scientiae Home Journal Hong Kong DRT 2015 Hong Kong DRT 2015 I m back from the DRT Show in Hong Kong Title slide designed to bamboozle with fancy words I am happy to report that It was a terrific show the first dive industry gathering I ve been to in many years It was wonderful catching up with friends however briefly and making new ones It was a relief getting each of my two talks ready just in time only barely for the first one as well as remembering what I wanted to say and It was sensational to indulge in copious quantities of delicious Cantonese cuisine Burp A big thanks to the organisers for being incredibly well organised Didn t have a single problem from the time I landed to the time I left and the audiovisual equipment worked perfectly Several friends were kind enough to share photos of my talks which I m including here as evidence that I do wear shoes pants and even a jacket every once in a while in response to snide remarks from a few of my friends Oh and also to document my progressive loss of hair Me going blahblahblah about humpback

whale relishing life License image Since I committed publicly in my last post to preparing a two part talk I ve been hard at work figuring out how exactly to do that A clear case of speak first figure it out later I m still polishing up the edges of my presentations but I m happy to report that I ve come up with what seems to me a logical flow for the two part talk which I m calling Megaptera vs Physeter evidence for all parents of the permanent brain damage that can result from watching too many Godzilla movies when you re a kid On Saturday at 4 10pm I ll describe three key aspects of humpback whale life and on Sunday at 4 00pm I ll do the same for sperm whales and then spend five minutes or so wrapping up the two halves of my talk by comparing contrasting the two species My goal is that if you listen to both talks you ll walk away with a decent understanding of these majestic marine mammals how they live their lives and some of the challenges they face I won t be talking much about photography per

walk away thinking Wow I learned a lot He s not quite as clueless as he looks Hours of pondering enhanced by meticulously timed infusions of caffeine in various forms coffee pu erh tea green tea has led me to decide to try something different to make the two talks one 35 minutes or so is far too short to convey more than a cursory introduction to either species so trying to cram as much as possible about humpback whales into 35 minutes for instance would be frustrating for me and probably not entirely satisfying for people watching and listening But if I create an hour presentation 35 minutes or so devoted to humpbacks and the same to sperm whales and give the entire talk over two days I can convey some key points about each type of cetacean but more interestingly perhaps compare and contrast the two Huh you might wonder Why would you do such a convoluted thing You want me to listen to you twice Well humpbacks and sperm whales are representative of the two types of large cetaceans baleen whales and toothed whales In other words a whale is not just a whale The term whale is a generic one that encompasses several dozen species if you count the smaller cetaceans as well Though we refer to both humpbacks and sperms as whales they are actually quite different in many respects habitats food sources social structure and so on The trick to pulling this off of course is that I need to make each talk self contained so that if you listen to me spiel about humpbacks on Saturday and decide that you couldn t possibly put yourself through another of my talks then you will have at least learned something about one species But if

going to be giving a couple of talks in Hong Kong in December at the DRT Show The topics and times are Humpback Whales on 12 December 4 10pm Sperm Whales on 13 December 4 00pm I could ramble on for hours about both species so the show organiser has wisely limited my babbling time to 40 minutes I ll strive for rapid fire 30 to 35 minute presentations leaving

  • Photo Exhibition and Talk | Kochi Prefecture, Japan
between 29 April and 23 December 2015 As part of the opening day activities the Expo organisers invited me to give a couple of presentations about whales along with an accompanying photo exhibition Getting ready on opening day Turnout for the opening was substantial particularly given the relatively remote location with lots of people streaming through from the time the doors opened People gathered to see whale photos Attendees included local government officials and other VIPs In this context I had a chance to meet Ozaki san the governor of Kochi prefecture He s young I say that because we re the same age and seems proactive particularly in his efforts to support positive tourism to Kochi prefecture Me babbling in front of Ozaki san Particularly rewarding for me was seeing the interest across all generations including people who ve lived their entire lives associated with the sea but have never imagined that whales have personalities moods family bonds complex social interactions etc A photo is definitely worth a thousand words Many people were involved in getting me to Kochi i e babysitting me Key among them were Fukui san and Sayuri san pictured below the same people who took

  • Presentation About Humpback Whales in Tokyo, January 2015
two hour presentation for 100 people in Tokyo Set up time before the talk Since I ve done similar talks in Beijing Guangzhou and Hong Kong recently you might think this one should ve been a breeze Not really First I used the New Year holiday period to add a bunch of stuff and expand upon existing materials so I had a lot more to remember I never have a script just talk from memory hence the obvious potential for screw ups Second and more importantly I did the entire presentation in Japanese even learned a bunch of new biology words for the occasion Carrying on a normal conversation in Japanese where there s back and forth pauses for thought and opportunities to ask for clarification isn t a problem Yakking for two hours straight without any other voices involved though now that s taxing worrying about making ridiculous grammatical errors using words incorrectly or just flubbing entire thoughts By the end of my presentation I was exhausted Totally crashed when I got home Me blabbing in Japanese about a massive humpback whale heat run Fortunately there were a lot of friendly faces in the audience and I think I

  • Giving Presentations in China About Humpback Whales
even a proper Master of Ceremonies to run the proceedings Wow I am grateful to everyone who helped make this talk possible Reserved seating for invited guests and media Me launching into an explanation of super mommy humpback photo by Richard Meng Of course I ate a lot while I was in Beijing what else is new right The night before the talk for instance friends treated us to a feast such an understatement that involved delicacy after delicacy with the primary feature being Peking duck If you re going to have Peking duck what better place than in Beijing Peking duck in Beijing Mmmmmmmmm After Beijing we flew down to Guangzhou where I did my humpback whale talk at the Canon showroom This talk was arranged by Sandy who runs a travel and u w photography business in Guangzhou She was kind enough to pick us up at the airport and feed us more excellent food hurray at a restaurant featuring Hakka cuisine before the talk Richard was so familiar with my spiel by this point that I barely had to say anything He did most of the work Freed from the anxiety of wondering whether Richard would find it difficult to understand what I was saying and translate my thoughts I couldn t resist inserting a joke here or there the strain of behaving in an almost mature manner for so many days was unbearable When people started laughing before Richard s translations I realised there were enough people who understood my nonsense that I could wing it a bit more than I had in Beijing saying silly things from time to time Poor Richard had to stay on point and convey the serious bits while trying not to crack up Me subjecting people in Guangzhou to rambling about whales Guangzhou is often referred to as the epicenter of great food in China We had a couple of amazing meals there including a wonderful brunch of dim sum with Gary a friend who has traveled to Tonga with me in the past There was a lot more food than pictured below but once the treats started arriving at the table things got serious and there was really no time for snapshots Dim Sum in Guangzhou Yummy In Guangzhou with friends Gary left and Richard right From Guangzhou it was on to Hong Kong with a stop at the Nauticam factory near Shenzhen where we had a chance to see the impressive machinery processes and teamwork that goes into making Nauticam s range of products Taking a tour of the facilities gave me a new appreciation for how much time effort and investment go into the production of every housing port and even the smallest of parts Housings lined up for inspection at the final part of the production process Richard being silly I of course was studious and serious as always And finally we reached Hong Kong that evening just in time to hook up with fellow photographers
