else do you do professionally when not playing with The Sixteen I hold timpani chairs in about half a dozen other orchestras mostly period ensembles What with teaching and percussion performing I am kept busy enough What football team do you support Ipswich Town Please tell us a little about your instrument In common with other period instrument timpanists I tend to collect instruments some original some reproductions and have 30 to 40 timpani in various states of repair in my possession Probably the most unusual are my baroque tourers a pair of fibreglass timpani that I made as a result of health safety laws governing baggage weight and introduced by the airlines in October 2003 Interestingly those regulations came not from the EU but from the USA Having been turned away with my instruments on 2 separate occasions by British Airways at Heathrow Airport I decided it was time to act The idea was born I needed something more aircraft friendly The single item weight limit at the time of writing is 32kg Consider our colleagues the double bassists whose instruments in their Stevenson fibreglass cases weigh in at about 55kg apiece How do they get away with it
