I think my days of dedicated hardware calculators are over Oh sometimes something about their feel will probably cause me to have nostalgic feelings the way slide rules still do Oh it does look beautiful though I fully understand the reason for doing the conversion just looking at the pictures makes me want one But my 30 7 Android tablet is I think probably as important an event for me as when I got my first scientific calculator and put my slide rule away Maths appliances have been of utmost importance to me as without them I am so slow its useless My 9 year old son can do mental sums twice as fast as I can and is now manipulating algebra at about the level I can manage and beating me at chess Its one of my greatest joys knowing my children are way brighter than I am Fred link Report Post Posted 12 28 2013 9 56 13 PM 3 dewster From Northern NJ USA Joined 2 17 2012 threads posts I think my days of dedicated hardware calculators are over Oh sometimes something about their feel will probably cause me to have nostalgic feelings the way slide rules still do Oh it does look beautiful though I fully understand the reason for doing the conversion just looking at the pictures makes me want one But my 30 7 Android tablet is I think probably as important an event for me as when I got my first scientific calculator and put my slide rule away Maths appliances have been of utmost importance to me as without them I am so slow its useless FredM Glad you re digging your Android tablets Fred I ll have to give one a try soon For me data input via some kind of tactile input for the math device I m using is pretty mandatory I don t want to have to check every number I enter because that s tedious HP keys front hinge with the click dome underneath are pretty responsive I don t think a touchscreen interface could completely fill the bill for me But yes calculators are something of an anachronism It would have been nice if the computing middle ground PDAs or similar had worked out a little better and a little earlier Laptops are overkill at times particularly when you just want to sit and think with your notebook A 3D monitor with a chordal keyboard would be neat perhaps in a binocular form factor One of the reasons I wanted to design a processor was to get a better handle on the lower level but designing a personal computing device from the ground up is a daunting task a dream I hope to see come true one day 1 and 2 stack processors languages aren t yielding the magic I d hoped for Hive is now up to 8 stacks so even the WP34S project isn t fully what I m searching for They need

been winding inductors for almost half a century and I don t want to fiddle with these Dual gate MOSFET s are available and cheap but so far I ve only found surface mount types Also there is a lot of conversion gain probably too much Two JFET s I think are better and do the same thing link Report Post Posted 10 2 2012 8 53 53 PM 6 w0ttm From Small town Missouri on Rt 66 Joined 2 27 2011 threads posts RCA pitch osc link Report Post Posted 10 2 2012 11 07 37 PM 7 FredM From Eastleigh Hampshire U K Fred Mundell Electronics Engineer Primarily Analogue CV Synths 1974 1980 Theremin developer 2007 to present soon to be Developing Trading as WaveCrafter com Joined 12 7 2007 threads posts Hi Charlie You are absolutely correct My Osc schematic bears little resemblance to the RCA particularly with regard to the charactaristics of L1 I simply knocked this simulation together as a quick first thought for evaluating the Armstrong oscillator As I see it the tickler winding L1 B should have little impact but I could be completely wrong about this my view is that as long as it is capable of maintaining the required feedback to keep the oscillator oscillating anything would work As I see it the critical requirement is to get the value of L1 A and the tank capacitance C2 the same as the RCA if one wants the circuit to respond to antenna capacitance via the antenna EQ circuit the same way as an RCA It is the respective values of the tank resonator and the antenna resonator which should determine this so I have kept these the same as the RCA This oscillator could be changed to work at EW frequencies by changing the values of L1 A using pins 2 3 rather than pins 1 3 for L1 A and C2 and replacing the antenna EQ values to those on the EW for example It is only because Uncle Howie seems to think the oscillator design is critical as in Armstrong the same LC arrangement that I bothered to explore this And the results are interesting This oscillator is simple and seems quite reliable ON SIMULATION But I really cannot see anything which particularly places it in any special class except perhaps the following What my circuit does not emulate is the somewhat strange configuration at the tank capacitors of the RCA Referring to the above diagrams it can be seen that my tank capacitors C2 are taken to 0V whereas the RCA tank capacitors C1 C2 sit between the plate and the grid I do not understand this someone knowlegable on tubes could perhaps help me out and explain how this is working The other factor I notice about the RCA circuit which is different to most if not all transistor certainly BJT circuits I have seen is that it looks like impedances will be a lot higher One

analogue and sensor electronics Been an EE for nearly 40 years Working with designing developing prototyping planning production of theremins and related musical electronics since 2007 Its extremely unlikely that I will ever put theremins into production The window has closed and I dont have energy health or finances to re open it All I can now do is hope to assist those on this path and freely disseminate anything

of the mod easier if you don t like it and gives you the chance to play around with the circuit topology and values Who knows maybe you ll stumble across something you ll like better Now for some pix Above is a view of the prototype with C2 and C6 already soldered to the ends of the wires Those are snipped off LED leads poking out the bottom for mounting Above is the prototype soldered in position You can see here how one lead of C6 C3 are soldered back to the main board and the third wire goes to the empty hole at C3 Above is a more arial view of the install Note the jumper is on a single pin for storage Above is the schematic and how I decided to do the vectorboard layout This is an x ray view of the vector board looking down from the top the copper pads are on the bottom EDIT 2014 04 04 If you experience motorboating or a ba BUP ba BUP sound near 0 Hz the null point you should try decoupling both of the collector leads independently as FredM suggests The top box shows a 100 ohm series resistor going from the positive rail to the collector and 0 47 uF from collector to ground So for the two transistors in the mod you would need two resistors and two capacitors This fix reportedly worked for TW member Marekbuk link Report Post Posted 3 14 2012 10 33 12 PM 2 RS Theremin From 60 mi N of San Diego CA Joined 2 15 2005 threads posts RS Theremin said in thread ESPE01 installation success Dewster I am also waiting to see your schematic on an EW low freq fix Did you know most schematics for theremin advancement come out of the America s and that Europe with some of the finest modern instruments keep most of their schematics secret hum Does pond separation create a silent competition which could actually be a good thing dewster This is very clean would you mind if I made an iron on pdf from your schematic I will place dewster 2012 in the copper It is a great electronic starter project for EW owners Everything is at Radio Shack except the 18 pf caps why is this value selected link Report Post Posted 3 14 2012 10 50 53 PM 3 dewster From Northern NJ USA Joined 2 17 2012 threads posts RS Theremin Everything is at Radio Shack except the 18 pf caps why is this value selected For a bit of gain over 15 pF not too critical I got them from a really handy tiny cap assortment RS used to sell too bad they don t anymore They ought to change their name to Cell Phone Shack or similar Feel free to do anything you want with this mod crediting me is nice but not necessary Hopefully others will build it and chime in with useful changes and suggestions One thing I didn t try was using FETs instead of BJTs I also didn t try resistively coupling the emitters I imagine you could do the mixing directly that way link Report Post Posted 3 14 2012 11 42 52 PM 4 Thierry From Colmar France Joined 12 31 2007 threads posts Congratulations That looks like an early ancestor of the ESPE01 module I m sure that one may obtain great results with this simple circuit under very specific conditions but did you consider the different circuit variants of the Etherwave The signal levels vary from one circuit board release to another A huge difference exists between 211A and the later variants due to increasing slightly the oscillator s frequencies and reducing the number of linearization coils Another big step was between 211C and 211D when Moog replaced the variable inductors from Toko by others from Coilcraft and had to modify the working points and thus the amplitude of the oscillators Fred Mundell published a very similar circuit as yours already 2 years ago on Element14 But he added that he could give no warranty since he had no occasion to run thorough and exhaustive tests Did you test your circuit on all board variants A B C D F G H J for long term stability Did you make sure that the load of your circuit seen by the oscillators will not vary with temperature varying junction capacitance of your buffer transistors Did you analyze the waveform at the input of the LM13700 Are amplitude and harmonic spectrum the same as before And how does it look in older Etherwaves which have still a LM13600 instead Did you travel around for concerts and workshops with your own modified instrument during a year in order to check mechanical stability and to get opinions from professional thereminists I would find it very dangerous to publish such a simple and most probably not long term tested circuit Will you be responsible if someone installs your circuit and perhaps only a year later or so one of the oscillator s transistors goes up in smoke Please let the readers know the answers so that they can estimate the risk for their loved instrument Actually I would not call it a great starter project Christopher It s like the Glasgow Theremin circuits a half baked snapshot which should be given the time to stand the test of time before being published on this platform or elsewhere link Report Post Posted 3 15 2012 12 29 38 new to this area that s my fault but like I said in the mod text buffering is probably the first approach the average EE would try when faced with unwanted

theremin My understanding is that it is DIY only link Report Post Posted 5 23 2012 10 10 16 AM 5 coalport From Canada Joined 8 1 2008 threads posts Hi All Souls I agree with Gordon on this one The best sounding theremin is the one you like best Personal tastes in timbre and tone vary greatly When judging the sound of a theremin you have to take into consideration not only the instrument itself but the amp speaker setup as well as the way it was recorded assuming that you are not hearing it live One thing that cannot be underestimated is the importance of HOW the instrument is played Clara Rockmore s beautiful custom theremin that Lev built to her personal specifications does not sound like the same instrument when played by someone else You suggest that with the Moog Etherwave theremin the notes get pitchy as they get higher If by the word pitchy you mean flat or sharp of the note that is not the fault of the instrument That is the player As for linearity no theremin is absolutely linear Not only that linearity shifts depending on temperature humidity and how long the theremin has been turned on As a singer you have a head start in learning to play the theremin I would recommend the Etherwave and there are some excellent modifications you can make to it in order to improve its range and versatility If you don t like the sound you are hearing CHANGE IT As Bob Moog once pointed out The theremin is an entirely electronic instrument and as such it is totally at home in the electronic environment These days there are a thousand ways to radically change the sound of a theremin using peripherals Experiment Find your own theremin voice I recently got an ELECTRO HARMONIX Talking Machine a relatively inexpensive little device which has turned out to be terrific fun and it has turned a theremin that had a voice somewhere between a bumble bee and a hair dryer into an Italian tenor http www youtube com watch v a2cQ7NYM Wc First have music in your soul If you have that then you will find a way to do it Clara Rockmore link Report Post Posted 5 23 2012 10 43 50 AM 6 GordonC From Croxley Green Hertfordshire UK Joined 10 5 2005 threads posts I may be able to provide sound samples of the etherwave with Talking Machine in a couple of weeks Noting Peter s comments about how it is recorded I ll be D I ing the theremin straight into an M Audio Firewire Solo recording interface so the sound is not coloured by my amp Play it back through the amp you plan to use for your theremin may because I just found a local shop with a very wide range of effects boxes The Talking Machine is on my list of effects boxes to audition If I like it better than
