Properly exposed RAW files often appear flat The objective of RAW format is to capture and retain as much data as possible To bring out proper colours contrast etc a certain amount of post processing is required meaning using software like Photoshop So yes I use Photoshop Not terribly proficiently but I do use the software This does not mean that I cut out parts of photographs and paste bits and pieces into other photos or that I can magically conjur up beautiful images from nothing No one can If the exposure composition lighting etc are not right when I press the shutter button I bin the file So any image you see on this site has been post processed and cleaned up a bit possibly cropped that s it In the rare instances when I composite images or try something fancy like that it s either dead obvious or I state it upfront I do not try to pass off an image created with software as something created in camera Marine Life I spend a lot of time researching observing and studying marine life waiting for the right conditions behaviour angles lighting and so forth I don t poke prod or punch animals and I don t condone anyone else doing anything of the sort All my photographs of marine life are of natural behaviour in natural circumstances I am not however a whacko Eco Nut People who hit other divers on the head with poker sticks or pull out diving knives to threaten others over perceived eco offences are insecure idiots looking for an ego boost Please don t be one of those people Discussion of Products Software Destinations From time to time I write about stuff like cameras underwater equipment software places I ve visited etc I

  • Unauthorized Usage of Whale Photos | Werner Thiele, Aggressor Fleet
the Facebook page 7 Tom s reply the next day Global Whales for the first question and it s irrelevant for the second 8 I was traveling for a few days after that I sent a follow up to Tom on 9 April noting that the Global Whales Facebook page has my name and link associated with all my whale photos I also explained my reason for asking the name of the well known photographer friend who sent him my photos namely fact checking so I can better clarify try to understand what actually happened Global Whales Facebook page my name and public Facebook page clearly stated Global Whales photo detail my name and URL clearly stated Follow up email to Tom As of this writing I have not received a response To be fair Tom is traveling I know how difficult it can be to deal with emails while traveling Trying to Make Sense of it All It s all a bit confusing isn t it Best I can tell Tom obtained my images via an undisclosed person s He downloaded my photos from the Global Whales Facebook page which clearly states the photos are mine There is no watermark on the actual photos as Tom correctly states Global Whales took the photos from somewhere else Some unknown person cropped my watermark out of my photos Never ending chain of photo theft Tom emailed the downloaded photos to Werner Somehow he forgot to mention the source of the photos or to say that the images belong to me as stated on the Global Whales Facebook page He described the photos with language that was both vague and inconsistent initially saying that a friend sent him the photos Then saying it was a friend of a friend whom he did not know Then a Facebook Page And finally in an email to me that it was a well known photographer friend of his who is also a friend of mine Also in his 31 March email to me Tom s description of the text in his initial email to Werner is A friend of a friend of mine was in Sri Lanka about a month ago and he sent me these pics attached This differs from the version of the text I received from Werner of that very same communication which reads A friend of mine was in Sri Lanka about a month ago and he sent me these pics attached I can see how Werner could be confused I am Unfortunately as of now Tom has declined doing the one thing that would make it super easy to clarify Namely put me in touch with the person whom he says is a friend of mine and sent him the photos and or link So what exactly happened remains unclear One statement Tom made to Werner is instructive however Sounds pretty bad but as far as I know images on the web not HR originals and not copyrighted published on Facebook and other social media sites are fair game no The most charitable conclusion I can draw is that such a misguided mentality is at the heart of this and perhaps many other problems related to theft of intellectual property No Tom They are not fair game No more than if I were to find your mobile phone on a counter at a bar I couldn t just take it and give it to a friend claiming that it s fair game then get pissed off when I was confronted griping that This crap bugs me and this is what I get when trying to be nice and help people I am not naive I know people steal photos posted online Mine get stolen all the time That s never going to stop I am certain you had no intention to steal you just considered the photos fair game And by all accounts there is no indication that you suggested to Werner that he use my photos in his ad But really I d expect more professional behaviour and clearer communication from the Aggressor Fleet You re not a fly by night operation Right As for Werner he s a professional photographer He should never have used my photos for his ad But after all that we ve discussed I can and do accept that he made a Bozo mistake without any bad intent Personally I would never use photos without knowing their provenance especially for a commercial purpose and doubly especially if they are unique photos like my whale images For clarity though if someone takes my photos and uses them without my knowledge the onus is not on me to seek them out and politely ask them to stop I can certainly choose to do so if I wish and I have done so many times but my property is my property If someone were to steal your car Werner the onus would not be on you to seek that person out and ask politely for the return of your automobile At this point I believe Werner is sincere in his apologies I have no idea what to make of Tom s confusing narrative or reluctance to put me in touch with the one person who could help clarify the chronology of events But whatever Here s the takeaway Do not appropriate photos for your own use especially commercial use without knowing exactly where they came from and being clear on usage rights Photos are not fair game especially when the Facebook page in question specifies both my name and my link Finally if you are one of the people who cancelled a trip with Werner as a response to this unfortunate turn of events please don t do so because you want to punish Werner The online response has delivered the message loud and clear to him He gets it I bear him no ill will You shouldn t either We all screw up One thing I

  • Sperm Whale Skeleton | LKC Natural History Museum Singapore
death of a whale is always sad but at least in this instance there is a chance for everyone to see the skeleton and perhaps learn a bit about the biology of these magnificent animals as well as the threats they face Threats What threats could such a large animal possibly face Well she was found with a large wound in her caudal area that s the rear end one that was consistent with an injury resulting from a run in with a ship The illuminated part of the tail that s visible in the photo above shows where the injury was I m not sure whether it was possible to determine that a collision was the cause of death but ship strikes happen often enough to whales around the world that it s a big problem Yes bigger than whaling If you re upset about the remnants of whaling you should be really concerned about ship strikes i e injuries and deaths of cetaceans and other marine life resulting from collisions with ships See my previous post about a blue whale most likely killed by a ship strike See also open access Evernote notebook I keep of news clippings related to cetacean ship strikes To add insult to fatal injury the necropsy revealed plastics inside Jubilee s gastrointestinal system pictured here Plastics plastics plastics Poisoning and murdering marine life everywhere In the grand scheme of things the amount of plastic found in her stomach wasn t a lot Other dead whales have been found with much much more But given that Jubilee was only 10 6m she may not have been fully grown meaning that had she survived she would likely have ingested yet more plastic as the years passed So if you live in Singapore or are passing

  • Cyamus ovalis Whale Lice | Right Whales
another species of related parasite because well whale lice just don t get the love and respect they deserve Meet Cyamus ovalis Cyamus ovalis resident on right whales License image This species is one of three that is known to live on right whales Eubalaena sp They congregrate all over rights but particularly on the whales callosities a k a big bumpy parts on their heads In fact populations of these parasites are so thick that they make the callosities visible and distinct So what you might ask Well first there are so many that it s kinda gross when you see them up close think gross in the same enthralled manner a five year old kid says oooooooo grooooooooosssssss when confronted with a slithering mass of earthworms And second patterns of callosities are just different enough that they can be used to ID individual whales These parasites being lightly coloured make it easy to discern callosity shapes sizes and arrangements from a distance and certainly in photos and video If you click and take a look at the photo I posted of Cyamus scammoni you ll see that both species share a similar body plan Not surprising really Cyamus ovalis above is smaller and less hefty than the gray whale parasite in the photo I posted last week but that s just by chance Cyamus ovalis can get pretty chunky and sumo esque too Below is the same whale louse on my hand for scale probably the only hand modeling gig I ll ever get Cyamus ovalis on my hand for scale License image Photographic note Taking these photos was a joint effort involving Jean s D4 105mm macro lens and a Nikon flash SB 800 I think my creation of a makeshift studio using kitchen counter multiple towels
