  • Previously Downloaded OS X Installers No Longer Work
get Mountain Lion and Mavericks again Reply Mark 2016 03 03 02 34 Glad to see a news site covering this I stumbled across this issue last week and managed to piece pretty much the same things together Recorded on http www sallonoroff co uk blog 2016 02 when the os x installer cant be verified including the OpenSSL command to check the expiry dates on any installers you might already have saved Reply Adam Engst 2016 03 03 09 37 Yeah I m kicking myself slightly since I was aware of the certificate problem in mid February but got distracted by other things before getting around to writing about the apps And although a few people raised the installer issue at that point I didn t notice until Randy posted on TidBITS Talk Reply Jim Carr 2016 03 03 03 53 If you want to download a fresh copy of an older OS X installer make sure you log into App Store on a Mac old enough to run it For example Apple will not allow a 2013 MacPro to download Lion for an older Mac that still uses it Reply Adam Engst 2016 03 03 09 34 Good point Jim thanks We ll add that to the article On my 27 inch Retina iMac Apple won t let me download the Lion Mountain Lion or Mavericks installers Reply Mark 2016 03 03 12 23 That is a very good point Jim I d not even considered it since all my Macs are old enough Reply GIl Poulsen 2016 03 03 07 28 If all your previously downloaded installers show DOWNLOADED in your Purchases list is there some simple way to clear that so that you can re download these newer installers I have tried clearing cookies and resetting the App from the Developer menu and also purging all store caches from Library Caches but no dice Reply GIl Poulsen 2016 03 03 07 28 And deleted the installers from Applications just to clarify Reply Adam Engst 2016 03 03 09 39 Have you rebooted after deleting everything I can t think of anything else that would be necessary although you could also try signing out of the App Store and back in from Store Sign Out Reply SteveD 2016 04 03 15 04 Did you empty trash This article and this method just helped me to re dl the Yosemite installer I had the exact symptoms you list Great article Josh team Reply Marv 2016 03 03 09 43 I m not a huge fan of using Terminal The temporary solution to set system date to 1 Feb 2016 via terminal scares me Can the same thing be done using System Preferences Date Time if Set date and time automatically is unchecked and date set to 2 1 2016 If Terminal must be used what is the Terminal command to set the date back to the real time This is the problem I have with posters on various forums They give the command on how to do something but fail to give the command to undo what you just did Reply Adam Engst 2016 03 03 09 55 The reason for the Terminal command is that once you re in the installer you can t get to the Date Time preference pane to change the date but you can get to Terminal That s meant as a oh drat workaround that prevents an hour long download just as you were starting to install The proper solution is to get a new version of the installer Regardless you don t need to set the date back using Terminal after the installation because you can easily use the Date Time preference pane to do so instead It may not even be necessary depending on your settings because the Date Time preference pane may automatically fix the date and time by consulting a remote time server I ll clarify this in the article Reply Nate 2016 03 03 20 17 Don t be scared of Terminal in this case The command you are running can only affect the time as long as you don t type anything other than the date command you are at exactly zero risk of unintentionally performing other operations that could harm your system Reply Marv 2016 03 03 10 18 Thanks Adam but my question remains Can you set the date and time via system preferences prior to doing the install and have it work Reply Adam Engst 2016 03 03 11 06 Probably assuming automatic time setting is turned off but if you re in a position where you can set up your installation environment in advance you should just get a new installer so it s not an issue Reply Josh Centers 2016 03 03 11 07 If you re thinking that far ahead you d be better off downloading the newer installer with the current certificate Reply Mark 2016 03 03 12 16 If the Mac still has a working OSX installation then yes you can use System Preferences But say you re booting from a USB drive because your Mac won t start up or you ve put in a new hard drive then Terminal is your only option Reply Marv 2016 03 03 12 12 Yes I understand the best practice is to re download the new installers Give your readers a heads up and save them some time If you have previously downloaded and saved the installer on a different partition or external hard drive unmount them before downloading If you don t the download does not appear in Applications because somehow it knows you have it stored elsewhere Just lost 2 hours as a result of this 1st one failed unmounted the partitions and externals 2nd attempt successful Thanks Reply Adam Engst 2016 03 03 12 50 Indeed that s why we recommend deleting all old installers before starting Besides you might need the disk space for the new

  • The Power of Preview: Pulling Files into Preview
keep it If you put multiple items in the scanner Preview scans them to separate files all of which are shown in a single Preview window One last thing While viewing a PDF you can add additional pages to it by choosing Edit Insert Page from Scanner The scanning interface here is simpler with only a checkbox to use the scanner s document feeder if available a Rescan button for trying again and an Add To Document button It s not clear how Preview chooses resolution in this scenario but it seems to be relatively high The page is inserted after the currently selected page though you can also drag it around within Preview s thumbnail sidebar Take Screenshots Those who write about technology have memorized Apple s keyboard shortcuts to take Mac screenshots Normal people who need to take a screenshot only a few times a year should turn to Preview instead Just as the previous features also appeared in Apple s Image Capture utility the screenshot capabilities are mirrored in Apple s Grab utility also stored in the Utilities folder In Preview choose File Take Screenshot There you find three options From Selection After choosing this command your cursor becomes a crosshair Click and drag the crosshair over the screen area you wish to capture From Window Choose this command and your cursor becomes a camera Move the camera cursor over a window and the window turns blue to indicate that it s selected Click to take a screenshot of that window By default your window screenshots come with a large shadow to remove it Option click the selected window From Entire Screen When you choose this command a 10 second countdown begins which you can cancel by pressing the Esc key Once the countdown finishes Preview takes a screenshot of your entire screen If you have multiple screens Preview creates screenshots for each one The timer is useful when you need to set up the screen in such a way that wouldn t be possible with an instantaneous screenshot Although it won t appear in the final screenshot regardless you can move the countdown timer bar around to get it out of your way Unlike OS X s screenshot shortcuts which dump the screenshots on your Desktop Preview opens each new screenshot as a PNG file in an Untitled window where you can make any modifications you like before saving it Simple but effective Wait modifications Yes that s right Preview is also a surprisingly full featured graphic editor too But that s a topic for a future article Preview may seem unassuming but it s packed with useful capabilities and we ll be looking at more of them in the future PDFpen finding things this stuff is great for me Thank you Reply Josh Centers 2016 02 25 13 26 Thank you so much Preview is probably my favorite Apple app so I m ecstatic to write about it for TidBITS Reply Gerrie Shults 2016 02 25 12 47 You should add that Preview scanner import works through Bonjour too doesn t have to be USB connected I ll also second Peter Meyer s comment It s all true for me too Reply Josh Centers 2016 02 25 13 31 Thanks we hadn t considered that Reply Adam Engst 2016 02 25 13 51 How do you see this working I have an Epson AcuLaser multi function printer scanner and it appears only if I connect it directly to my Mac and not if it s connected to an AirPort Express which is how we normally use it What s the setup for a Bonjour connection to work Reply Bruce Blakely 2016 03 15 16 38 I can t speak to how this works for the commenter above but I scan into Preview from a networked Brother multi function This also works from Image Capture which has essentially the same scan interface as Preview I can also open Printers Scanners in System Prefs select the device on the left select Scan on the right then click Open Scanner and I end up in a slightly different from Preview ImageCapture interface Printers Scanners tells me the connection to the device is via Bonjour all via ethernet or Wi Fi no USB involved and that I am using a Brother CUPS driver I m running Mavericks but this has all worked since at least OS X cat of 2002 When you say you are connecting your multi function to an AirPort Express do you mean via USB If this works for Bonjour printing but not scanning I would guess that you need a different driver to get the scanning to work via Bonjour I seem to recall that most printers multi functions that I use have different drivers for direct connect USB vs a network connection but

  • Marco Arment on Why Apple Still Sells Old MacBook Pros
you completely The fact that so many people are still buying the old MacBook pro means it offers something they want The retina screen is way overrated On a laptop I don t see enough difference I do see it on the 5K iMac I really really hope that Apple does not replace the MacBook Air with the new Macbook To pay extra for the privilege of buying adapters is ridiculous I do not have any retina or 4K displays and sitting I front of my computer working I never get the feeling that I want one Not only does the new MacBook have only 1 port but it is USB not Thunderbolt so it is limited I have a Mac Pro and a 2011 MacBook Air and both still work perfectly I Apple does decide to replace the Air with that Under Powered 1 port Machine I will but the latest Air and keep it as long as I can I am sure others feel as I do Ian 2016 01 11 08 12 Marco states geeks like him wonder why people would buy such an outdated machine I find it strange that screens that were standard less than 2 to 3 years ago are labeled by him as low resolution In the summer of 2014 I decided to replace my 2008 15 inch MacBook Pro despite it being outfitted with maximum RAM and SSDs Although Mid 2012 15 inch MacBook Pro s could still be found I knew that I needed the hardware features available in the top of line models all except one a Retina screen That one feature added 1000 to the listed price After finishing configuring my order I had a final price of over 3500 I felt so ashamed and guilty spending so much on that notebook compared to what I had spent for its top of the line predecessor Nevertheless I had to settle for a late 2013 instead of the mid 2014 models which had recently become available and would have meant an extra 500 Not being able to replaced RAM and storage myself was adding insult to injury Jim Gagne 2016 01 11 23 10 I m old enough so that my eyes prefer a big screen and I love a fast processor Two years ago I needed a large MacBook Pro and didn t mind lugging a boat anchor Buying a used 17 early 2011 model through Amazon couldn t have been easier Turns out the supplier was iBuildMacs com Jon is a local guy Los Angeles area who works out of his home LOVE this machine I went back to Jon last month to get an upgraded used 2010 Mac Pro With two 3 33 GHz 6 Core Intel Xeon processors and a 1 GB PCIe SSD it outperforms anything Apple sells today and holds all my old hard drives as backup Cost was about 3000 roughly half what I d pay for a similarly configured new Mac Pro
