example Yet each delivers a metaphor that s sound When the Genesis story speaks of God creating man from dust that s literal truth Dowd said Every creation myth is an attempt to describe the essence of reality grasped by human beings Such an understanding can help people accept other religions and beliefs Dowd said They all make deep sense if you interpret their metaphors Dowd showed images from the Hubble Space Telescope to underscore the grandeur of the universe No belief system is needed to embrace that reality he said The fact that the cosmos with its shifting dance of life and death exists is evidence enough It s not about believing in some theology It s about what we know scientifically Those whom Dowd calls flat earth Christians are rooted in the evidential mindset of the past he said The term applies equally to Muslims or Buddhists or Hindus All the world religions were formulated when humankind believed the earth was flat Evolution theology offers a radical third perspective to atheism and creationism or intelligent design Dowd said Viewed through this lens we see Biblical tenets as metaphors for the ultimate reality that encompasses all There s no need for dissension between camps The
