legitimised the charade of weapons of mass destruction as well as nonsense such as that which cast Blair as a moderating influence on Bush when as we now know they are almost identical warmongers Who can forget the BBC s exultant Chief Political Correspondent Andrew Marr at the moment of coalition triumph Tony Blair he declared said that they would take Baghdad without a blood bath and that in the end the Iraqis would be celebrating And on both those points he has been conclusively proved right If you replace right with wrong you have the truth To the BBC s man in Downing Street up to 40 000 deaths apparently does not constitute a blood bath According to the independent American survey organisation Media Tenor the BBC allowed less dissent against the war than all the leading international broadcasters surveyed including the American networks Andrew Gilligan the BBC reporter who revealed Dr David Kelly s concerns about the government s dodgy dossier on Iraq is one of the very few mavericks an inconvenient breed who challenge official truth One of the most important lies was linking the regime of Saddam Hussein with al Qaeda As we now know both Bush and Blair ignored the advice of their intelligence agencies and made the connection public It worked When the attack on Iraq began polls showed that most Americans believed Saddam Hussein was behind September 11 The opposite was true Monstrous though it was Saddam Hussein s regime was a veritable bastion against al Qaeda and its Islamic fanaticism Saddam was the West s man who was armed to the teeth by America and Britain in the 1980s because he had oil and a lot of money and because he was an enemy of anti Western mullahs in Iran and elsewhere in the region Saddam and Osama bin Laden loathed each other His grave mistake was invading Kuwait in 1990 Kuwait is an Anglo American protectorate part of the Western oil empire in the Middle East The killings in the UN compound in Baghdad this week like the killing of thousands of others in Iraq form a trail of blood that leads to Bush and Blair and their courtiers It was obvious to millions of people all over the world that if the Americans and British attacked Iraq then the fictional link between Iraq and Islamic terrorism could well become fact The brutality of the occupation of Iraq in which children are shot or arrested by the Americans and countless people have disappeared in concentration camps is an open invitation to those who now see Iraq as part of a holy jihad When I travelled the length of Iraq several years ago I felt completely safe I was received everywhere with generosity and grace even though I was from a country whose government was bombing and besieging my hosts Bush s and Blair s court suppressed the truth that most Iraqis both opposed Saddam Hussein and the invasion of their country

capital gains dividends and again the top tax rate Next year the sunset provisions in these measures will be removed Quite soon taxes will fall mainly on real estate payrolls and current consumption Which is to say that taxes will be paid mostly by the middle class by the working class and by the poor As financial wealth escapes tax neither states nor cities nor the federal government can provide vital services except by taxing sales and property at rates that will provoke tax rebellions Every public service will fall between the hammer of tax cuts and the anvil of deficits in state local and federal budgets The streets will be dirtier so will the air and the water Emergency rooms will back up even more than they have more doctors will refuse public patients More fire houses and swimming pools and libraries will be closed Public universities will cost more the public schools will lose the middle class Eventually federal budget deficits will collide with Social Security and Medicare putting privatization back on the agenda I am from Texas where you can see this future happening now We need to talk about the world outside To the men in charge it appears that the world outside is not really a partner or an ally It is mainly a supplier Cheap labor and cheap oil I want to stop short of saying that we went to Iraq for the oil We don t know that But we do know that when we got there we found that the oil was there and the weapons of mass destruction were not The fact is we are acquiring an empire But the men in charge do not want to pay for it They have no serious interest in providing security infrastructure or civil administration to the territories they have conquered And indeed none of these things are being provided Yet the burdens of empire can only grow as time passes Sooner or later we will have to choose between leaving our conquered territories or putting in the full force required to control them One way we lose control while the other can only add to the miseries of our balance of payments How can the cost be met especially if the coin of our realm the U S dollar is at the same time losing its position It won t be easy The problem of empires historically is not military defeat It is bankruptcy Empires do not tend to business at home and they tend to lose out to rivals who do As once with Britain and America so now with America and Europe That could be how it will turn out Do we want this Much as we may admire and like our European friends I don t think we do There is irony here for America s wealthy While Bush may leave them untaxed he will not leave them rich as they were Already their stocks are off by trillions Soon

into the White House due to the Supreme Court s purloining of the 2000 election writes Gore the nation had previously enjoyed a number of quietly corrupt elections decently kept from public view He referred to 1888 when Grover Cleveland s plurality was canceled by the Electoral College s maneuverings and 1876 when Democrat Samuel Tilden had a quarter million more votes than the Republican Rutherford B Hayes but a Congressionally selected commission gave the victory to Hayes by a single vote Gore Eugene Luther Vidal who lives in Italy but was contacted by NCR when he was recently in the United States was born in 1925 at West Point where his father was an instructor He graduated from Philips Exeter Academy served on an Army supply ship in Alaska in World War II and published his first novel Willawaw to quote one account at 19 while still in U S Army uniform He grew up with the Army and served in the military yet he unabashedly regards war as the ultimate no win all lose option He writes Fifty years ago Feb 27 1947 Republican Sen Arthur Vandenberg told President Harry S Truman he could have his militarized economy only if he first scared the hell out of the American people that the Russians were coming Truman obliged The perpetual war began Vidal continues We are now faced with a Japanese seventh century style arrangement a powerless Mikado ruled by a shogun vice president and his Pentagon warrior counselors Do they dream as did the shoguns of yore of the conquest of China Sept 11 Vidal writes transformed Bush into the cheerleader he had been in prep school He promised us not only a new war but a secret war and best of all according to the twinkle in his eye a very long war Continued Vidal President James Madison warned us at the dawn of our republic Of all enemies to public liberty war is perhaps the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops germs of every other Vidal sees other comparisons with the past The founding fathers had such a fear and loathing of democracy that they invented the Electoral College so the popular voice of the people could be throttled much as the Supreme Court throttled Floridians on Dec 12 2000 where Bush was entrusting his endangered Florida vote to the state s governor his brother Jeb Historian Vidal was asked if there was a point in U S history when the democracy functioned He replied Before Polk s 1846 war with Mexico in order to acquire California General then Lieutenant Grant said that the Civil War was the vengeance of God upon us for what we had done to Mexico These two books signal more than Vidal at the top of his form as a thunderer however In listing his collected writings Vidal refers to the slim volumes as pamphlets It is a distinction with a subtle warning The pamphleteer is the point

medical risk In the CSM article it quotes an American soldier as saying ìAfter we shoot something with DU we re not supposed to go around it due to the fact that it could cause cancer says a sergeant in Baghdad from New York assigned to a Bradley who asked not to be further identified This poisonous reality in Iraq is also serving to ferment further hostility by the Iraqis towards their occupiers The first Bush clan war against Iraq named the Gulf War produced over 161 000 U S casualties which have been effectively hushed up by the Department of Defense DoD and their prostitutes in the general media That is how many Gulf War veterans are receiving disability payments for what is known as Gulf War Syndrome GWS from the U S government There still is controversy on what was the direct cause for so many casualties to Gulf War veterans Dr Rosalie Bertell outlines the possible causes for GWS Use this link to see complete list Administration of three vaccines intended as protection against nerve and biological warfare agents These were 1 Pyridostigmine normally prescribed for myasthenia gravis and known to have serious side effects especially when the person taking it is exposed to heat It is also known that exposure to pesticides and insecticides Baygon Diazinon and Sevin should be avoided when taking pyridostigmine because they can accentuate its toxicity Some women who took this drug during pregnancy and have breast fed infants have seen side effects in their child 2 Botulinum Pentavalent an unproven vaccine intended to counteract botulism It is unlicensed in the United States 3 Anthrax to protect against the disease anthrax This was apparently selectively administered to troops during the war and women receiving it were warned not to have children for three or four years Depleted uranium was used for the first time in this war It was incorporated into tank armor missile and aircraft counterweights and navigational devices and in tank anti aircraft and anti personnel artillery The scientific information on this deadly chemical has been reported in Radium Osteitis With Osteogenic Sarcoma The Chronology and Natural History of Fatal Cases by Dr William D Sharpe Bulletin of the New York Academy of Medicine Vol 47 No 9 September 1971 There was no excuse for this human experimentation because the effects of this exposure were known Destruction by allies of Iraqi chemical nerve and biological warfare weapons resulting in widespread distribution of these toxins in the environment This problem has now been at least in part documented by the U S Department of Defense They are focusing on this potential cause as if it were the only candidate cause The purveyors of weapons of mass destruction in Washington also used DU in Kosovo and Bosnia where NATO troops have been demanding to leave as far back as two years ago because many are becoming sick with cancer and other illnesses attributed to DU contamination In Southern Iraq one viscous outcome

a few token breaks for the middle class would generate maximum deficits but minimum stimulus They may tell him it was a shallow recession but the long term unemployed won t agree And the fact that even with all that red ink the recovery is still jobless should lead him to wonder whether he s running the wrong kind of deficits Instead however he s decided to plead with the Chinese for help Admittedly it didn t sound like pleading It sounded as if he was being tough We expect there to be a fair playing field when it comes to trade And we intend to keep the rules fair Everyone understood this to be a reference to the yuan China s supposedly undervalued currency which some business groups claim is a major problem for American companies By the way even if the Chinese did accede to U S demands to increase the value of the yuan it wouldn t have much effect unless it was a huge revaluation And China won t agree to a huge revaluation because its huge trade surplus with the U S is largely offset by trade deficits with other countries Still even a modest currency shift by Beijing would allow Mr Bush to say that he was doing something about the loss of manufacturing jobs other than appointing a jobs czar And so John Snow the Treasury secretary went off to Beijing to request an increase in the yuan s value But he got no satisfaction A quick look at the situation reveals one reason why the U S currently has very little leverage over China Mr Bush needs China s help to deal with North Korea another crisis that was allowed to fester while the administration focused on Iraq Furthermore purchases of Treasury bills by China s central bank are one of the main ways the U S finances its trade deficit Nobody is quite sure what would happen if the Chinese suddenly switched to say euros a two point jump in mortgage rates but it s not an experiment anyone wants to try There may also be another reason The Chinese remember very well that in Mr Bush s first few months in office his officials described China as a strategic competitor indeed they seemed to be seeking a new cold war until terrorism came along as a better issue So Mr Bush may find it as hard to get help from China as from the nations those same officials ridiculed as old Europe Sic transit and all that Just four months after Operation Flight Suit the superpower has become a supplicant to nations it used to insult Mission accomplished Fair Use Notice This site contains copyrighted material the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by the copyright owner We are making such material available in our efforts to advance understanding of environmental political economic democratic domestic and international issues etc We believe this constitutes a fair use of
