  • Clergy Letter / Emerging Churches | Thank God For Evolution
How large is the Evolution Theology movement and What kinds of individuals churches and other organizations find a sacred view of evolution inspiring These questions are not easy to answer of course for two reasons The first is that there are many different ways that people have referred to a sacred meaningful interpretation of cosmic history Second there are far far more individuals and institutions that align with Evolutionary Theology than have ever used the term In future blog posts I ll introduce and share something about the many and diverse groups that embrace an understanding of grace that goes back billions not just thousands of years Here I d like to just mention two of the more interesting and inspiring examples both within Christianity the Clergy Letter Project and the Emerging Church movement The Clergy Letter Project centers on a list of 11 000 clergy who have signed a letter publicly stating that they see no conflict between their faith and a mainstream scientific understanding of evolution The project also promotes Evolution Sunday whichever Sunday falls closest to Darwinâ s birthday February 12th Both of these are the brainchild of Michael Zimmerman a biologist and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Butler University in Indianapolis Indiana Not only has the list of Clergy Letter signers continued to grow every year but the national media attention it generates such as in The New York Times continues to grow too I wrote briefly about the Emerging Church movement a couple of months ago in my Progressive Evangelicals Emergents blog post while I was attending Soularize a yearly gathering of leaders actively engaged in the Emerging Church conversation Since then my book Thank God for Evolution was sent to fifty of the leading bloggers in this movement I

to an article that appeared two days earlier in the Louisville Courier Journal titled Will Science Religion Kiss and Make Up Ken Ham is the president and founder of Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum in Petersburg Kentucky He blogged AiG welcomed Rev Dowd and his wife and a Courier Journal reporter to the Creation Museum and granted interviews All were extremely courteous and even though Rev Dowd and his wife totally disagreed with the message of the museum they were very complimentary about the museum itself No Ken Ham has not misquoted us Nor did the Courier Journal My wife Connie aptly expressed our view of the Creation Museum as reported in the newspaper It really ups the ante for the rest of us to present evolution in a way that s memorable has a narrative story line in it and directly connects to our personal lives and personal challenges said Barlow 55 You walk into any of these other great museums in the world you re looking at some cool fossils and great interpretations she said But there isn t a story Thus to reiterate the first sentence The New Atheists and Young Earth Creationists are both playing vital necessary roles in furthering the evolution of religious perspectives The New Atheists are assisting the evolution of religion by ridiculing trivial uninspiring notions of God the Young Earth Creationists are doing their part by ridiculing trivial uninspiring notions of evolution Intrigued Hear more on this in the REALizing God video clip here and other video clips on the FAQ page on this website Or as I wrote on page 108 of TGFE Our common creation story offers a refreshingly intimate scientifically compelling and theologically inspiring vision of God that can provide common ground for both skeptics and religious

or philosophical worldview even if you re non Christian or anti religious once you think about such traditional religious language from the perspective of Evolutionary Theology When we truly get public revelation and facts as God s native tongue we realize that of course if we want vibrant health individually relationally and planetarily nothing is more important than coming home to Reality and submitting to what God has been revealing for hundreds of years through the entire range of sciences God s Word doesn t get any more real than this Ancient texts no matter how inspiring cannot hold a candle to the authority of measurable undeniable facts And lest I be misunderstood this is in no way a denigration of the written scriptures See Part II Reality is Speaking and Chapter 18 Our Evolving Understanding of God s Word in my book Thank God for Evolution TGFE which is available as a free pdf download here When we truly get that Original Sin and The Fall are traditional ways of pointing to our animal instincts our unchosen nature or inherited proclivities we realize that of course if we want freedom from bondage if we want heavenly joy if we want peace that passes all understanding of course we must choose and keep choosing with the support of others to grow in divine integrity in Christ It won t happen naturally We will instinctually serve older baser drives generally those relating to food safety sex and feel good states of consciousness The path of Christ like evolutionary integrity humility authenticity responsibility and service really is our only way forward individually and collectively Repentance salvation and the second coming of Christ don t get any more real than this When we truly get that there is power in both message and

see the wide range of religious leaders and congregants as well as Nobel laureates and other leading scientists and science oriented writers and academics including many non Christians who have publicly endorsed my book Thank God for Evolution How the Marriage of Science and Religion Will Transform Your Life and Our World If its broad appeal is also a stumbling block for you I invite you to sample first my 12 page Evolutionary Christianity essay Then as led by the Holy Spirit prayerfully follow your heart in deciding whether to engage with the book itself Thank God for Evolution is not for everyone I wrote it with six very different audiences in mind Those who embrace evolution but don t have joy peace or a deep sense of meaning and purpose in their lives Conservative and liberal Roman Catholic Protestant Orthodox and Anabaptist believers Progressive Christians and those involved in the Emerging Church movement WWJD type evangelical Christ followers i e those committed to following Jesus in His steps Anyone and everyone struggling with their sinful nature Non Christians ex Christians people of no faith and those of other faiths Thank God for Evolution is NOT intended for those whose walk with God is solidly embedded within a strict literalist interpretation of scripture Those who think that God stopped speaking and providing clear guidance in the distant past are not likely to find my book helpful nor inspiring But those who experience twinges of doubt when the book of Genesis is used line by line to explain the creation of this world and those who realize that a loving God would still be revealing things we couldn t have received thousands of years ago and would still be guiding us today just as in biblical times these types of religious

  • Florida Panhandle | Thank God For Evolution
my time with 125 emerging church evangelical leaders in the Bahamas see my last post Connie and I have driven from St Louis to Lexington to Louisville to Cincinnati to Birmingham and finally to and throughout the Florida panhandle from Pensacola to Panama City A few highlights After an evening workshop in St Louis and Sunday service and evening program in Lexington we spent nearly a week in Louisville at an event called Festival of Faiths It was especially wonderful to spend time with Mary Ellen Hill a gifted artist and dramatic Great Story teller and Mark Steiner of Cultivating Connections a dear friend and long time colleague in what Thomas Berry and others refer to as The Great Work Connie and I offered concurrent programs for several hundred high school students at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville Universal Stories From the Stars to Our Own Lives The religion reporter from the Louisville Courier Journal Peter Smith wrote a delightful article on this Then the following day he Connie and I drove to the new Creation Museum near the Cincinnati airport and spent practically the entire day there When his article on this excursion is published I ll mention it and include a link in a blog post When we left Louisville headed for Pensacola we stopped at Nicholas Fiedler s home in Birmingham Nick is the co originator of the Nick and Josh Podcast which has 200 000 subscribers and is one of the largest podcasts in the emerging church movement Nick and I met and had a nice albeit brief connection in the Bahamas and I recommend this podcast for progressive Christians and others open to thinking broadly and creatively about religious and cultural issues A few days ago I had dinner and stimulating conversation with Okaloosa

  • Progressive Evangelicals / Emergents | Thank God For Evolution
embrace or at least accept an evolutionary worldview My introduction to the emerging church movement came a couple of years ago when Spencer Burke a former megachurch pastor and founder of theOOZE com the main networking site for emergent progressive evangelicals contacted me Spencer mentioned that a friend had alerted him to an article Preachers of a New Pentecost written about Connie s and my itinerant ministry in What is Enlightenment magazine He asked me to send him a copy of my 4 hour Evolutionary Christianity DVD set which I did A few weeks later after he had watched the DVDs we talked for nearly two hours on the phone We ve been friends ever since Last January we roomed together for a week in Hawaii at the first International Conference on the Evolution of Religion where Daniel Dennett and I were evening keynote presenters I was the lone evolutionary evangelist that week among sixty leading scholars in the exciting new field of Evolutionary Religious Studies As I discussed briefly in my Beyond Evidence Responding to Creationists post while I find the evidence for evolution utterly compelling as do the vast majority of the world s scientist and millions of devout religious believers I d have to say that the main reason I m evangelistic about evolution is because of how it expands and deepens my understanding and experience of the gospel intensifies my communion with God and makes it much easier to live a Christ centered Christ like life Whether or not future generations look back at our time as The Great Blashpemy as I suggested six weeks ago I m confident of this Once the emerging church movement catches fire with a Thank God for Evolution message watch out I predict that we are on the verge of

  • It Just Doesn't Get Any Better! | Thank God For Evolution
blog post Life as an Evolutionary Evangelist one of the richest aspects of our itinerant lifestyle is falling ever more deeply in love with Nora North America in all her stupendous beauty and diversity September and early October in New England are fabulous in this regard Here I am atop Mt Chocorua near Tamworth NH a few weeks ago Hiking up Mt Chocorua was especially meaningful for me as this was the first mountain I climbed in my youth nearly forty years ago My father took me to Chocorua when I was ten years old and I had long forgotten what a formative experience it was When I was back at the summit three weeks ago however I remembered clearly Tears streamed down my face I had my cell phone with me so I was able to leave a message of gratitude on my dad s voice mail One of Connie s and my most meaningful and playful rituals is regularly immersing ourselves in the rivers streams and lakes of Nora as well as in Oceania both Atlantic and Pacific oceans The picture to the right is Connie at high tide jumping 15 feet off a cliff on the coast

years Clare Hallward a dear friend of ours from Montreal Canada has invited Connie and me to stay at their family cottage on the coast of Maine It s a nine bedroom four bathroom house that is filled with family during the summer but used only infequently the rest of the year Prouts Neck a peninsula southeast of Portland part of Scarborough Maine has thus become one of our favorite sacred places in all of North America The bulk of my book Thank God for Evolution was written here last September and October This year we re back for three glorious weeks in paradise The last five and a half years Connie and I have lived and worked entirely on the road living in people s homes offering programs in virtually every kind of religious and non religious setting imaginable We ve found that if we work region by region and go at a comfortable pace it takes us about three years to cycle the country With TGFE coming out in November however and with a strong desire to include all the major cities of America in the first year of our book tour this means that we will be cycling the U S three times faster than we normally do You can scan down and see when we ll be in your city or region here and also here For an overview of where we ve been the last five years see here As I mentioned in my second blog post Life as an Evolutionary Evangelist we don t have an RV just a high top Dodge Sprinter van which is our bedroom on wheels Because we re almost always living with people usually folks we don t know it s a special treat when we have use of
