the Christian Science Monitor last spring reported an estimated 75 tons of the metal was used by the U S Air Force last winter and remains scattered on the ground the military has posted signs in some places warning people to stay away from destroyed targets Subsequent statements by the British and American militaries lead independent analysts to estimate that 100 to 150 metric tons of DU was used in the Iraq War The congressmen drawing on research prepared by Fahey have asked the GAO to study whether DU can be linked to cancers and other diseases among Iraq and Persian Gulf War veterans Before the Iraq War Fahey unsuccessfully tried to persuade the VA to independently study these same issues DoD s own laboratory studies confirm DU may cause cancer tumors neurological damage and reproductive effects but the possible connection between DU and disease development in the vast majority of exposed veterans remains unexamined and therefore unknown the congressmen¹s letter said This is of particular concern because it is now almost 13 years since the war and the latency period for the development of many cancers possibly related to DU is 10 to 30 years They cited Fahey s belief that the Pentagon officials have made false statements about the existence of a rare Hodgkin s lymphoma and a bone tumor among veterans in the DU Program signaling a breakdown in the integrity of the study On at least two occasions in 2001 DoD spokesmen falsely claimed that no veterans in the DU Program had developed cancer in an apparent attempt to dampen controversy in Europe about the use of DU munitions in the Balkans they wrote In addition in April 2003 an Army doctor was quoted in press stories falsely claiming that no veterans in the DU Program had developed any tumors These prevarications beg the question of whether other health effects have been observed among these veterans but not reported That army doctor was Dr Michael Kilpatrick of the Office of the Special Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs who is among the top raking Pentagon officials who create military health policy Those remarks were made at a NATO briefing The congressman also noted that the Pentagon previously misled GAO investigators and the Department of Veterans Affairs about the extent of veterans exposures to DU during the 1991 war and said there was cause for concern that DoD is not providing complete and accurate information about DU exposures in Iraq Fahey said this pattern of repressing information continues to this day The VA is failing in its duty to assist veterans exposed to a known carcinogen on the battlefield but sadly it appears that the Pentagon is calling the shots when it comes to DU policy Fahey said Even now as our troops continue to fight and die in Iraq the Pentagon refuses to disclose information about its use of DU or release information to the United Nations Environment Programme about the quantities and locations of

China that it would not permit a military attack on the island This situation has prevailed down to the present China has continued to insist that it wants reunification and on occasion has threatened military action most recently in 1997 when the Chinese military launched guided missiles into the shipping lanes to and from the ports on the northern and southern ends of Taiwan At that time President Clinton responded by sending U S Navy subs and aircraft carriers to the Taiwan Strait a 100 mile wide waterway that separates Taiwan from the Asian mainland making it clear that the U S would intervene if China attempted to attack The current crisis has seen a much different response however Facing an election in March Taiwan s President Chen has been promoting the idea of an island wide referendum in 2004 The issue not independence from China but simply whether to call on China to stop pointing missiles at Taiwan That might seem a pretty reasonable and benign request for the people of Taiwan to make through the ballot box Indeed it s a lot less belligerent than the threat of World War III that President John Kennedy made to Cuba and the Soviet Union when the USSR began placing missiles in Cuba pointed at this country But our avowedly pro democracy president George Bush the man who purports to be so enamored of freedom that he was willing in promoting it to invade a country and commit 150 000 U S troops to a war whose end no one can predict was having none of it With China s new premier Wen Jiabao a Communist proponent of dictatorial rule standing at his side Bush warned President Chen not to push the referendum idea or to try to change the status quo Referendums it seems are appropriate for Californians not for Taiwanese or Chinese It was a major slapdown of Taiwan s democrats and in fact represents a big change in the status quo itself Self determination is a fundamental right of all people and the people of Taiwan who have not been a part of China for many many generations have a right to determine their own destiny including the right to decide that they prefer independence to forced subjugation to and incorporation into a fascist regime and country One would think to hear our president talk about the joys of freedom and democracy that this is something the White House and the ruling Republican Party could get behind but no They and their corporate sponsors are so busy making money in China and shifting American jobs to the Chinese mainland that they don t want any problems from an island of 23 million people The irony is that with any luck Taiwan could represent the real future for China While it s hard to imagine at the moment Taiwan could well be the model for China s eventual transition to a free and democratic society For thousands of years

arrested Antoine Banna the Cornell trained dean but soon released him Much the same result followed a probe of avian virus research at the Ghazi Institute It was legitimate research but if they wanted to swing the other way they had some of the wherewithal to do that said an analyst apprised of the results When investigators paid a call on Noria Ali a genetic engineer who wears the head cover and long robes of an observant Muslim they said they knew there was genetic research on these viruses and we had secret labs for this work Ali said Ali acknowledged a history that attracted suspicion In 1990 she said Rihab Taha ordered her to build a genetic engineering lab at Iraq s principal bioweapons research center The Special Security Organization warned her that any person who talks about his work will be executed Ali said But Iraq s invasion of Kuwait left the lab unfinished an account confirmed by U S and European experts We could have done a lot in this lab but the fact is that this lab never existed Ali said The survey group s most exotic line of investigation sought evidence that Iraq tried to create a pathogen combining pox virus with cobra venom A 1986 study in the Journal of Microbiology reported that fowlpox spread faster and killed more chickens in the presence of venom extract Investigators received a secondhand report that Iraq sought to splice them together Such an artificial life form created by inserting genetic sequences from one organism into another is called a chimera after the fire breathing monster of Greek mythology commingling lion serpent and goat They have asked about developing some kind of chimera a pox with snake venom gene said Ali Zaag dean of the university s Institute for Biotechnology You have seen our labs For us these capabilities are science fiction Investigators also searched for what one of them termed starter sets of pathogens laboratory samples that could be used for later production For each suspected weapon the investigators carried a supply of labeled antibodies a classified technology used in field kits that resemble home pregnancy tests We didn t find anything so certainly not anything engineered a coalition scientist said Team Pox as the group of investigators dubbed itself eventually dropped the chimera investigation You ve got to learn to walk before you start running said a European government scientist who studied Iraq s biological programs last year The evidence we have about the virus program is they hadn t started to walk yet Recently Zaag said the chimera hunt resumed This time the investigators are intelligence officers Their approach Zaag said is We ll give you a few more days to reveal something and then we ll have to take you Spokesmen for the CIA and the Defense Intelligence Agency declined requests for interviews What the Traitor Knew Late last month fresh evidence emerged on a very old question about Iraq s illegal arms Did the Baghdad government as it said rid itself of all the biological arms it produced before 1991 The answer matters because the Bush administration s most concrete prewar assertions about Iraqi germ weapons referred to stocks allegedly hidden from that old arsenal The new evidence appears to be a contemporary record from inside the Iraqi government of a pivotal moment in Baghdad s long struggle to shield arms programs from outside scrutiny The document written just after the defection of Saddam Hussein s son in law on Aug 8 1995 anticipates the collapse of cover stories for weapons that had yet to be disclosed Read alongside subsequent discoveries made by U N inspectors the document supports Iraq s claim that it destroyed all production stocks of lethal pathogens before inspectors knew they existed The defection of Hussein Kamel was a turning point in the U N imposed disarmament of Iraq in the 1990s Kamel who had married one of Saddam Hussein s daughters Raghad and controlled Baghdad s Military Industrial Commission told his Western debriefers about major programs in biological and nuclear weaponry that had gone undetected or unconfirmed Iraq was forced to acknowledge what he exposed but neither inspectors nor U S officials were sure Kamel had told all there was to tell A handwritten Iraqi damage report composed five days after the defection now suggests that Kamel left little or nothing out The author is Hossam Amin then and until his April 27 arrest the head of Iraq s National Monitoring Directorate As liaison to the inspectors he provided information and logistical support but he also concealed the government s remaining secrets Sufiyan Taha Mahmoud who was private secretary to Amin in 1995 said in an interview that Amin flew into a rage when he learned Kamel had slipped across the border to Jordan It was as if he was hit with a hammer Mahmoud said Five days later Amin dispatched a six page letter to the president s son Qusay The person who provided a copy to The Washington Post had postwar access to the presidential office where he said he found the original Iraqis who know Amin well and experienced government investigators from the United States and Europe who analyzed the document for this article said they believe it to be authentic They cited handwriting syntax contemporary details and annotations that match those of previous samples Markings on the letter say that Qusay read it summarized it for his father and filed it with presidential secretary Abed Hamid Mahmoud Just before his sudden and regrettable flight and surrender to the bosom of the enemy Amin wrote the traitor Hussein Kamel received a detailed briefing on the points of weakness and the points of strength in Iraq s concealment efforts Amin then listed in numbered points the matters that are known to the traitor and not declared to U N inspectors Inspectors knew Iraq tried to enrich uranium for a nuclear weapon but not Amin wrote about the crash program to fabricate a bomb with French reactor fuel by 1991 They knew Iraq made biological toxins but not that it put them in Scud missile warheads There were major facilities Dawrah Foot and Mouth Disease Institute a centrifuge factory in Rashdiya and the Al Atheer bomb fabrication plant whose true purposes were unacknowledged to inspectors Shortly after Amin sent the letter Kamel s debriefings and subsequent inspections exposed every item in Amin s catalogue Until now Kamel s debriefers suspected that maybe he decided to keep something for himself said Ali Shukri a Jordanian military officer who debriefed Kamel on behalf of the late King Hussein speaking in an interview in Amman After reading Amin s letter in silence and then rereading it Shukri looked up and said Kamel had held back nothing The most significant point in Amin s letter U S and European experts said is his unambiguous report that Iraq destroyed its entire inventory of biological weapons Amin reminded Qusay Hussein of the government s claim that it possessed no such arms after 1990 then wrote that in truth destruction of the biological weapons agents took place in the summer of 1991 It was those weapons to which Secretary of State Colin L Powell referred in the Security Council on Feb 5 when he said for example that Iraq still had an estimated 8 500 to 25 000 liters of anthrax bacteria Some things Amin s letter did not say may also be meaningful If Iraq had succeeded in spray drying anthrax spores to extend their life and lethality that would have been among the most important secrets of its wide ranging weapons program The letter did not speak of it The letter also enumerated Baghdad s nuclear secrets but mentioned nothing to suggest Iraq manufactured unknown parts of an implosion device to detonate uranium There was only one important thing Amin said that Hussein Kamel did not know some of the locations where Iraq hid its library of arms research That supports long standing suspicions that Iraq held back portions of a knowledge base that could speed revival of development and production one day A U S intelligence official who was provided with a copy of Amin s letter for comment said the government would not discuss it in detail He said an initial check of records suggests that we have not previously seen the letter Without the original and an account of its origins he said government analysts cannot verify the authenticity of the letter He added It is plausible and from a quick scan of it presents no immediate surprises The Stupid Army Thair Anwar Masraf an affable project engineer made an appointment last summer to see an investigator from David Kay s survey group He had information he said in an interview that might help the Americans interpret two trailer mounted production plants found near Mosul in April and May I waited more than one hour in the Palestine Hotel Masraf said He did not show up Masraf watched with curiosity in coming months as the Bush administration touted its discovery of mobile germ weapon factories A joint study released May 28 by the CIA and Defense Intelligence Agency called the trailers the strongest evidence to date that Iraq was hiding a biological warfare program Two days later in Poland President Bush announced For those who say we haven t found the banned manufacturing devices or banned weapons they re wrong We found them When Iraqi engineers told investigators that the discovered trailers were meant for hydrogen the CIA dismissed the cover story By July with contrary evidence piling up Kay described the trailer episode as a fiasco He told BBC Television which broadcast the tape Nov 23 I think it was premature and embarrassing Even so Kay s October report to Congress left the question unresolved Kay said he could not corroborate a mobile germ factory but he restated the CIA argument that the trailers were not ideally suited for hydrogen Had Masraf found Kay s investigator at the Palestine Hotel he said he would have explained that Iraq actually used such trailers to generate hydrogen during the eight year war with Iran Masraf and his former supervisor at the Saad Co said Masraf managed a contract to refurbish some of the units beginning in 1997 According to the two men Iraq bought mobile hydrogen generators from Britain in 1982 and mounted them on trucks The Republican Guard used one type Iraq s 2nd Army Corps another Iraqi artillery units relied on hydrogen filled weather balloons to measure wind and temperature which affect targeting Munqith Qaisi then a senior manager at Saad Co and now its American appointed director general said the trailers used a chemical not biological process to make hydrogen from methanol and demineralized water The feature that analysts found most suspicious in May the compression and recapture of exhaust gases is a necessity Masraf said when gas is the intended product In the late 1990s the Republican Guard sent some of its trailers for refurbishment at the Kindi Co The 2nd Army Corps signed a similar contract with Saad Co Masraf said the first units were finished in 2001 including the two discovered by coalition forces around Mosul Qaisi s account may also clear up an unexplained detail from the May 28 intelligence report traces of urea in the reaction vessel aboard one of the trailers Qaisi said the vessels corroded badly because Iraqi troops disregarded strict orders to use only demineralized water The stupid army pissed in it or used river water he said Said s Last Experiment On Thursday Dec 11 a rumpled man with a high balding crown arrived late for work at the University of Technology In his unpainted office about the size of a family sedan electrical fixtures drooped from cement walls Sabah Abdul Noor once moved among the nation s elites He played a part in the most ambitious undertaking of Iraqi industrial science creation from scratch and largely in secret of the wherewithal to design and manufacture an atomic bomb When the 1991 Gulf War intervened an Iraqi bomb was informed estimates vary six months to two years from completion Abdul Noor watched as that multibillion dollar enterprise was reduced to slag under the cutting torches of U N inspectors who arrived under Security Council mandate after Iraq s defeat in Kuwait Since the fall of Saddam Hussein Abdul Noor said U S forces have been questioning him for indications that the nuclear program was secretly revived I have just come from such an interview he said apologizing for the hour They didn t give names They did not say where they were from I am kept as long as they wish to keep me What the Americans want to talk about almost always is Khalid Ibrahim Said Until 1991 Said was going to be the man who built Iraq s atomic bomb Other leading figures were responsible for uranium enrichment Said led the team PC 3 Group 4 in Iraq s cryptic organization chart that would form 40 pounds of uranium into a working nuclear device Abdul Noor was Said s powder metallurgist Said died on April 8 when Marines opened fire on his moving car near a newly established checkpoint His loss grieved Kay s nuclear investigators who had many questions for him When they came across Said s last experiment the late bomb designer moved to the center of their probe Said spent his final days in a warehouse filled with capacitors and powerful magnets He and his team were building what they described in a mandatory disclosure to the International Atomic Energy Agency as a linear engine The purpose Iraq declared was air defense The machine in Said s warehouse was more commonly known as a rail gun It used electromagnetic pulses to accelerate a small object to very high speed When U S investigators arrived they found the gun had been shooting an aluminum projectile at an aluminum target plate like the skin of an airplane said an analyst who reviewed their report But rail gun technology is thought to be decades from use in a practical weapon and investigators believed Said might have something else in mind Impact of an extremely high velocity projectile in a target chamber they said might be used to measure the behavior of materials under pressures that compare to a nuclear implosion Such equation of state experiments as physicists call them could be applied to nuclear warhead design When the U S nuclear team looked closely at that question however it saw no evidence of equation of state work with the rail gun according to an authoritative summary of the team s report A sad look crossed Abdul Noor s face when he tried to explain his bafflement at suspicions that Iraq had secretly rebuilt reconstituted as the Bush administration put it in the summer and fall of 2002 a nuclear weapons program He and his colleagues still know what they learned Abdul Noor said but their material condition is incomparably worse than it was when they began in 1987 We would have had to start from less than zero he said with thousands of irreplaceable tools banned from import The country was cornered he said We were boycotted We were embargoed The truth is we disintegrated Of his late friend Said Abdul Noor said I don t know what was in his heart Probably he wanted to return to nuclear weapons work one day That is in the category of dreams A common view among investigators today is that Said had the motive but not the means One Western physicist who knew Said well said the rail gun enabled Said to maintain his team and hone their skills on diagnostics flash X ray cameras measuring very high speeds and measuring impacts of ramming things together The physicist added It s basic science There s no relation to actual bomb design and fabrication Some investigators have yet to be convinced They continue to look for warhead research in the guise of the rail gun Today they were asking me that again Abdul Noor said I was not on the same wavelength I could see they were not pleased with me Red on Red on Blue There is another explanation for the rail gun according to one man who worked on it and does not want to be named It was he said a deception operation against Saddam Hussein Hussein resented U S air patrols over no fly zones where Iraqi aircraft were forbidden in northern and southern Iraq After trying for years to challenge the patrols another Iraqi said we had yet to scratch the wing of one American F 15 Said gave the president an answer involving futuristic technology He was a good enough applied physicist to understand the long odds against success Said s anonymous colleague said but the project earned him favor prestige and a substantial budget In every field of special weaponry Iraqi designers and foreign investigators said such deceit was endemic Program managers promised more than they could deliver or things they could not deliver at all to advance careers preserve jobs or conduct intrigues against rivals Sometimes they did so from ignorance failing to grasp the challenges they took on Lying to an absolute ruler was hazardous Iraqi weaponeers said but less so in some cases than the alternatives No one will tell Saddam Hussein to his face I can t do this said an Iraqi brigadier general who supervised work on some of the technologies used in the rail gun David Kay s survey group has turned up other such cases Analysts are calling the phenomenon red on red deception after the U S practice of using red to stand for enemy forces and blue to stand for friendly ones In some cases they said red on red amounted to red

the number of injured troops The sharp increase in the number of US wounded in the autumn the official number of combat wounded alone averaged nearly 100 a week between mid September and mid November lunaville org made the reluctance of the military to provide figures increasingly problematic Even the servile US media was beginning to request figures Still the Pentagon officialdom put up as much resistance as it could In September 2003 the Post itself noted Although Central Command keeps a running total of the wounded it releases the number only when asked making the combat injuries of US troops in Iraq one of the untold stories in the war Sen Bob Graham of Florida one time candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination and ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee declared around the same time that he wanted to know how many US soldiers had been wounded in Iraq but had been unable to find out because the administration would not release the information An article in the October 13 New Republic by Lawrence F Kaplan noted Pentagon officials have rebuked public affairs officers who release casualty figures and until recently US Central Command did not regularly publicize the injured total either Ten days later however E P Online commented Current injury statistics were easily obtained through US Central Command and the Pentagon so getting the numbers is no longer a problem In that same New Republic piece Kaplan discussed the state of many injured soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center He pointed out that modern medical technique meant that a far higher percentage of wounded soldiers now survived who would have died in previous wars The use of Kevlar body armor had also reduced deaths The result however was that many of the wounded were left with debilitating injuries particularly amputated limbs Because of the higher survival rate information about the seriously wounded is essential to any accurate picture of the Iraq war Kaplan wrote The near invisibility of the wounded has several sources The media has always treated combat deaths as the most reliable measure of battlefield progress while for its part the administration has been reluctant to divulge the full number of wounded The number of combat injuries however is far from the whole story That leaves out the thousands who have become physically or mentally ill in Iraq As noted above estimates of the real number of US servicemen and women evacuated from Iraq by the end of 2003 vary widely The British Observer newspaper asserted September 14 that the true scale of American casualties in Iraq is revealed today by new figures which show that more than 6 000 American servicemen have been evacuated for medical reasons since the beginning of the war including more than 1 500 American soldiers who have been wounded many seriously The figures will shock many Americans who believe that casualties in the war in Iraq have been relatively light By the end of November Roger Roy

of many months The same holds true now The foundation of the impeachment or the scandal that will prompt a regime change was laid in a March 17 letter written by California Congressman Henry Waxman who has been dogging the Bush administration on its violations of law since it took office Waxman s first battle was over the refusal of the administration to release the mostly still secret records of Vice President Cheney s 2001 Energy Task Force It is there that some of the biggest secrets of 9 11 lay buried With respect to the Iraqi invasion using the record of official statements made by Bush Cheney Rumsfeld and Powel Waxman has already laid out and won the prima facie case that the administration has lied deceived the public and broken the public trust There can be no defense against this record once it gets into a legal proceeding Read the full text of Waxman s March letter This web page details Waxman s meticulous compilation of evidence and from a legal as opposed to political standpoint is no doubt the core of any future impeachment case against Bush It is damning and Waxman has diligently continued to build brick by brick the wall into which the administration could soon crash An important historical novelty here is that Waxman s compilation of irrefutable criminal activity also guarantees that if Bush goes so do Cheney Rumsfeld and Powell What then Rebellion From Inside the Beltway On June 26 a twenty seven year CIA veteran analyst tied the pieces together and made it clear that Bush is fighting a battle he cannot win Just as it was with Nixon the intelligence agencies have turned against him Ray McGovern affiliated with the watchdog group Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity VIPS has been out front with criticisms of the Bush administration s abuse of intelligence procedures for some time However in his interview with William Rivers Pitt writing for Truthout org McGovern took Waxman s work several steps further He was also critical of CIA Director George Tenet s endorsements of intelligence abuses by Powell Cheney and Bush yet he did not mention that Tenet had left a paper record showing that the CIA had never trusted the forged Niger documents that the administration still even after warnings sold to the public and to the world as authentic McGovern also let Tenet off the hook for the biggest crime of the administration allowing and facilitating the attacks of 9 11 saying My analysis is that George Bush had no option but to keep George Tenet on as Director because George Tenet had warned Bush repeatedly for months and months before September 11 that something very bad was about to happen Even still McGovern let the Bush administration know that its conduct before the attacks was a sword of Damocles hanging over Bush s head On August 6 the title of the Presidential briefing was Bin Laden Determined to Strike in the US and that briefing had the word Hijacking in it That s all I know about it but that s quite enough In September Bush had to make a decision Is it feasible to let go of Tenet whose agency flubbed the dub on this one And the answer was no because Tenet knows too much about what Bush knew and Bush didn t know what to do about it That s the bottom line for me I disagree with McGovern there is a record showing that the CIA knew about 9 11 but otherwise McGovern s analysis matched perfectly with FTW s of three months ago Here are some excerpts In the coming weeks we re going to be seeing folks coming out and coming forth with what they know and it is going to be very embarrassing for the Bush administration To be quite complete on this it encourages me that the analysts at the Defense Intelligence Agency who share this ethic of trying to tell the truth even though they are under much greater pressure and have much less career protection because they work for Rumsfeld to their great credit in September of last year they put out a memo saying there is no reliable evidence to suggest that the Iraqis have biological or chemical weapons or that they are producing them They looked around after Labor Day and said OK if we re going to have this war we really need to persuade Congress to vote for it How are we going to do that Well let s do the al Qaeda Iraq connection That s the traumatic one 9 11 is still a traumatic thing for most Americans Let s do that But then they said Oh damn those folks at CIA don t buy that they say there s no evidence and we can t bring them around We ve tried every which way and they won t relent That won t work because if we try that Congress is going to have these CIA wimps come down and the next day they ll undercut us How about these chemical and biological weapons We know they don t have any nuclear weapons so how about the chemical and biological stuff Well damn We have these other wimps at the Defense Intelligence Agency and dammit they won t come around either They say there s no reliable evidence of that so if we go up to Congress with that the next day they ll call the DIA folks in and the DIA folks will undercut us So they said What have we got We ve got those aluminum tubes The aluminum tubes you will remember were something that came out in late September the 24th of September The British and we front paged it These were aluminum tubes that were said by Condoleezza Rice as soon as the report came out to be only suitable for use in a nuclear application This is hardware that they had the dimensions of So they got that report and the British played it up and we played it up It was front page in the New York Times Condoleezza Rice said Ah ha These aluminum tubes are suitable only for uranium enrichment centrifuges Then they gave the tubes to the Department of Energy labs and to a person each one of those nuclear scientists and engineers said Well if Iraq thinks it can use these dimensions and these specifications of aluminum tubes to build a nuclear program let em do it Let em do it It ll never work and we can t believe they are so stupid These must be for conventional rockets And of course that s what they were for and that s what the UN determined they were for So after Condoleezza Rice s initial foray into this scientific area they knew that they couldn t make that stick either So what else did they have Well somebody said How about those reports earlier this year that Iraq was trying to get Uranium from Niger Yeah that was pretty good But of course if George Tenet were there he would have said But we looked at the evidence and they re forgeries they stink to high heaven So the question became How long would it take for someone to find out they were forgeries The answer was about a day or two The next question was When do we have to show people this stuff The answer was that the IAEA had been after us for a couple of months now to give it to them but we can probably put them off for three or four months So there it was What s the problem We ll take these reports we ll use them to brief Congress and to raise the specter of a mushroom cloud You ll recall that the President on the 7th of October said Our smoking gun could come in the form of a mushroom cloud Condoleezza Rice said exactly the same thing the next day Victoria Clarke said exactly the same thing on the 9th of October and of course the vote came on the 11th of October The most important and clear cut scandal of course has to do with the forgery of those Niger nuclear documents that were used as proof The very cold calculation was that Congress could be deceived we could have our war we could win it and then no one would care that part of the evidence for war was forged That may still prove to be the case but the most encouraging thing I ve seen over the last four weeks now is that the US press has sort of woken from its slumber and is interested I ve asked people in the press how they account for their lack of interest before the war and now they seem to be interested I guess the simple answer is that they don t like to be lied to I think the real difference is that no one knew or very few people knew before the war that there weren t any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq Now they know It s an unavoidable fact No one likes to be conned no one likes to be lied to and no one particularly likes that 190 US servicemen and women have been killed in this effort not to mention the five or six thousand Iraqi civilians There s a difference in tone If the press does not succumb to the argument put out by folks like Tom Friedman who says it doesn t really matter that there are no weapons in Iraq if it does become a quagmire which I believe it will be and we have a few servicemen killed every week then there is a prospect that the American people will wake up and say Tell me again why my son was killed Why did we have to make this war on Iraq So I do think that there is some hope now that the truth will come out It won t come out through the Congressional committees That s really a joke a sick joke It doesn t take a crackerjack analyst Take Pat Roberts the Republican Senator from Kansas who is chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee When the Niger forgery was unearthed and when Colin Powell admitted well shucks it was a forgery Senator Jay Rockefeller the ranking Democrat on that committee went to Pat Roberts and said they really needed the FBI to take a look at this After all this was known to be a forgery and was still used on Congressmen and Senators We d better get the Bureau in on this Pat Roberts said no that would be inappropriate So Rockefeller drafted his own letter and went back to Roberts and said he was going to send the letter to FBI Director Mueller and asked if Roberts would sign on to it Roberts said no that would be inappropriate What the FBI Director eventually got was a letter from one Minority member saying pretty please would you maybe take a look at what happened here because we think there may have been some skullduggery The answer he got from the Bureau was a brush off Why do I mention all that This is the same Pat Roberts who is going to lead the investigation into what happened with this issue All I m saying is that you ve got Porter Goss on the House side you ve got Pat Roberts on the Senate side you ve got John Warner who s a piece with Pat Roberts I m very reluctant to be so unequivocal but in this case I can say nothing is going to come out of those hearings but a lot of smoke What I m saying is that this needs to be investigated We know that it was Dick Cheney who sent the former US ambassador to Niger to investigate We know he was told in early March of last year that the documents were forgeries And yet these same documents were used in that application That is something that needs to be uncovered We need to pursue why the Vice President allowed that to happen To have global reporters like Walter Pincus quoting senior administration officials that Vice President Cheney was not told by CIA about the findings of this former US ambassador strains credulity well beyond the breaking point Cheney commissioned this trip and when the fellow came back he said Don t tell me I don t want to know what happened That s just ridiculous I strongly recommend a full reading of the McGovern interview at truthout org McGovern s reference to Walter Pincus echoes an observation made by FTW in March FTW has previously noted strong signals in the form of published remarks by powerful figures such as Senator Jay Rockefeller and news stories by media powerhouses such as James Risen and Walter Pincus that quiet moves were underway to remove the Bush administration from power In a harsh and stunning public statement to the BBC three days ago former Bush I Secretary of State and Henry Kissinger business partner Lawrence Eagleburger smacked ol W right between the eyes with a two by four The shocking April 14 Eagleburger statement revealed the depth of dissatisfaction in the real halls of power with the Bush team If George Bush Jr decided he was going to turn the troops loose on Syria and Iran after that he would last in office for about 15 minutes In fact if President Bush were to try that now even I would think that he ought to be impeached You can t get away with that sort of thing in this democracy The Military s Silent Mutiny A Full Scale Rebellion In his interview with Pitt retired CIA analyst McGovern hinted at what appears to be a growing but quiet dissent within the ranks of the US military at the totalitarian management style of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and the fact that the administration seems unconcerned with the facts He said To be quite complete on this it encourages me that the analysts at the Defense Intelligence Agency who share this ethic of trying to tell the truth even though they are under much greater pressure and have much less career protection because they work for Rumsfeld to their great credit in September of last year they put out a memo saying there is no reliable evidence to suggest that the Iraqis have biological or chemical weapons or that they are producing them Indeed the multitude of leaks of intelligence estimates reports memos and other records from within the military and intelligence communities suggests a deep dissatisfaction with the Bush regime But perhaps nothing is as telling as a recent report from Washington journalist and frequent FTW contributor Wayne Madsen who is also a former US Naval officer and a veteran of the National Security Agency In a recent article for the Online Journal Madsen noted Other effects of Weaponsgate are already apparent Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld the majordomo of the neocons within the Pentagon cannot find anyone to take the place of outgoing Army Chief of Staff General Eric Shinseki General Tommy Franks and Shinseki s vice chief General John Jack Keane want no part of the job After winning a lightning war against Iraq Franks suddenly announced his retirement He and Keane witnessed how Rumsfeld and his coterie of advisers and consultants who never once lifted a weapon in the defense of their country constantly ignored and publicly abused Shinseki Army Secretary and retired General Tom White resigned after a number of clashes with Rumsfeld and his cabal Curious as to whether this indicated a no confidence vote in the Bush administration by career professional military officers I e mailed Madsen and asked for further comment His reply was straight to the point Senior Pentagon officers have told me that Rumsfeld and his political advisers take no criticism from the military or the career civil servants to complain publicly though is to sign a death warrant for your career The cabal as they call themselves are extremely vindictive but there remains a full scale rebellion within the Pentagon especially the Defense Intelligence Agency as well as the CIA and State over the cooking of the books on the non existent Iraqi WMDs The people who have been dissed by Rumsfeld and his gang know WMDs are their weak point and even Richard Perle is worried that the wheels are coming off their charade As casualties continue to mount in the worsening guerrilla war in Iraq and as growing casualties in Afghanistan are beginning to attract notice it is a certainty that career military leaders are going to become more restive as they watch their troops die in attacks that remind us all of Vietnam and as the world continues to disintegrate The power of the military rarely discussed in the news media is substantial And if the military has no confidence in the White House it will shake both Washington and Wall Street to the core Without the military Wall Street cannot function This is especially true as conflicts continue to erupt all over Africa and instability mounts in Iran and Saudi Arabia That instability was created by an administration that is increasingly demonstrating zero management competence THE MEDIA MASSES THE MIGHTY WURLITZER PLAYS Not since the Watergate scandal of 1972 4 has a crescendo of press stories been more carefully crafted And it is because of this that we can see many historical connections to Watergate a coup that took down a President who believed he was invincible A Media Sampling What follows is a partial list of recent articles reports letters and editorials in the mainstream press focusing the administration s fraudulent case for the invasion of Iraq June 6
