  • VLC Lets You Cache Videos on Apple TV
has become the de facto standard for alternative media management and playback It uses a client server architecture which puts most of the stress of transcoding video from a wider variety of formats on the server usually your Mac The advantage of this design is that there s a Plex front end for many platforms even including so called smart TVs There s also FireCore s Infuse which can connect to a Plex server or SMB shares but transcodes video within the app itself But both of these require that you store all your video on a Mac acting as a server Another option has now emerged for the Apple TV the venerable open source video player VLC It offers many of the features of Infuse along with a feature that users have wanted for years video storage on the Apple TV itself Apple s philosophy behind the Apple TV has long been that it s a satellite device dependent upon the cloud or a computer running iTunes for storage But that s problematic for users who have weak Internet access or unreliable Wi Fi And even that may not be enough for some content I m lucky enough to have great connections but my Apple TV still struggles to stream the 19 GB despecialized edition of Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope When you open the VLC app on the Apple TV the first tab is Local Network which lets you play video from Plex SMB and FTP servers But if you want to download video to your Apple TV to avoid streaming problems go to the second tab Remote Playback Click Enable Remote Playback and you re presented with two URLs one with an IP address and another based on your Apple TV s nickname configured in Settings AirPlay Apple TV Name These URLs are accessible only on your local network Go to your Mac which must be connected to the same network as your Apple TV open a Web browser and enter whichever of the URLs seems easier they re equivalent You ll probably also want to bookmark this page for later access To send a video to the VLC app on your Apple TV just drag it from the Finder into your browser window If that doesn t work on your browser click the plus button to use the file picker dialog instead But before you go filling up your Apple TV with videos let s discuss the limitations First the Apple TV doesn t have a lot of storage either 32 GB or 64 GB before you started loading apps and if you try to send a video that s too large the error message won t be displayed in the browser but in the VLC app on your Apple TV Also make sure that your video is in one of VLC s many supported formats and be aware that VLC cannot play DRM protected videos from the iTunes Store unless you find a

  • Apple TV App Store Growing Quickly… In the Wrong Direction?
message indicates required fields To help us avoid automated attempts to spam recipients please enter the words below Entertainment 11 Dec 2015 Listen Print Comment 5 Apple TV App Store Growing Quickly In the Wrong Direction by Josh Centers Analytics company appFigures has released some fascinating early information about the Apple TV s App Store First the good news a little over one month after opening the Apple TV s App Store already boasts over 2 600 apps appFigures estimates that 447 new apps are added every week and it expects 10 000 apps to be available by early 2016 That rate of growth is phenomenal but a deeper dive into the statistics show that developers might be moving in the wrong direction By far the largest Apple TV app category is games with over 1 000 now available The second largest category entertainment which includes streaming apps like Netflix and HBO NOW contains only about 400 apps The numbers drop off fast from there with some categories having only a handful of apps there s room for more innovation here as I discussed in Apps that Reveal the Apple TV s Potential 9 November 2015 The Apple TV App Store may have vastly more games than anything else but when you examine the most popular app categories games come in a distant second Entertainment apps account for 28 of the Apple TV s 50 most popular apps while only 8 are games It seems that most Apple TV users want to stream content not shoot aliens or solve puzzles This isn t surprising as I concluded in FunBITS Testing the Siri Remote as a Game Controller 20 November 2015 gaming is a secondary consideration for the Apple TV not the main attraction Although I m a gamer I m more frustrated by the Apple TV s lack of streaming media options If you want to watch Sling TV listen to music via Spotify or watch Amazon Video you have to turn to other devices While I m sure all of these will come to the Apple TV sooner or later see Amazon Instant Video Coming to Apple TV 30 November 2015 the wait is vexing As on most mobile platforms free apps dominate with 61 percent of Apple TV apps costing nothing There s still room for developers to make some money with 39 percent of apps being paid although 85 percent of those cost less than 2 99 It s a tough situation since Apple TV owners may be hesitant to buy unknown apps willy nilly but without the massive user base of the iPhone and iPad to provide volume developers may have a hard time justifying ongoing development A key stumbling block is discoverability which is worse on the Apple TV App Store than Apple s other App Stores not that it s good there While developers can submit apps to more than 20 categories Apple makes only 7 of those categories visible in the App Store

  • SURFboard Cable Modems Vulnerable to Remote DoS Exploit
to log in with a user name and password then your modem is at risk My understanding is that the administration interface can only be accessed from within the network and not from the outside So for the attack to work a malicious person has to trick a person into using a link that sends the restart or reset single to the cable modem It takes about 5 to 10 minutes for a cable modem to reset It would take an attacker getting a script that launched every 5 minutes to reset the modem to maintain the denial of service attack Reply John Robinson 2016 04 10 14 45 John I inserted http 192 168 100 1 index htm into the Safari google search and came across a Surfboard Status window Under Configuration is the RESET button It works What I don t understand is how someone can sit outside my firewall and reset MY modem I can understand if they were controlling my network from some malicious software but I see no signs of this nor have I clicked any unknown emailed links to give them access so how can they command reset the modem if they aren t in my network Sorry I am slow to some things Reply Curtis Wilcox 2016 04 10 14 50 They trick you into clicking a link that target that points to the particular URL s at http 192 168 100 1 I followed the article links and one says an image tag that has the particular URL as its src even though that s clearly not an image is sufficient to make it work so you don t have to click anything just visit the bad page Reply John Robinson 2016 04 10 14 59 Curtis so simply visiting a previously unvisited website can set off the reset command implanted in the webpage Reply John G in Orlando 2016 04 10 17 32 Basically a malicious person can hide the reset instruction in HTML code so when a person loads the web page the reset command is sent to the modem For example a normal bit of HTML code to present a picture would look something like An attacker would instead use something like which would trick your web browser into going to the modem s administration page and pressing the reset button Obviously secret reset code is not the actual attack method I do not want people to accidentally click on the real thing The danger here is that the modem reset method can be hidden in any website and the moment a person s web browser comes across it the modem well be reset thus knocking a person offline until the modem finishes resetting The attack will only work when a person loads or visits that particular web page with the hidden reset code and it will run each time the page is loaded Reply John G in Orlando 2016 04 10 17 38 Oops the comment system stripped
