  • Good and Bad Gender Equality - Unreal Blog
issue is a minefield as far as political correctness is concerned And I m barging on to thin ice where no sane person would dream of stepping in But a columnist is allowed to be opinionated and let s face it a bit obnoxious So here we go I feel that there are good and bad arguments for equality Let s take the case of tennis Grand Slams where they achieved equality by equalizing the prize moneys The argument was simply that women and men were equal and they deserved the same prize money To me it wasn t much of an argument at all It was a form of condescension It is a bit like the condescending though no doubt well meaning encouragements offered by native speakers when you learn their tongue Towards the end of my five year sojourn in France I could speak pretty good French and people used to tell me encouragingly of course that I spoke well To me it always meant that I didn t speak well enough for if I did they just wouldn t notice it at all would they After all they don t go around congratulating each other on their perfect French Similarly if men and women tennis players were really equal nobody would speak of equality There wouldn t be men s singles and women s singles to begin with there would be just singles So this argument for equality in prize money is bad one There is a much better argument Prize money is sponsored by corporate bodies bent on promoting their products The sponsors are therefore interested in TV viewership Given that women s singles draws in as many viewers as men s the prize money should be equal Now that is a solid argument We should be looking at dimensions where equality really does exist rather than trying to artificially impose it When such dimensions of equality encompass all aspects of our lives we will be able to safely say that gender equality has arrived We should not be looking for equality in testosterone driven playing fields which by the way may include higher echelons of the corporate pyramid We should be relegating debates on equality to irrelevance by attributing enough respect and value to natural differences Articulated by a man this statement of mine of course is a bit suspect Aren t I trying to shortchange women by offering them useless respect rather than real equality I once heard a similar exchange when someone argued that women in my native land of Kerala enjoyed higher level of gender equality because coming from a matrilineal system they ruled the household The pithy rebuttal to that argument came from a Keralite woman Men are perfectly happy to let women rule their households as long as they get to rule the world Then again we are pretty close to letting Hillary Clinton rule the world with just two men standing in her way So perhaps gender equality has

the French manage to have the rest of the world eat things that smell and taste like feet And I stand in awe of the French when the world eagerly parts with their hard earned dough to gobble up such monstrosities as fattened duck liver fermented dairy produce pig intestines filled with blood snails veal entrails and whatnot The French manage this feat not by explaining the benefits and selling points of these ahem products but by a perfecting a supremely sophisticated display of incredulity at anyone who doesn t know their value In other words not by advertising the products but by embarrassing you Although the French are not known for their physical stature they do an admirable job of looking down on you when needed I got a taste of this sophistication recently I confessed to a friend of mine that I never could develop a taste for caviar that quintessential icon of French sophistication My friend looked askance at me and told me that I must have eaten it wrong She then explained to me the right way of eating it It must have been my fault how could anybody not like fish eggs And she would know she is a classy SIA girl This incident reminded me of another time when I said to another friend clearly not as classy as this SIA girl that I didn t quite care fore Pink Floyd He gasped and told me never to say anything like that to anybody one always loved Pink Floyd I should admit that I have had my flirtations with bouts of sophistication My most satisfying moments of sophistication came when I managed to somehow work a French word or expression into my conversation or writing In a recent column I managed to slip in tête à tête although the unsophisticated printer threw away the accents Accents add a flourish to the level of sophistication because they confuse the heck out of the reader The sneaking suspicion that the French may have been pulling a fast one on us crept up on me when I read something that Scott Adams of Dilbert fame wrote He wondered what this ISO 9000 fad was all about Those who secure the ISO certification proudly flaunt it while everybody else seems to covet it But does anyone know what the heck it is Adams conjectured that it was probably a practical joke a bunch of inebriated youngsters devised in a bar ISO sounded very much like Iz zat ma beer in some eastern European language he says Could this sophistication fad also be a practical joke A French conspiracy If it is hats off to the French Don t get me wrong I m no Francophobe Some of my best friends are French It is not their fault if others want to imitate them follow their gastronomical habits and attempt usually in vain to speak their tongue I do it too I swear in French whenever I miss an

  • Philosophy of Money - Unreal Blog
It doesn t possess an intrinsic value that for instance water does If you are thirsty you find that water has enormous intrinsic value Of course if you have money you can buy water or Perrier if you want to be sophisticated and quench your thirst But we may find ourselves in situations where we may not be able to buy things with money Stranded in a desert for instance dying of thirst we may not be able to buy water despite our sky high credit limits or the hundreds of dollars we may have in our wallet One reason for this inability of ours is obvious we may be alone The basic transactional value of money evaporates when we have nobody to transact with The second dimension of the meta ness of money is economical It is illustrated in the well worn supply and demand principle assuming transactional liquidity which is a term I just cooked up to sound erudite I confess I mean to say even if we have willing sellers of water in the desert they may see that we are dying for it and jack up the price just because we are willing and able to pay This apparent ripping off on the part of the devious vendors of water perfectly legal by the way is possible only if the commodity in question is in plentiful supply We need commodity liquidity as it were It is when the liquidity dries up that the fun begins The last drop of water in a desert has infinite intrinsic value This effect may look similar to the afore mentioned supply and demand phenomenon but it really is different The intrinsic value dominates everything else much like the strong force over short distances in particle physics And this domination is the flipside of the law of diminishing marginal utility in economics The thing that looks a bit bizarre about money is that it seems to run counter to the law of diminishing marginal utility The more money you have the more you want it Now why is that It is especially strange given its lack of intrinsic value Great financial minds could not figure it out but came up with pithy and memorable statements like Greed for lack of a better word is good Although that particular genius was only fictional he does epitomize much of the thinking in the modern corporate and financial world Good or bad let s assume that greed is an essential part of human nature and look at what we can do with it Note that I want to do something with it not about it an important distinction I intrepid columnist that I am want to show you how to use other people s greed to make more money Photo by 401 K 2013 Share this Click to share on Reddit Opens in new window Click to share on Voat Opens in new window Click to share on Facebook Opens in new window Click

  • Are Radio Sources and Gamma Ray Bursts Luminal Booms? - Unreal Blog
but with vastly different time constants The spectra of GRBs rapidly evolve from region to an optical or even RF afterglow similar to the spectral evolution of the hotspots of a radio source as they move from the core to the lobes Other similarities have begun to attract attention in the recent years This article explores the similarities between a hypothetical luminal boom and these two astrophysical phenomena although such a luminal boom is forbidden by the Lorentz invariance Treating GRB as a manifestation of a hypothetical luminal boom results in a model that unifies these two phenomena and makes detailed predictions of their kinematics Figure 3 The radio jet and lobes in the hyperluminous radio galaxy Cygnus A The hotspots in the two lobes the core region and the jets are clearly visible Reproduced from an image courtesy of NRAO AUI Conclusions In this article we looked at the spatio temporal evolution of a supersonic object both in its position and the sound frequency we hear We showed that it closely resembles GRBs and DRAGNs if we were to extend the calculations to light although a luminal boom would necessitate superluminal motion and is therefore forbidden This difficulty notwithstanding we presented a unified model for Gamma Ray Bursts and jet like radio sources based on bulk superluminal motion We showed that a single superluminal object flying across our field of vision would appear to us as the symmetric separation of two objects from a fixed core Using this fact as the model for symmetric jets and GRBs we explained their kinematic features quantitatively In particular we showed that the angle of separation of the hotspots was parabolic in time and the redshifts of the two hotspots were almost identical to each other Even the fact that the spectra of the hotspots are in the radio frequency region is explained by assuming hyperluminal motion and the consequent redshift of the black body radiation of a typical star The time evolution of the black body radiation of a superluminal object is completely consistent with the softening of the spectra observed in GRBs and radio sources In addition our model explains why there is significant blue shift at the core regions of radio sources why radio sources seem to be associated with optical galaxies and why GRBs appear at random points with no advance indication of their impending appearance Although it does not address the energetics issues the origin of superluminality our model presents an intriguing option based on how we would perceive hypothetical superluminal motion We presented a set of predictions and compared them to existing data from DRAGNs and GRBs The features such as the blueness of the core symmetry of the lobes the transient and X Ray bursts the measured evolution of the spectra along the jet all find natural and simple explanations in this model as perceptual effects Encouraged by this initial success we may accept our model based on luminal boom as a working model for these

the first digits to see their frequency of occurrence To a mathematician or a quant there is nothing more natural that natural logarithm So the first candidate distribution for naturally occurring numbers is something like RV exp RV where RV is a uniformly distributed random variable between zero and ten The rationale behind this choice is an assumption that the number of digits in naturally occurring numbers is uniformly distributed between zero and an upper limit Indeed you can choose other fancier distributions for naturally occurring numbers I tried a couple of other candidate distributions using two uniformly distributed between zero and ten random variables RV1 and RV2 RV1 exp RV2 and exp RV1 RV2 All these distributions turn out to be good guesses for naturally occurring numbers as illustrated in Figure 2 Figure 2 The distribution of the first digits in the simulation of naturally occurring numbers compared to the prediction The first digits of the numbers that I generated follow Benford s law to an uncanny degree of accuracy Why does this happen One good thing about computer simulation is that you can dig deeper and look at intermediate results For instance in our first simulation with the distribution RV exp RV we can ask the question What are the values of RV for which we get a certain first digit The answer is shown in Figure 3a Note that the ranges in RV that give the first digit 1 are much larger than those that give 9 About six times larger in fact as expected Notice how pattern repeats itself as the simulated natural numbers roll over from the first digit of 9 to 1 as an odometer tripping Figure 3a The ranges in a uniformly distributed between 0 and 10 random variable RV that result in different first digits in RV exp RV Note that the first digit of 1 occurs much more frequently than the rest as expected A similar trend can be seen in our fancier simulation with two random variables The regions in their joint distributions that give rise to various first digits in RV1 exp RV2 are shown in Figure 3b Notice the large swathes of deep blue corresponding to the first digit of 1 and compare their area to the red swathes for the first digit 9 Figure 3b The regions in the joint distribution of two uniformly distributed between 0 and 10 random variables RV1 and RV2 that result in different first digits in RV1 exp RV2 This exercise gives me the insight I was hoping to glean from the simulation The reason for the preponderance of smaller digits in the first position is that the distribution of naturally occurring numbers is usually a tapering one there is usually an upper limit to the numbers and as you get closer to the upper limit the probably density becomes smaller and smaller As you pass the first digit of 9 and then roll over to 1 suddenly its range becomes much

it where is my iPhone I need a calculator No wait it is 17 for a quarter of a minute So 17 times 4 Where is my calculator dammit Granted it was a slightly stressful situation But this is not at all the way my mind used to work I thought back to my younger days Say 20 or 30 years ago if I were doing the same heart rate checking within the first few seconds my mind would have noticed that I was getting roughly a beat per second so the BPM was going to be about 60 In about five seconds I would have noticed that it was going to be a bit over 60 By the tenth second I would have known that I got between 11 and 12 beats so the rate was going to be between 66 and 72 And by the time I got 17 beats I would have declared 68 knowing that it was two beats over 15 per 15 seconds so 8 beats over 60 and consistent with my earlier estimates At the same time my mind would have done a sort of long multiplication 17 times four so 40 plus seven times four so 68 correct and a second verification Three under 20 so 12 under 80 68 correct All these would have happened within a half a second of completing the count to 17 beats So these days when people look to me for quick arithmetic calculations and estimates I feel a bit uncomfortable And honestly a bit sorry for myself It is not this aging body that bothers me I just miss that mind I used to have Share this Click to share on Reddit Opens in new window Click to share on Voat Opens in new window Click
