being absorbed into the new digital world order They are also becoming easier targets to mug 0 Christopher link Report Post Posted 1 18 2016 10 15 20 PM 12 dewster From Northern NJ USA Joined 2 17 2012 threads posts The original Electro Theremin sounded sweet because the vacuum tube oscillator generated even harmonics If the sound source was a lab grade sine wave generator you would have a very hard time hearing any harmonics other than the fundamental of course link Report Post Posted 1 19 2016 1 14 35 PM 13 Spudwave From Where ever spuds are sold Joined 1 15 2016 threads posts I have a lot of reading ahead of me I thought I knew how theremins work I ve realized that I ve only rudimentary knowledge link Report Post Posted 1 20 2016 1 02 46 PM 14 coalport From Canada Joined 8 1 2008 threads posts The tragedy of the theremin is that following the initial run of RCA s and the demise of the vacuum tube theremins have been built by technical people who have consistently refused to allow themselves to be guided by musicians As a result what we are seeing today is the devolution of the instrument as it increasingly becomes a toy rather than the serious musical instrument that Leon Theremin envisioned in the 1930 s The most obvious example of this is the enormous popularity of the Russian doll matryomin which is incapable of expression and when played by large groups has all the musical appeal of a swarm of killer bees Some of the responsibility for this has to do with the fact that the theremin is the most difficult instrument ever devised requiring not only an investment of thousands of hours in order to learn it but a set of natural abilities one has to be born with muscle memory hand ear coordination a keen sense of pitch etc in order to take on the challenge in the first place Unfortunately these are faculties with which everybody seems to believe they are endowed Even if you are prepared to take the plunge and you have all the prerequisites to succeed what have you got when you finally reach your goal No one has ever been able to make a living from playing the theremin and as the instrument becomes increasingly well known the novelty factor ain t so novel anymore The rewards of playing the theremin are entirely personal and anyone who wants to play professionally is going to have to find a way to subsidize their career Theremin builders on the other hand must face the reality of the fact that the market for the instrument consists primarily of people whose decision on what to buy will be guided by cost link Report Post Posted 1 21 2016 1 42 51 PM 15 Spudwave From Where ever spuds are sold Joined 1 15 2016 threads posts I have been severly disappointed by all martyonim performances

  • Theremin World - Topic: Is Open.Theremin.UNO worth it? Cannot it be drastically simplified?
liked the playability and the sound very much true the suitcase looks a bit odd feel free to deepen your concerns even by p m if you like link Report Post Posted 3 9 2015 10 58 27 PM 24 3 14 From Buenos Aires Argentina Joined 9 14 2008 threads posts Wonderful consequences of this topic Talking about CV I was thinking if it would be feasible to use instead of a variable oscillator heterodyning with a fixed one just a load sensing over a fixed oscillator just like the EM EW does for the volume antenna Note for Etherwave newcomers if there is any The EM EW theremin for the volume antenna uses a fixed though slightly tunable oscillator and the inductors antenna capacitance load the circuit with an impedance that varies according to hand distance i e the capacitante changes thus the resonant frequency of the series circuit changes When properly tunned the current drain varies with hand distance thus the voltage drop accross the inductor changes This voltage drop drives the VCA The proposal here is to use this technique and let the voltage drop to drive a VCO Then the resulting voltage can simply be acquired with a fast and precise enough ADC to drive the wave generator If the fixed oscillator frequency generation is uP controlled it can be automatically tunned I seem to remember that this approach has been discussed before when Fred was designing a theremin but cannot find where If not can we discuss it link Report Post Posted 3 13 2015 8 33 41 AM 25 gaudi From Switzerland CH Joined 8 6 2010 threads posts Thank you Thierry for this great contribution and everyone for this constructive thread I think the approach by Thierry to mathematically model classic theremin instruments adds a lot to better understand the physics of the instrument and holds a lot of potential for future developments link Report Post Posted 3 13 2015 8 41 09 AM 26 gaudi From Switzerland CH Joined 8 6 2010 threads posts Gaudi I think the limitations of the Arduino are really holding you back at this point There are lots of processor project boards out there now you might even find one with integrated audio DAC The open theremin shield should fit on a Freesceale Board frdm k64f with 32bit M4 ARM Core This would probably allow real time sound generation based on mathematical models Who want s to give it a try As Thierry noted the 3 3V supply must be considered link Report Post Posted 1 13 2016 3 39 51 PM 27 Seawolf2913 Joined 1 13 2016 threads posts Sorry for posting so late to this thread Gaudi I ll be purchasing an uno board soon Just have to inform my bank that they should clear an international purchase Have you ever come across the Teensy boards https www pjrc com teensy teensy31 html 72MHz Cortex M4 processor that can be programmed in the arduino
