less severe My distraught neighbor debated canceling a long planned getaway for two days after Christmas but since we re used to looking after each other s cats and I wasn t going anywhere over Christmas I agreed to supervise the invalid For two days I spent hours with the shut in coaxing pills into him keeping him from harm during the seizures watching him pace restlessly on wobbly legs After a seizure he d look up at me bewildered And I d gather him up and bury my face in his neck and we d sit together for awhile waiting for the next one The morning my neighbor was to return I visited my charge fed him his pill cuddled him for a bit then came home sat down and cried I cried on and off for a couple of days and I still cry sometimes out of the blue just thinking about the bewildered look on his face and the weight of his furry head on my shoulder It s a bit of an overreaction probably It s not even my cat But a couple of days of looking after this cat has made me love him It seems that taking care of things binds us to them And then losing them breaks our hearts I always suspected this which is mostly why I never wanted to be a mother I doubted whether I could cope gracefully with the constant fear of losing a child or of watching her suffer Basically I never wanted to be so enslaved to love Of course I haven t been able to avoid it altogether I love my husband my family and many of my friends with the same intimidating passion I sought to avoid by remaining childless Even the occasional cat can slink under my radar and reduce me to tears Nothing From the Outside This Full Moon Jan 23 2012 2 39 am EST falls in the sign of Cancer the sign of motherhood and of the bonds that tether us to those people and animals and causes that we care for Our love for them represents our tender white underbellies our Achilles Heels the terrible vulnerability that can bring us to our knees There s a passage in the novel Gone With the Wind in which Will Benteen eulogizes Scarlett O Hara s father a once vibrant man who lost his mind after the death of his wife The upshot of the eulogy is that nothing from the outside not even war and sudden poverty could have brought down Mr O Hara but that losing his wife effectively broke his heart mind and spirit And I think that s true of many of us hard economic times can t break us though they increasingly come as a shock No for most of us it s only the passionate attachments we form with others that have the power to bring us down from the inside out But the same attachments

it is powerful It leads you to the healing bliss of joy and it is available to you at all times All you have to do is open your heart and allow the great love and joy of life to manifest within you In times of relative comfort it is not so difficult to walk this path In times of difficulty however it can sometimes feel impossible That is why it is especially important to have a daily practice of some kind to help you anchor yourself in your connection with the Great Spirit This can be as simple as spending time outdoors in nature or lighting a candle or writing down on paper five things for which you are grateful For me I now find my Oneness through prayer and to me prayer has meant everything It was sacred study with the Sisterhood of the Shields that showed me how to find and follow my own path of heart the discovering who I am at my center Sacred study is a process of remembering who you really are When you walk the road of shamanic study and spiritual awareness you allow yourself to grow Long ago I was sitting at the foot of the Annapurna Himal in Nepal on the border of Tibet with my teachers Agnes Whistling Elk Ruby Plenty Chiefs and Ani a Nepalese hill woman who is a member of the Sisterhood of the Shields There was a river coursing down from the high Himalayas rushing down into the rolling plains of Nepal We were having tea and I took a spoonful of sugar and dumped it in the river In an instant the sugar disappeared I burst into tears and looked at my teachers That is what I feel about the dedication of my life to our work to healing the earth and her people I feel that my work is lost in a torrent of ignorance How can anyone ever make a difference As Agnes and Ruby so often do when I take myself too seriously they pulled my consciousness around and made me laugh Then Agnes turned her magnificent eyes to search my face Finally she reached out her hand and covered my palm with hers My daughter she said you have only one responsibility in this lifetime and that is to enlighten yourself You cannot take the responsibility for anyone else And remember you cannot truly heal or help another person you can only provide at the best of times an environment within which others can heal and find themselves That is all you or anyone can do Pray Ruby Plenty Chiefs said Prayer can change the world Your light will affect all of those around you and give them the strength and inspiration to go on and celebrate the magnificence of what they are I dried my tears and held Agnes s hand For me I said finally prayer is the expression of innocence It is our radiant bridge to Great

be May you know deep within your soul that you deserve to have all the good things your heart desires Abraham Hicks explains that there are two key elements to achieve any manifestation desire and deservingness When you seek to attain any goal Abraham suggests that you focus on two questions Why do I want this and Why do I deserve this When you are clear on those two answers all the good that is yours will come to you Here are three true stories from The Book of Deservingness 1 I occasionally visit a lovely retreat center Harbin Hot Springs near Calistoga California where some of the best massages on the planet are generously doled out I used to go to Harbin for three or four days to renew myself before or after a lecture tour During that period I would usually sign up for one massage Soon after I arrived one day I went to the massage register to record my name in the blank for my massage appointment Looking through the schedule of signups I noticed that one fellow had signed up for a massage every day for three days The idea of doing this struck me as a revelation a person could have a massage three days in a row if he wanted I had never even considered this possibility since on some subconscious level I considered so much pleasure to be gluttonous or self indulgent But when I saw that this fellow had dove into the very heart of the pleasure machine I realized that such an act was doable and I really wanted to do it to I gleefully registered for massages three days in a row and went on to love every minute of them I don t remember that fellow s name but if I did I would thank him profusely for serving as a mind stretcher and helping me inscribe myself in The Book of Deservingness 2 I was presenting a seminar on prosperity when a woman raised her hand and posed this dilemma I am a Red Cross fundraiser After a hurricane or flood I swing into action and raise millions of dollars in a short time to aid the victims Meanwhile I m struggling with my own finances and I have hard time paying my rent and other bills each month Why is that I thought about her situation and told her When you know that you deserve to have your rent and bills paid as confidently as you know that the disaster victims deserve to have their needs met you will raise the funds for your own important needs 3 My coaching client Ted has served as a firefighter for 25 years Recently he told me that he is retiring and he would like to move with his wife from New Hampshire to Florida The couple is tired of the cold New Hampshire winters and ready for some sunshine We ve made an arrangement to rent a Florida

of my retreats is called A Woman s Time Out Just hearing that title for some women makes them take a huge sigh of relief and they sign up on the spot not even caring about the details of what we will do they just hear the call of rest and relaxation and come running The main thing I have seen for myself is this feeling that I always need to be in a state of doing I don t know exactly what I am supposed to be doing but there is this pressure to always look like I am busy and accomplishing something I grew up in Hollywood California where the sun was always shining the weather was always warm the people always looked young tan and blond and the whole society seemed like it lived in a perpetual state of doing ness It wasn t until I moved away from that frantic pace to Northern California that I started to unplug and find my own rhythm I am still aware of that urge to be busy but now I have new insights and tools to help me One of the main insights I discovered for myself was learning about the seasons and the natural way of life Nature is an amazing teacher and if we can just follow her ways she can teach us so much When I look at the year calendar it shows us that spring is when things are popping out it s fresh new a time of beginnings Summer is when things are at the hottest most passionate when those projects or seeds we planted are fully coming to fruitation Fall is when we have our harvest when things are starting to come to the end of their cycle leaves are starting to turn different colors and fall off the trees And winter is the time to go inside to stop to look to listen reflect and start planting seeds of what is next in our soul s consciousness Right now as I am writing this it is December I have allowed myself the gift of going inside of stopping of not thinking of business and simply resting Although there are still some business things I have to do I am allowing myself the gift of time to reflect and see how things feel to ask myself the questions of what do I really want to do be and have in this next year December is a very interesting time We are asked to be so outside of ourselves going to parties shopping being with a lot of people I think that is why so many of us get a little irritated or depressed during this time we are going against our basic nature to be quiet and still When I think of the best Christmas gift I can give myself the ultimate self care gift it is this time of being alone just me and my thoughts I don t want to paint

that your conscious self is awakened to what it is you re needing to release So you notice You can no longer get away with just doing it day after day unconsciously Then one day usually while you are looking the other way you will realize you have truly committed to carrying out the needed sacrifice Something in you has truly changed So now a full surrender process has taken hold and if you do not block it it will move you on through You may grieve or feel scared or lost but you have mentally built your determination to persevere Now you will start to implement the change you have been seeking usually one small step at a time And once the process gets this far along you will experience the real purpose of sacrifice You will see the meaning that this old issue had held for you Recognizing and honoring its meaning and sacred purpose in our lives is how we make things holy It s how we truly sacrifice Everything we experience in life has a sacred purpose Though most people never even realize this Many people quite frankly are not on the path of choosing to awaken Therefore life is happening to them rather than seeing that one has conscious chioices When we consciously choose to go through this process of sacrifice miracles and synchronicities tend to occur that both surprise us and please us greatly This is because when we make a real let go it frees up energy that was just sitting there awaiting its chance to activate This has happened in my life several times so I ve learned that it is truly the way spirituality works Here s one example I ll give you to make this statement more understandable Several years ago I inherited the business side of our mental health healing and training program I d always been a teacher and therapist never having focused on knowing how to be a good business manager Consequenty it didn t take me long to drive our national healing program into the ground financially I took us heavily into debt justifying it as being a spiritual work and doing a lot of magical thinking Then one day my CPA told me I had to declare bankruptcy After much anguish and fearful resistance I finally went through a process of a real honest to goodness let go I said goodbye to the work we d been doing and simply stopped thinking there was some way to save it I set up a meeting with my attorney our CPA and business manager to discuss this issue My son a business consultant for a large business firm in Houston called to ask what was going on and said he wanted to come to the meeting This was a total surprise as he d led his own life for years and traveled so much he hardly had any spare time So he came and soberly we convened

t mean those relationships are predetermined We may have certain karmic predispositions to feel close to or to have friction with certain people Nevertheless these relationships may not continue along those same lines If we are kind to those who speak ill of us and try to communicate effectively with them the re lationships will change We ll also create positive karma which will bring happiness in the future We are not karmically bound to others Nor are there soul mates special people who are the one and only one for us Since we ve had infinite past lives we ve had contact with every being sometime before Also our relationship with any particular person constantly changes Nonetheless past karmic connections can influence our present relationships For example if someone has been our spiritual mentor in a past life we may be drawn to that person this lifetime and his or her teaching the Dharma may have a very strong effect on our minds Can understanding karma help us to understand the events in our lives better Yes it can The happiness we experience comes from our previously created positive actions Understanding this encourages us to act constructively and not sit back passively when opportunities to be kind appear When we experience some difficulties in life we should reflect on the type of action we must have done that created the cause for this result This will encourage us to be more aware of what we think say and do Studying the Buddha s teachings enables us to learn more about specific actions and their results Then we can change our behavior and plant more seeds in our mindstreams to experience desirable results A text called The Wheel of Sharp Weapons is particularly good in explaining the effects produced by certain actions and the way to change our attitudes and actions to create the cause of happiness Can people be reborn as animals and animals as people How is that karmically possible Yes Based on our actions our minds are attracted toward certain types of rebirth when we die It may seem difficult to imagine that a human being could be reborn as an animal but if we consider the fact that some people act worse than animals it doesn t seem so far fetched For example animals kill only when they are threatened or hungry while some human beings kill for sport fame or power If someone s mind habitually goes in a certain direction it makes sense that his or her body could correspond to that mental state in a future life Similarly animals can be reborn as humans Although it s difficult for most animals to do many positive actions it s hard to teach a dog to meditate or to offer community service it is possible For this reason Tibetans take their animals when they circumambulate holy monuments in order to put good imprints on the animals minds Many people enjoy saying their prayers or mantras
