for 2012 For more about ASME click here JULY Alumnus of the Month Clare Brewer Clare joined TAV in 1996 wide eyed and very much in awe of both Graeme Morton conductor and then manager Stephen Leek She toured to USA UK Europe and around Australia and New Zealand officially catching the travel bug and gaining the couage to move to the United Kingdom in 2003 on a working holiday visa After running around London for a few months briefly popping into Buckingham Palace for a garden party Clare found herself living and working across from a Harry Potter movie set in the amazing Glencoe population 300 She immediately fell in love with the Scottish Highlands and an English mountain artist and eventually moved to the bright lights of Fort William in 2008 Clare is heavily involved in community musical theatre performing writing and directing and is musical director of The Music Shed Community Choir a group of adults dedicated to singing for pure enjoyment although with a bit more encouragement they may be persuaded to perform one day soon She works to support her artist partner Jamie Hageman managing his website and sales www jamiehageman com and is regularly forced to go to gallery wine and cheese nights all around the UK Apart from innumerable magic musical moments on stage Clare has the unequalled distinction of being photographed in profile mid guffaw and having the image plastered onto hundreds of promotional postcards People often ask her what they were laughing about during the photo shoot and she seems to remember it was something amusing about Stephen Leek wearing shorts As a Scottish resident Clare is excited to be seeing TAV performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Taking part in the world s largest arts festival is a huge deal and there s such an unbelievable buzz about the place says Clare They ll have an absolute blast JUNE Alumnus of the Month Mardi Lumsden Mardi Lumsden is an alt folk singer songwriter from Brisbane Australia and she co documentary run by Tylea Magoo and Jeff Lovejoy The song she co wrote with Cameron McKenzie Let it Go was named by Rolling Stone Australia December 2008 as a key track on the Songs of Applewood album I remember being totally in awe of TAV then AVYC when they performed at Mayne Hall in 1996 and I was singing in St Peter s Chorale What a powerhouse says Mardi She joined the group the next year and spent six more singing and travelling the world with TAV Other highlights for Mardi include travelling to Hungary in 98 for the Bella Bartok festival and to Wales for the Choir of the World competition I have never been as nervous as I was before we went onstage singing Great Southern Spirits She recalls many fun times of silliness and believes touring with the choir was a great training ground for touring with the band Of course meeting her better half Andrew Pennay is probably the fondest memory she has of her time with TAV even if it did take us years to get around to breaking that golden no relationships in the choir rule Mardi is also a journalist has written a university thesis on the workings of Brisbane s music street press and she presents a segment on local Brisbane music on ABC radio By day she works as Director of Communications for the Uniting Church in Queensland and is trying to find time to write so the band can record later this year MAY Alumnus of the Month
