  • Become a Freelance Photographer
taking a great photo Flashes can be as expensive as extra lenses but the extra lighting equipment could make the world of difference to your shots particularly if you take a lot of portrait shots Tripod A tripod will be one of the most affordable and most crucial optional extras Although you can take shots without a tripod you ll find that the tripod will help steady your camera when you re taking lots of shots or if you want to take technical shots Tripods can be used with landscape and portrait photography A tripod is one of the few items can that help a customer distinguish between an amateur and a professional freelance photographer For example if a customer saw you with a standard camera taking shots they may just assume you re a spectator after a few pics If they see you poised with your camera and tripod they may be tempted to think you re working on a photography project A customer will be more likely to start a conversation with you about what you are doing just because a tripod adds to your presence as a professional photographer A tripod can greatly improve your shots and can help to drive business in these conditions Printer A printer is not necessary in the early days as you can take your shots to a photography store and have your digital images printed there This will help to improve the professional look and feel of your photos but can prove quite expensive and time consuming If you do invest in a printer make sure it s a high quality one You will also need to consider choosing a high quality paper and you will need to get different finishes on the paper such as gloss matt soft finish and more Use an ink refill service as this is often more cost effective and certainly more environmentally friendly than simply replacing the empty cartridges with new ones You will also need a good guillotine to create a clean sharp trim to your prints It s not quite as easy as just plugging in your home printer and printing to your heart s content so be sure to start by using an affordable professional photo store for your first prints Photo Editing Software Photo editing software can make a big difference to your photos Some software like Adobe s Photoshop can be very expensive however the tools on this particular program are extensive Other programs such as JSAC Coral Paint Shop and Roxio are more affordable but are not as in depth as Adobe s editing tools With some basic studying online and practice in the software you ll soon find ways of vastly improving your shots in just a few short mouse clicks The software will allow you to improve color add items remove details you don t like and a lot more The software is well worth the investment if you can afford it Digital Graphic Pad Most digital graphic pads are reasonably priced considering the features that they add to your computer however these can only be used with a photo editing program The pads allow you to work with far more detail as the pen offers greater precision than the mouse If you re an artist by nature then you should definitely consider buying the editing software and graphic pad and including digital art in your repertoire of provided services Photography Courses Clubs You may be a natural snapper but a good photography course can teach you a broad range of skills You will find private courses are usually quite expensive so check with your local educational facilities to see what photography courses they offer before paying a small fortune for what could be very poor tuition Local photography clubs are a great way of getting to know your competitors as well as getting your own handiwork out in to the community By getting to know the people you share your business with you can start to develop a network of professional people including other photographers models and prospects Portfolio You won t have a portfolio to begin with but you must ask every client that you serve whether or not they are happy for you to use the shots in the portfolio This will allow you to develop your portfolio quite quickly You will definitely need a hard copy version but you must consider getting a website at some stage if you intend to make freelance photography your full time career choice Once your website is live create a digital replica of your portfolio Website More and more people are turning to the internet to search for affordable services in their local area as well as shopping for products A strong web presence can help a freelancer generate a lot of interest and business without lifting a finger Make sure that your website is easy to update with your latest images offers and services Business Cards Look online for business card services and make sure that as soon as you have them printed you always have them to hand You d be surprised at just how much old means of generating business such as business cards and word of mouth can still support a business even in the age of modern technology and fancy advertising Getting Started as a Freelance Photographer Before I can demonstrate how you can get started as a freelance photographer I think it s best to explain how I started my own business as a freelance photographer A few years ago I decided that sitting at a desk all day was no fun I have always enjoyed taking photographs and I liked the idea of working for myself I started promoting my services locally and I approached a few national companies however I quickly found out that the field was incredibly competitive with amateur and professional photographers throwing themselves at any and all photography work I realized that in order to be successful I had to start thinking outside of the box I realized that one of two things needed to happen either I had to find a niche and make it my own or I needed to identify a niche that had otherwise gone unnoticed and really throw myself into making myself synonymous in this niche I now earn a comfortable salary of 1000 1500 a week working between 20 25 hours per week I have the privilege of travelling to different areas and using my talents to earn my living I simply can t call it a job it s too fun to be considered work However profit is made and a considerable profit at that As a freelancer I could think of no better way of helping others achieve this satisfying stability that can be achieved by freelancing than to once again think outside the box and my usual talents and to produce this eBook This eBook will teach you how to make an earning from photography as a free thinking freelancer My methods can be applied to anyone anywhere It is a guide meant to help determined individuals to make a living from their own efforts and talents The risk for some may be overwhelming but the reward when you get your freelancing career right is worth far more than just money I enjoy a life where I have time for my family time to pursue my interests time to increase my skills and capabilities as a working professional and I m not continuously worrying about money like many hard working individuals who are employed rather than self employed The economy in recent years has proven that even the biggest of businesses can fall and when they do there is very little mercy for the people who work the hardest Being a freelancer is far more cost effective in both profits and expenditures During these difficult years think outside the box like I did Break free of the chain and freelance With the tools the focus and the drive it s time to get started as a freelancer To begin we need to identify your unique niche This eBook will give you inspiration and information on niche markets where freelance photographers like you and me can make a comfortable living Knowing a Niche Market When You See One Photography is visual documentation and you d be surprised just how many people want different visual documents for different purposes When you think about images in this context as documents and information you can start to see how and when people would want to access your services With this in mind you can start to develop a marketing strategy that will generate short and long term business You may think trying to target a relatively small niche could be quite dangerous but in the world of freelance photography it s quite the opposite By starting off in a niche that has been left untouched by others you can begin to establish your specialist career in photography By becoming renowned for being good in particular field of photography you will soon have requests about other fields From there you can expand into other niches if you so choose to do so Many freelancers decide against it as they enjoy enough success form their own niche Some fields of photography will offer short term one off contracts These can be handy for instant payments on fast jobs Other clients will be looking for a long term hire contract with a freelancer allowing you to generate residual income and higher payouts You will need to establish a healthy mix of both short and long term contracts as a freelancer to keep your salary looking healthy My niches have included local fishing contests and church events for short term contracts that have proven to be extremely lucrative I will now provide a number of short term local gigs and contracts that you can look into to help generate a healthy wage packet each week Remember this is not a definitive list Grab a paper a pen before reading the next chapter so that you can write down any ideas that you get and use your notes for research later My niches may not be your niches but my niches may inspire you to find and create your own freelancing career The most important thing as a freelancer is not to dismiss any idea no matter how strange until it has been considered and researched further Sometimes the blindingly obvious or the outright bizarre can be the perfect niche and market that has yet to be tapped The perfect opportunity for you as a freelancer is just waiting to be explored Local Gigs and Short Term Contracts Local gigs require a little spontaneity some Dutch courage and a bit of boldness It s about getting yourself out there and seizing the moment while taking some great snaps You will need to be able to multitask You will generally deal with quite a few customers and prospects in one day You will need to be able to take accurate contact details as well as take care of cash handling and still take great photos with all of these interruptions A clever marketing technique to use with prospects at live gigs is to take one or two shots of the prospect trying to include as much detail and background as possible Take the prospects email address and then email the prospect the cleaned up sample shots from that event Include in the email a polite greeting reminding them of who you are how you met and why you are contacting them Include your full contact details as well as information about your pricing structure A popular email campaign I have found is to offer to produce a CD of professional family photos for x amount of dollars I base my price packages on the number of images that will be included on a CD DVD I have a 70 return on this particular email campaign Example Pricing Scenario Email Campaigns 5 x local gigs in one week period and 5 email prospects per gig 25 prospects Each prospect emailed Family CD Offer at 20 for 20 images 500 potential 70 return and purchase offer 17 5 clients respond avg 340 approx per week Essentially this technique allows me to earn more money from new prospects and clients while I m working on another project without it interfering with the main project Very little work at the time but these short term contracts have helped me meet clients that have then offered long term contracts associated with their own business and associates The more you talk to clients the more they will think about you whenever they encounter a situation that requires the need of a professional photographer That s 340 per week and that s only from the prospects you meet at local gigs so that s not taking into account the earnings that could be made actually at these gigs Being a freelancer is all about making the most of every opportunity this includes your time and your money Don t be afraid to try new things and to seek new avenues You d be very surprised at where your ingenuity could take you With this in mind we need to now consider what kind of local events you can be attending to generate this kind of interest in your business Each event will be explained allowing you to see how you can create new opportunities Each event will have a summary explaining the pricing structure the frequency of events attended the time these events took up and the return made from each particular event type Sporting Events Every local community has a collection of sporting facilities and teams From bar games to track games games in a pool games on a lake you name it and there is going to be a sporting event for it Children s games and sporting events can also generate a lot of interest From little Jimmy s first school sports day to his big day in the final and crucial sports match at high school parents everywhere love to have these events documented well as do the facilities that provide them and the sponsors that invest in the facilities Start by searching the internet and local newspapers for local sporting events in your community Create a diary based around these events Your mobility will play a big part in the number of events you can get to each day however don t think that quantity will guarantee you a great income If you re rushing all of the time to get from A to B in one single day you won t really have time to work the crowds at any venue First establish the frequency and location of local sporting events Focus on the ones that you feel will be most profitable or the ones that you think will make for great photos Then based on your refined list decide how many of the events you think you can realistically attend There s two ways you can approach the event and your target market If you re feeling gutsy you can hit the crowd directly Start by targeting the parents who either look like they have forgotten their cameras or the ones that are using their phone to record or photograph the event By working the crowd directly and taking pictures of the parents sat with family in the crowd other people will begin to enquire about your services At some events you may be better served with a simple sign one that reads Professional Photos of the game 20 a set Personal requests available This will allow you to deal with the crowd as they come to you By taking orders for specific shots of the athletes or orders for family shots with trophies or whatever is requested you will help to generate more interest and revenue Remember you re doing them a favor by providing a service that gives them documentation they can treasure forever alongside their memories Decide on a per shot fee for special requests in advance and offer clients this extra option for extra income and profit Summary of Sports Events Price 20 for 20 shots 2 per shot for special requests Frequency 2 3 events per week Time 4 6 hours per week Return Between 100 200 per week Holiday and Seasonal Photos For many freelance photographers holiday photos are only really open to those who live near a tourist destination or for those who either have access to or own local properties local to nearby tourist hotspots However the other holidays can be used to generate extra income Different countries celebrate different holidays so again this is dependent on your location but think about the different holidays you could take family photos of Christmas Thanksgiving New Years Eve Halloween National days Such as St Days in the UK Independence Day in the US etc Advertising is key to this particular niche Advertising your services for these holiday periods is relatively easy Utilize marketing strategies both online and offline to maximize your business potential Online I used free sources of advertising such as my Facebook page and Twitter posts I also used Craigslist and other free web spots to leave information about my services A simple post online like the following can generate a lot of interest Freelance Photographer For Hire For Fantastic Family Holiday Pictures Capture your holiday forever with affordable and professional photos Name your location and I will come to you to take the pics to make your holiday perfect Full Photo Set 1 HOUR 30 Digital and Printed Versions provided Duplicate copies charged at 15 each Offline I advertised on school college and university bulletin boards I visited local community centers and posted flyers there as well as visiting the mall to hand out flyers there Church bulletin

  • A Guide To Setting Up Your Own Photography Studio
well as the expectations you have from your property Portraiture photographers should look for a minimum room size of 12 x 16 feet Bigger is obviously better as you will need to think of the space that lights backgrounds and other items will take up A room with a length of more than 20 feet is ideal as long as the room is not dominated by large windows Natural light may seem like a good idea but it means that you re constantly changing your lighting set up to work with the natural light provided Easy access both inside and out is also important You will be bringing in large items all of the time and moving them around often It s important you can do this without it always feeling like a tight squeeze If you intend to generate a lot of foot traffic or if you decide you want to have an office or meeting area then you will need to be sure that the property can meet all of your needs Semi permanent office walls can be quite expensive but can quickly divide a large open plan room into the exact spaces that you desire I opted for a ground floor studio that provided separate office space attached to the studio There is enough space for me to run my separate internet business without it interfering with my office or studio My studio is a comfortable size of 20 x 14 feet with additional office space of 14 x 8 feet I share the premises with another business owner We share kitchen and bathroom facilities and this helps me to reduce the costs of the studio By sharing I was able to afford a bigger space and space was really important to me Luckily the location of my commercial studio is ideal too There is ample sign space on the property allowing me to advertise my services clearly to the public The store is opposite a busy shopping centre which has great public travel connections Bus services are located at the centre and the train station is only a five minute walk There is ample parking for my clients provided nearby because of the shopping centre Design and Layout You will find very few properties are suitable for immediate set up More often than not the property will require some alterations in order to make it suitable as a working studio Keep colors neutral however don t be afraid to use your wall color to enhance your work if you intend to display your work in the studio You d be surprised how well matt black can act as a beautiful canvas to hand your artwork on as well as the usual whitewash for wall canvas Make sure the windows can easily be blacked out The most cost effective way of doing this is to use blackout roller blinds which can be purchased fairly cheaply from eBay and other ecommerce stores They may not be incredibly attractive but they do the job well In the long term if your studio proves to be successful you can always invest in alternatives to blackout blinds You ll want your studio to be cool Too warm or too cold and your clients may not make the best of models Spend some time in your new property before opening to see how the natural temperature of the room makes you feel If you think the studio is too cold consider carpeting the studio if it isn t already Consider making any required electrical adaptations in your studio that may be required before opening Storage Space As well a studio space you will need to ensure that your property has suitable storage space If no storage units are built into the property then you will need to ensure that there is space to install storage units such as cupboards and shelves You will also need room to store any props lighting stands and equipment and other items In Parts 3 and 4 we will look at the equipment your new commercial studio will require When you have decided what equipment you would like to equip your studio with you can better think about your storage space requirements Part 3 Getting the Right Light for Your Photographic Studio There are a number of lighting techniques that you can use to create the perfect set up in your studio Whether you decide to go for the firm favorite of the photographic industry with strobe lighting or you decide to use an alternative lighting solution it is important that you spend time considering your lighting set up Natural light may be the preferred lighting method for some photographers but this can be extremely difficult to manage indoors Skylights offer the option of diffusing natural light but the general rule of thumb is to use blackout bland or other means to diminish natural light during shoots Studio Strobe Lighting This is the traditional tried and tested favorite of most professional photography studios You will need a minimum of two dedicate strobe units twinned with a number of light modifiers such as snoots softboxes barndoors and more Remember to budget for the strobe light units and the mentioned accessories to get the best light for your studio The power for these will vary depending on the size of the studio They are however almost always more powerful than the flash guns used by mobile photographers such as flashguns used by wedding photographers The majority will be mains powered although battery powered strobe lighting kits are available however they are somewhat more expensive than the main variety Unlike speedlights strobe lights usually dump any unused power at each activation making recycle time as big as a consideration as power usage Disregard units lower than 200w as these will prove futile in your photography sessions It is better to mix up your units and go for 1 200w 2 300w and 1 500w or something similar to give you

language all their own and that language is numerical in design The Domain Name System or DNS was the brainchild of Dr Paul Mockapetris The original Internet Standards laid out by the Internet Engineering Task Force or IETF contain the DNS The IETF was founded in 1986 with its primary goal being to make the Internet work better by producing high quality relevant technical documents that influence the way people design use and manage the Internet So how does the DNS work The DNS serves as a translator between humans and computers The alphabetical address entered by a user is translated into numeric code and is submitted to servers online The servers than return the numeric IP address to the page requested by the user and the content is displayed on your monitor Thanks to the speed and efficiency of today s computers and Internet providers and the efficient design of the DNS the information you request can often be placed on your monitor in less than a second The Process of Buying Selling and Using Domains The sale of domain names occurs daily throughout the entire world These bits of information are perhaps the most recognizable part of Internet Protocol and their use has opened up a global marketplace As the owner of a domain name a user may perform several tasks with that piece of Internet property He can purchase hosting from a provider like GoDaddy or HostGator and place a website on the domain A user may also do whats called storing or parking the domain name This will normally point the DNS servers to a Coming Soon page or to a website they have already associated with a separate domain name Parking is a very important feature for users who want to own that particular domain name or who wish to retain the intellectual rights to a name while linking it with a better known or more established brand name He may also sell the domain name or transfer ownership to a new party Purchasing and selling domain names is normally done either through your hosting provider or through a service specializing in the sale of domain names These companies are called domain registrars and are under the watch of the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers or ICANN This body helps regulate the assignment of domain names at the TDL level When you incorporate the use of a domain registrar the fee you pay will provide you with a guarantee that your domain name has not been registered by someone else If your desired name is unavailable then a domain registrar will normally provide a list of possible alternatives The registrar will also get your domain registered with ICANN and will list you as the owner of your site using Extensible Provisioning Protocol or EPP This is not only a good way to maintain domain assignments and prevent theft of domain names A registrar does the same thing for hosting providers as the ICANN

  • What Are DIY Website Builders And How Do They Work?
out customer support options as not all website builders customer service is equal Using a DIY website builder may mean you have to select the program that meets the largest number of your needs You may not find one that will have everything you want but you can choose which features you can do without However be sure the features you opt to let go of are not items that will inhibit your site s functionality Also if you re designing an e commerce site be sure the program you choose offers customer support and applications that work well with e commerce For instance you will need a widget that allows you to accept payment from customers as well as the ability to catalog products and services in an easy to search catalog Best Design Squarespace and Wix win the prize in this category Simplest Operation Weebly and Wix are both simple to use and make it easy to customize your site Best For e Commerce Squarespace and Weebly both offer good options for e commerce sites 24 7 Customer Support Squarespace offers 24 hour customer support that helps when a new user runs into a wall designing their site While there really isn t a best overall DIY website builder you can see for yourself that each of these has its own strong points Selecting the right one for you will require a little bit of time and research on your part to determine what features and options you need Once you have selected which website builder you want to use you can begin construction of your site This means that in a very short time you can have a fully operational website launched and ready to for new clients to visit Be sure you implement a user friendly design and make the site easy to navigate and highly functional Test every page and every application on the site before you submit the site to search engines for their spiders to crawl You don t want potential clients to visit your site and then leave because it doesn t work correctly What Is The Downside To WYSIWYG Web Software WYSIWYG sites are not nearly as sophisticated in design as a custom site that is coded by a professional webmaster These sites often lack in SEO and design features which means they may not rank as well in search results This can be remedied with proper research and implementation of keywords in the text and image captions However keyword research and proper implementation of the keywords can be a tedious task for those who have never taken it on before Web designers are quick to point out the flaws with DIY website builders but not so ready to admit to the upside of using them The reason for this is that if everyone built their own sites web designers who have been a staple to the Internet business for years would be completely out of work They defend their trade

  • What Is Shared Hosting
benefits packages and extra resources if you re willing to pay the premium With the addition of extra services and features to your shared hosting plan your site will occupy more resources on the server and will leave fewer resources for your fellow server space renters If they opt to do that then the same will apply to your site This is not always apparent on smaller sites but once you get into the realm of operating a larger server that has thousands of visits per day on a shared server there are several effects that occur Lengthier Load Times Just like sharing anything else in life sharing space on a shared hosting server requires each user to be conscientious of others The more storage space and bandwidth that you use the less there will be for your fellow renters If you use more than what is reasonable then your site will affect all the others on the shared hosting server which can lead to lengthier load times and difficulties in functioning for your fellow renters Website s Performance Issues Shared servers are set up to house a plethora of sites thousands and to share resources on an approximately uniform basis Because of this it is possible that your site may be denied the resources it needs to load expeditiously and perform efficiently if your site grows too large Consequently your sales and site visits can be affected negatively because it might become problematic for your customers to use and navigate your site With these problems customers might not want to come back Upgrade to the Necessary Level If your site grows out of the capacities that a shared hosting server is able to provide then that server might require that you upgrade your services This can happen through the size of your site or through the amount of site visits by customers or users Essentially what this means is that you need to monitor the set up of your site and the traffic it attracts so that you can upgrade to the necessary levels This will ensure that your site operates at its prime level If you are not looking to do any over the top customization or design of your website or if you do not have a site that is extensively popular then shared hosting is the overall best and most logical option for you Moreover it is a great way to gain some experience working with a certain host without actually having to commit to any long term contract There is however one potential downside the majority of hosts working in the shared hosting industry establish specific caps on resources for their accounts and they maintain these caps through clauses in their service agreements If these caps are violated then they will either strictly curb your service or they will move your account onto a significantly more costly and powerful plan If you are interested in a more comprehensive plan including more hardware and software options
