  • Evolution doesn't have to clash with Christianity, author tells CLU crowd | Thank God For Evolution
back Dowd spoke to the crowd while clicking through a Power Point presentation The talk was called Thank God for Evolution Science as Modern Day Scripture Dowd told the audience that throughout time religion has helped human beings define what s real and what s important It gives humans a sense of personal purpose and social cohesion In ancient times religions provided beliefs because they didn t have knowledge he said Now we do have knowledge in the form of science he said and churches need to evolve Dowd believes that rather than eclipse or lessen the presence of God scientific knowledge backed by evidence helps to strengthen the concept of God We are going through what I call an evidential reformation Dowd said Evolution he said links us with the cosmos Billions of years ago stars died and the periodic table of the elements was born followed by atoms cells multicelled organisms reptiles animals humans family groups tribes and so forth an awe inspiring process If that s not God I don t know what is Dowd said Evolution he said is like Russian nesting dolls with one ring of life developing around another always expanding in concentric rings Ancient rings of civilization involved tribes and city states which developed religions Religions tended to be based on what was deemed important and real in each culture If you re living on the tundra 5 000 years ago what s real and what s important is different from what it is today he said Tribal wisdom is not going to serve us anymore We need global wisdom That global wisdom comes to us in the form of science which is available to anyone who wants to learn It is not like the past when spiritual truth came from one enlightened

  • Bestselling Author Preaches Bold Science-Based Gospel | Thank God For Evolution
California Lutheran University I hope to help attendees celebrate facts as God s native tongue and to truly get that scientific historic and cross cultural evidence reveal God s word for today far more accurately than the Bible could ever hope to Dowd said And if Moses Jesus or the Apostle Paul were alive today they d be the first ones to shout Amen to this Accessible to all faiths and non believers the program is geared for teens and adults and is similar to what Dowd delivered last year at the United Nations Dowd served as a United Church of Christ minister for nine years in Massachusetts Ohio and Michigan He and his wife Connie Barlow a science writer and family educator launched an itinerant ministry in 2002 and have since spoken to more than 1 500 groups as America s evolutionary evangelists He believes his upcoming talk is important because idolatry of the written word has rendered the church deaf dumb and blind to what God s been faithfully revealing through evidence the past 200 years Dowd said Consequently billions of human beings not only don t appreciate the evolutionary significance of religion and religious differences their inner GPS is so wildly out of date that it s no wonder they suffer and struggle needlessly Their views of history death and human nature are not aligned with reality The discussion sponsored by CLU Religion Department the United Church of Christ in Simi Valley and Progressive Christians Uniting is part of The Memorial Just Peace Lecture Series established in 2008 by the United Church of Christ of Simi Valley in honor of the late James Henry Dekker On behalf of the United Church of Christ in Simi Valley I was eager to invite Michael because he is a critical

  • 'Evolutionary' Christians to Discuss Science as Divine Revelation | Thank God For Evolution
he hopes the roundtable discussions will present science as God s way of divine communication to this generation The 90 minute conversations he added will focus more on what evolution celebrating Christians have in common than on their differences We all honor scientific evidence as God s communication and that God is communicating new truths to Christianity today said Dowd Some questions that he intends to tackle during the sessions include how churches can evolve and be faithful to what God is revealing through science as opposed to Scripture how Christianity is related to other people equally committed to a healthy future for the planet and the difference between evolutionary and non evolutionary Christians on how they relate to others on their faith Participants will also get the chance to ask their questions live An advocate of the Epic of Evolution or The Great Story Dowd argued that there are truths God has revealed through evidential knowledge today that could not have been revealed in the Bible While science today lends evidence to platonic plates as the method God used to create the Atlantic Ocean he explained people living during biblical times would have simply said God spoke it into being or offered mythic explanations Had God tried to communicate to the Apostle Paul how creation was really created Paul would have thought it was bizarre And if Paul had written about it nobody else would have thought it was inspiring but they would have completely rejected it said Dowd Dowd s views on God and naturalistic evolution have drawn criticism from one prominent evangelical R Albert Mohler Jr president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville Ky has criticized Dowd for rejecting biblical Christianity and the belief in a personal God There is no subtlety to Dowd s

  • Evolution conference invites us all to a 'new beginning' | Thank God For Evolution
recognized as inhuman if not barbaric however much the bullying that lags behind the law The real questions with which we must certainly grapple now however if we are to deal with a new future are more cosmic in nature even more life changing than the continuing ripple of these old ones These new questions are deeply spiritual ones What is unclear is whether or not the great churches and idea agents of the society will stop trying to reinvent the past long enough to bring us all to consider what is really facing us in the future The theological implications of evolution the social and religious issues inherent in interfaith cooperation and the kinds of personal spiritual conversion necessary if global justice and national accountability is ever to be achieved are boiling up everywhere while the world ignores them In the light of traditional institutional resistance in both church and state to past issues new groups are rising everywhere to deal with the questions the old order apparently hopes simply to outlive rather than to face to adjust to to embrace One of these the question of the relation of science to religion for instance has been simmering for years while churches went on using law and politics to secure old ideas and retard the development of science in the name of God Advances in medicine suffered from the rejection of anatomy Advances in society suffered from the determination by both religion and science that people of color were anatomically psychologically and spiritually inferior to whites Advances in humanity suffered from the notion that females were physically smaller and therefore intellectually subordinate to the males of the species But this is a different world now Now the great questions of life belong to us all It is always possible of course to force people to do something as long as some group has the physical power to do so But it is not possible even then to force a group to believe something they know must be otherwise like racism or sexism or the notion of a three tiered cosmos or even the definition of life itself Now with the internet no one can keep the rest of us out of the discussion Now we can all know together what before only the educated and the elite knew Now we can get the information we need to take our own place in the decision making arena of the world No wonder the foundations of one institution after another are trembling No wonder the definition of authority is shifting No wonder it is now small groups of ordinary people who are raising the questions outside the institutions that should be guiding the public examination and discussions of them but are not No wonder institutions therefore are losing their credibility as a result This month for the first time for instance I got an invitation to participate in a project that simply sprang up out of the heads of an evangelical

  • Author's Corner: Reverend Michael Dowd | Thank God For Evolution
120 years we ve understood glaciers these massive ice sheets that have created lakes healthy soils and things like that All of these major truths that we now understand come through science So it was basically coming to see that science didn t have to conflict with my faith that a scientific world view interpreted within a sacred and meaningful way could strengthen and deepen and enrich my faith How does your book help reconcile science and religion Science is revealing divine truth God speaks through evidence But for non religious people I m trying to help them see that religion isn t merely about supernatural otherworldlyism It s about how we live ethical moral lives Our best understanding of science can help not just deepen faith but we re also seeing the naturalizing or what I talk about in my book the REALizing of religious concepts For example the Fall of Adam and Eve and Original Sin if you interpret those concepts as literal truth that a snake way back when tempted a woman to eat an apple you miss the point That story is pointing in a metaphoric way what s fundamentally true about all human beings that we all have an unchosen nature We just find ourselves this way because it makes really good evolutional sense We all have cravings for sugars salts and fats because for 99 of human history it wasn t easy to find sugars salts and fats A craving for those things allowed our ancestors to survive long enough to reproduce You have been very warmly received by the scientific and skeptical communities To have some of the world s top scientists endorse a theological book even though my theology is very inclusive it s very naturalistic it s not supernaturalistic it indicates to me that s there s a hunger for a bridge building perspective So much of the media portray this as though there s a polar opposite On the one end of the spectrum you ve got your Young Earth Creationists and Intelligent Design Creationists On the other end you ve got your new atheists Christopher Hitchens Richard Dawkins Richard Harris Daniel Dennet You d think that those were the only options on the menu Yet there are millions in the middle the bulge in the bell curve those who integrate evolution and spirituality For me it s not just a matter of reconciling the two My faith is strengthened deepened enriched by an evolutionary understanding What is your opinion on the creationist movement Young Earth Creationists I think trivialize God What kind of a God would have stopped communicating all the really important vital stuff back when people believed the world was flat and religious insights were recorded on animal skins We don t believe we know how God created the Atlantic Ocean through plate tectonics We know how the mountains were formed why the Himalayas were formed because the continent of India is slamming into the continent of

  • 'Evolutionary evangelist' to speak in Bellevue | Thank God For Evolution
our best understanding of science can enrich and strengthen and deepen our faith On a more prophetic note the way I speak to people of faith I say you inevitably trivialize religious concepts if you hold that ancient religious texts are more accurate and inspiring and reflective of God s will than our best science In trying to bridge these two ways of thinking then do you criticize either side I m trying to speak a slightly different message to religious people and nonreligious people Science and religion not only don t have to be at war they re two sides of the same coin One is a side of facts the other is a side of meaning and interpretation To the degree that religious people keep thinking religion is all about an otherworldly unnatural realm then yes religion becomes trivialized over time If God is great news for humanity but only that select group of people get to avoid hellfire that s not good news for the rest of humanity Those of us who are coming from the science based perspective do the world a tremendous disservice if we promote the fallacy of that s just the way it is A lot of scientific people in the last few decades have given a sense that if you really understand science if you really understand evolution you d be left with a depressing worldview Is it any wonder that religious people aren t climbing over each other to embrace it You speak to people of many different faiths in your travels around the country including humanists and atheists Does your philosophy endorse a certain kind of religion The word religion comes from religio to reconnect to connect back to the whole I sometimes say that integrity is my religion But what I mean by integrity isn t just being honest it s being aligned with reality as reality really is To use religious language it s being right with God I m calling everybody to a deeper religious understanding not a religion based on beliefs but religion based on knowledge OK let s take a step back Looking at the world right now and the wall that stands between science and religion in many parts of the world do you really think your message has a shot Let me tell you what I think it s inevitable I think it s absolutely inevitable that this perspective will be widely embraced It could take 30 35 years until that would be case But by the year 2025 I think we re going to see evolutionary forms of each of the major religious traditions articulated Then the artists poets storymakers and moviemakers of the world will have caught on so much that nobody under age of 30 would be caught dead believing flat Earth Christianity flat Earth Buddhism etc meaning a kind of Christianity or Buddhism that does not embrace current scientific thinking Scientists all over the world agree that everything in
