its frequency As you got older telephone charges came down considerably and people became freer at using the telephone to bridge distance and the whole concept of a long distance call lost much of its special aura Distance to that extent became disregarded Then came the Internet less than 20 years ago and in a short time it revolutionized the concept of staying in touch By e mail you could call when you wished and it didn t matter if the other person could talk then it was as if he or she could This aspect of e mail vastly freed communication because you no longer had to wonder if it was convenient for the recipient to talk When you had the impulse you e mailed When they did they e mailed back And the result was that instead of waiting by your mailbox or by your telephone you were plugged in more or less permanently if you wished to be The only delay was in the response time from the other end of the communication This is a huge and undigested change in a very short time of larger import than the one way communication of television or radio before it greater because the participant in e mail is participant not recipient FD Connectivity TGU It has become customary already to compile lists of similar minded friends and send group e mails thus linking yourselves into a temporary but repetitively active community The isolation that was taken for granted as a fact of life only a generation ago is gone except among those who by choice or circumstance are not connected by e mail or other electronic linkage You laugh at texting but this is because you are a man from another age It is not depth of thought but the feeling of moment to moment connectivity that is fostered thereby If you think that is without value think of the powerful centrifugal force it counterbalances FD Depth of thought then TGU Well you can see that speed and connectivity militate against depth and continuity of thought You can t hop around continually and still hatch eggs This must be looked at as a condition that is a sort of opportunity cost involved with greater speed and connectivity It shouldn t be overlooked FD Connection in time TGU That s you That s anyone whose present is a rich compost of many remembered pasts Not speaking here of personal life but of cultural and personal historical life The world of American history lives within you or equally you live within it You have internalized parts of the construct that is history because you read of it when so moved Thus you look at Harry Truman s memoirs or Hemingway Goes To War or any of the books some favorites resorted to time and again and you thereby connect yourself to an array You become in effect a specialized tool for the greater mind as does everyone who acquires specialized

had risen up the corporate ladder to positions with influence and broad responsibility I admired these women and hoped that I would follow in their footsteps to someday obtain my own impressive title and large staff Being ambitious I always dreamed of running things being in charge of creating wonderful products and ideas I had been socialized to think this way by my parents college professors and co workers since my very first job out of college I dutifully accepted and completed assignments until my work days had stretched to more than 15 hours a day and part of my weekends I didn t have time to talk to my friends relax with my husband or pursue any personal interests such as exercising or writing I thought that if I just did as I was asked my recognition would come and I would be given my own staff to help with the overwhelming workload However the more work that I completed the more work I was assigned I felt pressured and scared that I would be viewed as a failure if I couldn t keep up with what was being asked of me Even though both of these women had spouses they had allowed their career hunger to make them become married to their jobs One manager had a day and night time nanny and basically never saw here children and husband The other placed career advancement above building a family and waited too late to have children which she desperately wanted I thought it strange that they didn t want to spend more time at home but slowly I was letting them push me into the same situation With a complaining husband and persistent insomnia I finally realized that the situation was not right for me The stress to constantly complete assignments under unreasonable deadlines was causing me to have memory loss and a high level of anxiety Even when I was in a social situation or relaxing at home my mind was always circling around the next assignment that I had due My husband became distant and eventually left me The devastation of the separation and eventual divorce caused me to realize that I had to draw boundaries with authority figures to protect the balance in my life They kept right on with their deadlines and goals while I suffered through the guilt and embarrassment of my failed marriage After consulting with a workaholic expert I realized that people in authority positions who are overly driven may be trying to compensate for their personal insecurities by overwork causing you to become one of the casualties When the damage is done to your life I learned these very same people will not take responsibility for the fallout from broken marriages or troubled children They will just keep chasing the next career goal and you will be left to reconstruct the tatters of your life alone What this situation taught me is that you have to be strong enough confident

just love us Who can say that of even the closest human family member Animals help us get in touch with our natural roots Especially in highly civilized societies like ours people are very divorced from the kind of environment human beings evolved in When this separation goes on over extended periods of time deleterious effects occur We re usually unaware of these effects especially if we ve spent all our lives in our artificial environment However these ill effects still work on us aware or not They lead to various individual imbalances which over time can cause physical mental emotional and or spiritual ills On a bigger scale they lead to a destruction of the very planet on whom we rely for existence since it is viewed as something to exploit rather than something to treasure and revere Animals are not so far removed from nature and they help us get closer to that for which we often unknowingly hunger Our furry feathered and scaley companions teach us invaluable lessons about living in the moment We humans spend a great deal of time eitherdwelling in the past or worrying about the future Animals naturally do something which great spiritual teachers are always after their human students to do they live in the here and now We would do well to emulate them Animals also act as barometers of what is going on in our lives for they often are the first to show signs of tension in a household becoming emotionally upset or physically ill with the stress It is a wise human who picks up the clues their furry feathered or scaley friends are exhibiting before things get too far out of hand I m still learning this lesson If my animals are acting up my first thought is What the heck is wrong with them It usually takes me a while and sometimes I never reach thatpoint to turn around and look at what s going on with me Animals often make us laugh which we greatly need in our frenetic driven lives They give us someone to love and care for They help our hearts growand expand rather than contract and harden In the last couple of decades scientists have begun to substantiate what those of us who love animals have known all along about the good which animals bring into our lives The first studies showed that animals were a major factor in helping humans survive a serious heart attack and that people s blood pressure goes down when stroking their animals Because of the publicity which these and other studies brought about many animal assisted therapy programs came into existence ranging from animals visiting hospital patients or nursing home residents to dogs trained to help their deaf human companions to horseback riding for thosephysically challenged Now we re finding that there are dogs able to detect cancer or predict epileptic seizures or heart attacks Finally there are the programs in which prison inmates train

Marilyn B Chicago Illinois Dear Marilyn I sense your frustration and you are certainly not alone One of the most important components of any successful weight loss program is the delicate issue of hormone balancing usually missing or rarely discussed in any popular diet book If those hormones are not balanced then you will not lose weight or you might lose weight initially and then weight loss will stop you ll plateau Because of working in allergy clinics with thousands of patients over the years I have developed an intuitive sense about people and their weight issues or health problems When I look into a physical body I see the body in terms of the systems that are out of balance One of the most common imbalanced systems is the endocrine system Overweight people almost always have hormone imbalances All too often people can blame themselves their emotional issues and past experiences when in my opinion much of their mental anguish can stem from endocrine imbalances which when identified can be corrected In terms of weight gain hormone imbalances can contribute to overeating and that never satisfied feeling In my own life as a menopausal woman I know that my emotional well being and maintaining my ideal weight has been greatly enhanced by the addition of bio identical hormone balancing Most people think that their hormones are located in their pelvis but did you know that the master endocrine glands are actually located in the head For instance the hypothalamus is an important endocrine gland that governs appetite emotion memory and hormone balance The pineal gland responds to light and endocrine balance and the pituitary gland relates to growth The thyroid gland located in the base of the neck regulates mood temperature and weight control as well as effecting elimination Many people suffer from what is known as sub clinical low thyroid The thyroid gland at the base of the neck is involved in maintaining body weight balance body temperature energy and well being It is very often out of balance Some doctors say that low thyroid is in epidemic proportions in this country A medical test may not always detect a low thyroid People with low thyroid often have difficulty losing weight For example I believe that this has been the case over the years in popular TV personality Oprah Winfrey s weight loss challenges just like many of her African American counterparts The use of certain herbs botanicals glandular materials or synthetic thyroid medication will help this important gland to function correctly For many people it is as if the lights go on and the after burners for energy and weight loss go up after the thyroid is balanced Insulin is another important hormone Insulin secreted by the pancreas is responsible for blood sugar regulation Lowering carbohydrates can help balance insulin levels thus contributing to improved hormone function Cholesterol is another important component in the hormone balance equation Many people with the best of intentions greatly reduce fats

for the more common infections and save them to use on occasion for life threatening infections Hospitals are now issuing statements in their membership newsletters about how taking antibiotics can increase your chance of later being infected with resistant bacteria that antibiotics cannot kill Pharmaceutical antibiotics go into the body and kill not only the pathogenic bacteria that may be making you sick but it also kills the hundreds of beneficial bacteria that help you do many things such as digest and assimilate your foods When you kill your beneficial bacteria with antibiotics you become more susceptible to future illness Herbs offer us a solution Let s use herbs for viral and less serious infections and save the anti biotics for the more serious infections so that we will actually have some antibiotics that can work against the life threatening infections Herbs that have antibiotic activities only kill pathogenic bacteria and do not harm your beneficial bacteria Many herbs help with viral infections as well as with bacterial infections whereas pharmaceutical antibiotics will not help treat a viral infection that causes a cold or flu One of my favorite anti biotic herbs is Sage Salvia officinalis It is an herb that most people have in their herb and spice rack and it is very easy to grow There are many beautiful Salvias sages grown for their colorful flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds These salvias are not your medicinal varieties of Salvia When purchasing Salvia to be used for medicinal purposes make sure that it is Salvia officinalis yes good old turkey stuffing garden Sage Sage has been cultivated for centuries in Europe for its medicinal antibiotic properties Sage is especially good for upper respiratory and throat infections You can drink three cups of strong tea a day for a week or do a steam inhalation Sage Tea Steam Four tablespoons dried Sage One quart of water Put herbs into pot of water and bring to a boil with a lid on the pot Turn off the heat and let herbs steep for 15 minutes Reheat the tea until it is hot Take off the lid and place a towel over your head and breathe in the steam from the tea Make sure the steam is a temperature that is comfortable for your facial skin Do this for ten minutes and rest Another highly effective antibiotic herb that many of us take for granted is Garlic Garlic has been used medicinally for thousands of years and clinical studies have shown garlic to be active against strains of bacteria that are now antibiotic resistant Garlic is good for fighting off all kinds of infections and even kills fungus and parasites Fresh Garlic works the best Add some freshly crushed Garlic to any of your meals and mix it into soups Flu away 2 medium cloves of freshly crushed garlic 1 cup of very warm water 1 teaspoon of honey 1 teaspoon of lemon juice Stir and drink Another one of my

foods and increased activity you would feel deprived denied and unhappy What if that assumption were false I have worked with thousands of people all over the country to help them lose weight with Gastric Bypass Hypnosis Surgery private hypnosis weight loss sessions hospital based seminars and my at home weight loss system I can t tell you how many times people who have lost even over 100 lbs told me the process was easily and effortless How is this possible Losing weight is easy only when you change your thinking about yourself and food When your thoughts about food and yourself change your behavior naturally changes and it doesn t have to be a struggle Success is only possible when you follow certain rules The difference is that once your subconscious thinking shifts following the rules you already know consciously will work becomes second nature The reason why some people describe their experience with self hypnosis and weight loss as a miracle is because there is seemingly no effort when it comes to following the rules However you can be assured that they are only losing weight not because any miracle has occurred but because they are eating less and exercising more The only way I have found for rules to be effective is when you decide on them yourself If they come from outside of you most likely you will want to rebel against them I encourage you to make rules for yourself that fit for you your lifestyle and your health condition Here are some basic rules that work for people who live consistently at a healthy weight that you may want to adapt or make your own 1 Eat only when you are physically hungry Your body is a holy temple not a garbage pail Think of putting food in your body the way you put gasoline in your car Food has a purpose and that is to give you energy Never overstuff yourself or eat when you are not physically hungry How do you know when you are hungry Some people hear their stomach growling but many others experience symptoms such as irritability weakness dizziness feeling spacey and shaky or having an inability to focus or concentrate Honor your body s wisdom and listen to the way it is communicating with you Never eat for emotional reasons Let yourself feel your emotions fully but don t eat to numb them Write them out talk to a trusted friend or use music art movement or gardening to calm yourself but never eat because you are bored lonely tired angry worried sad or afraid 2 Eat the foods that nourish you but that you enjoy in a balanced way Food is meant to nourish and sustain you However that doesn t mean that the food you eat should taste bad On the contrary food is one of the pleasures in life The good news is your taste for food can change Julie and her Mother Carrie used
