and then that mindset was reflected back to me in the three dimensional reality of my life Sounds familiar I bet I think we re all beginning to see this pattern It s been a very useful pattern for the first 50 000 years of human existence teaching us valuable lessons in a crude hard physical kind of way However as I mentioned today s environment and society no longer allow us the luxury of awaiting every lesson to manifest as a physical reality Our very existence is now demanding that our consciousness become more subtle and more real BEFORE the falling dominoes of cause and effect slam into our physical world There is no escape We have to look deeply into our mirror and begin to truly know who we are because what we are is what our world is becoming at faster and faster speeds Bill Joy the Chief Scientist for Sun Microsystems points out that the speed of human evolution is doubling exponentially every 18 months and only getting faster and faster He also asked if we will blindly rely on technology to get us out of the messes we are creating whether we ll simply stomp on the gas pedal of technological development and hope the answer will pop up And with profound humility and wisdom Bill Joy also asks should we slow down and begin to contemplate the direction we are going Einstein once wrote We can never solve our problems with the same consciousness that created them So here we are at graduation time and our final exam as a species is can we change our consciousness Let s look at the most technologically advanced society in the world and use it as a miner s canary for the world Miner s used canaries to learn if they were in a poisonous mine shaft as the bird would collapse in time for the humans to still escape the bird s fate and survive by choosing another path I do believe that we can mostly all still survive if we begin acting rationally and subtly as soon as possible America in this case the miner s canary wields the most powerful military in the world and the most powerful technology in the world However recently an act of nature leveled a city and will cost us hundreds of billions to repair At the heart of this storm were some butterfly wings beating like mad that had resulted in the Gulf of Mexico s temperature rising by 1 to 2 degrees which had the effect of pouring gasoline on the fire that was Hurricane Katrina Many years ago a young governor of California named Jerry Brown and a President named Jimmy Carter warned that it was time for a shift away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy Brown trumpeted solar wind and new cutting edge energy saving technologies like replacing government face to face meeting and their energy consuming travel with a new technology called tele conferences Young Governor Brown was quickly dubbed Governor Moonbeam by industries who s profits were threatened in the short term by his policies and the public thought that was cute to make fun of someone with a nifty name like that so Brown s vision was submerged in the inanity that is our political media President Carter s visionary tax cuts for home solar energy systems was decimated when he left office And now we are reaping the benefits of decades of spewing CO2 into the atmosphere which is heating our planet in the form of superpowered hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico Initial estimates are approaching 200 billion dollars for the repair of New Orleans alone and this will not even address the lowland eroding levy issues that need to be addressed to stop future floods That project will exceed one hundred billion dollars And this will likely only be a glimmer of the future as the planet continues to be warmed by our energy policy In the words of one climatic scientist on Tim Russert s Sunday Morning talk show recently New Orleans is a vision of the future for every coastal city on the planet as global warming causes ocean levels to rise 3 to 4 feet as ice caps continue to melt at an alarming rate Let me describe another set of butterfly wings beating into a current storm About 50 years ago we the CIA overthrew a stable elected democracy in Iran illegally removing Mohammed Mossedegh and installing a dictator the Shaw of Iran This dictator we installed ruled with an iron fist and imprisoned thousands of Iranians and executed thousands more Virtually no Iranian family was untouched by the criminal acts our CIA had perpetrated at the behest largely of a petroleum industry who was upset because the Iranians had elected a President who wanted his people to have a greater share in the oil being pumped from their homeland The Iranians understandably resented us for many years because of the way our CIA had decimated their democracy and redistributed their oil in the West s favor So much so that eventually the people of Iran staged a revolution and installed the Ayatollah Khomeini as their revolutionary leader who held some Americans hostage because of what had been done to Iran years before in America s name The butterfly s wings we d beaten when we overthrew a Democracy in Iran years before were taking on the force of a powerful gale a gale that shocked Washington who decided that they needed a counter balance to fundamentalist Islam in Iran that had resulted from our overthrowing their democracy earlier So our CIA felt that a young strongman who was very secular would be a good choice to lead neighboring Iraq Therefore our CIA fostered and nurtured the rise of this young man named Saddam Hussein into power in Iraq to counter balance the mess that had become Iraq A large part of Hussein s

coincidentally this is when most crime is committed Our national crime costs are near 500 billion per year while our health care costs are 1 trillion per year Our system s buckling from trying to repair damage that is already done to our bodies our children and our society through backend spending on health problems and prison court enforcement costs How can we deal with the front end before these problems occur What if we went to the root of these stress related problems Many children turn to the drugs and alcohol which is behind most youth crime for stress management Their lives are increasingly stressful in a rapidly changing world and their parents are unavailable battling their own stress issues and the lives that cause them So how could we affect the root problem or stress Government can play a powerful role in affecting this deteriorating situation by affecting the direction of our economic development Tens of millions of Americans could begin working several days a week at home telecommuting via the Internet The technology is there yet companies and employees do not utilize it Government could provide tax incentives to companies to establish telecommuting days for employees Dollars would be saved immediately on traffic costs road wear and emergency care as millions are taken off the hi ways daily Air would immediately become cleaner reducing the alarming increase in asthma problems nationwide But the most important benefit would be a national sigh of relief as parents and children can relax more around the demands of job and family A parent who works 8 hours from home rather than fighting an hour or two of freeway traffic working 8 hours and then fighting the same traffic to get home too late to truly relax brings an entirely different parent home to the children This may help a parent be one who has time to be there to help with the challenges of life our children face This would not only affect telecommuting parents but others who must drive or bus to work will find the roadways much clearer and less polluted leaving them healthier and less stressed when they get home much earlier than before However the other issue affecting all is the one of hours worked Too many Americans are skipping breaks and working way past the 8 hour work day that our ancestors sometimes fought and died for Breaks and 8 hour work days were not fought for because our forefathers and mothers had nothing better to do They were established because this limitation of work to find balance in life is essential to our quality of life Again when most crime is committed between the time school lets out and the time parents get home and we are building and filling prisons faster than ever before in our history it is time to take a deep breath It is time to reevaluate how we are living We must decide whether human beings should be squeezed into

called Tai Chi the perfect exercise While The Wall Street Journal recently did a front page lifestyle story entitled Qigong The Next Yoga A Sweat Free Workout Tiger Woods Secret Weapon So why all the buzz on Tai Chi Qigong Partly because today s high stressed fast moving population is seeking not only health fitness but serenity Serenity may sound superficial in today s busy world but that aspect of Tai Chi may be why it is increasingly utilized in healthcare corporate wellness education and even in prison and drug rehabilitation programs The current hubbub about Tai Chi Qigong may be that we are only now seeing the breaking of a tsunami wave of growing evidence unearthed by western medical research that has been quietly building for the last decade Qigong is a Traditional Chinese medical health practice that directly translated means breathing exercise or energy exercise Tai Chi is a sophisticated form of moving qigong which involves a series of choreographed movements done in a relaxed and flowing way Both have gained increasing attention by western medical researchers in the last decade that has been gaining steam and resulted in more research dollars going toward discovering their benefits The National Institute of Mental Health has increased funding to further research these ancient yet modern health techniques A couple of such study s findings one a ten year study through Harvard Yale and Emory Universities stunned researchers when they discovered that the gentle slow relaxing low impact Tai Chi improved the balance of practitioners profoundly reducing their risk of falling by 47 5 Another found that Tai Chi offered significant cardiovascular benefits roughly the same benefits as moderate impact aerobics Yet another study sited in the Hawaii Medical Journal asserted that Tai Chi increased breathing capacity and relieved back and neck aches in practitioners The pain relief and low impact aspects of Tai Chi was good news for everyone but offered even more hope for those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis RA Tai Chi being a weight bearing exercise offered the potential advantages of stimulating bone growth and strengthening connective tissue The only concern was if they RA sufferers could handle a weight bearing exercise without exacerbation of joint symptoms The American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation reported on a study that found RA sufferers practicing a specially tailored form of Tai Chi suffered no significant exacerbation of joint symptoms This was great news not just for RA sufferers but for all maturing baby boomers looking for a health regimen that is kind to the joints Surprisingly given its gentle nature Tai Chi burns a significant amount of calories as well 280 per hour To understand how significant this is realize that down hill skiing burns about 350 per hour Yet Tai Chi is gentle enough to be done in business clothes in the office without even breaking a sweat Which is one reason Tai Chi and Qigong are increasingly being used in corporate wellness programs However there are perhaps
