    memorial services And then they go to the Radisson Hotel in Holtsville about 15 miles from the memorial beach site and spend hours talking at the bar or in a communal room upstairs On Thursday afternoon three of them Jim Hurd of Severn Md and John and Eleanor Seaman from Albany were resting and having a beer after an afternoon of gardening at the memorial to prepare for the service scheduled two days later They talked about the National Transportation Safety Board and trying to remember which airline Egypt Air or Swissair had a crash soon after T W A Flight 800 As they talked a gray Mitsubishi sedan pulled up to the curb and out stepped a rumpled looking middle aged couple The Seamans and Mr Hurd rushed over to the car Look who s here Mrs Seaman said embracing the woman and laughing We didn t think you were coming this year When did you leave Mr Seaman asked the man The couple Max and Margie Predeth had left their home in Sydney Australia four days earlier to begin their annual trek to Long Island Ms Predeth said the couple saved money all year flew standby and stayed in inexpensive motels so they could visit the spot where her niece and sister died I ve missed it Ms Predeth said as she watched children run to the ocean I ve missed it so much This is our eighth time Mr Predeth said It s a very soothing place to be You re amongst friends There s so many and you look forward to seeing all of them There s a bond It was one forged the families said during the first days after the crash in 1996 When the families were crammed into a Ramada Inn they talked

    particularly critical The document revealed that Federal Aviation Administration controllers had in fact tracked an object that approached and intersected with TWA 800 just as it exploded According to the document FAA technicians picked up the phone and immediately called the White House This FAA message went directly to terrorism czar Richard Clarke who shortly thereafter convened a meeting in the White House situation room As we reported last week Clarke deceives the readers of his book Against All Enemies about the provocation behind this meeting In his retelling the FAA was at a total loss for why the plane disappeared from its radar screens To dismiss talk of terrorism Clarke positions the plane s last altitude at 17 000 feet more than 3 200 feet above the last FAA reading Other documents leaked to Sanders showed a pattern of destruction originating on the extreme right side of the 747 The New York Times FBI sources identified row 23 extreme right side as the point at which an explosive event was first seen inside the passenger cabin In his book Clarke ignores the doubly confirmed PETN residue found in this section and claims that row 23 is where the center wing tank accidentally exploded a fact he boasts of having discovered before the NTSB or the FBI Needless to say Sanders is eager to depose Mr Clarke Another source told Sanders the FBI had classified portions of the Navy underwater debris field video and would not let any NTSB investigator view the classified video Sanders would soon learn the debris field was being altered to fit the exploding fuel tank hypothesis that the NTSB and FBI had been ordered to create The FBI was also making sure the independent minded NTSB investigators saw no parts that did not belong to TWA Flight 800 In the course of his investigation Sanders showed a key source a damage pattern across rows 17 18 19 heading toward the left side of the passenger cabin When the source observed the pattern he remarked that a reddish orange residue was on the seatbacks of those rows and only those rows This discovery would lead to the arrest of the source and both James and Elizabeth Sanders The source offered to scrape off red residue samples and give those to Sanders to have tested in a commercial lab When the Riverside Press Enterprise published the results of that test along with other revelations on Monday March 10 1997 all hell broke loose The federal conspirators had a serious problem The retired cop that had targeted them obviously had sources within their investigation Those sources were still at work For all the conspirators knew someone sitting in on their meetings was a whistleblower To stop the journalistic investigation into their now transparent lawlessness they unleashed the power of the Justice Department After the story broke U S Attorney Valerie Caproni met with Sanders and his attorney and told them that Sanders would be indicted and prosecuted if

    first tried to talk to Mr Crider after the second public hearing in Washington D C in August of 2000 when Captain Richard Russell and I approached the NTSB staff during the coffee break and I asked to speak with Mr Crider He came forward and I started to ask him about the graphs that he had prepared for the published Report Dr Bernard Loeb the NTSB s Safety Director intervened and would not let Mr Crider answer the questions We had a lively discussion but they were adamant in their refusal to answer my questions about the zoom climb After the hearing I telephoned NTSB Chairman Jim Hall and asked permission to speak to Mr Crider Mr Hall said that he would authorize it and notify Crider When I called Mr Crider he said that he had not received the authorization So a week later I tried again and Crider said he had still not received authorization I contacted Mr Hall again and repeated the request This time he referred me to Mr James Wildey Metallurgist I left Mr Wildey two messages and he never returned the calls Obviously the NTSB was not going to willingly talk to me

    could happen We ve warned about it We ve talked about it I regret to say as I served on the Intelligence Committee up until last year I can remember after the bombings of the embassies after TWA 800 we went through this flurry of activity talking about it but not really doing sic hard work of responding If Kerry talked about the fate of TWA Flight 800 before Sept 11 he does not seem to have done so in his role on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence The committee s annual report for 1996 does not breathe a word about the disaster even to dismiss it as an accident Throughout the year of 1997 the CIA worked on the creation of the now notorious video animation designed to discredit the eyewitnesses Again one would think this a likely topic for the Intelligence Committee s next report the one covering the period Jan 7 1997 through Oct 21 1998 But again not a word After Kerry remarks to Larry King on Sept 11 at least one person called his office for a clarification After some back and forth she was told she must have misunderstood On Sept 24 2001 there was no mistaking the meaning of Sen Kerry s remarks I personally watched him say the following to Chris Matthews on Hardball You know we ve had terrorism for a long time now We ve had the Achille Lauro the Munich Olympics the pipe bomb at the Olympics in Atlanta the TWA 800 the bombing of embassies and it s not going to disappear overnight On Sept 20 2001 one mainstream newspaper broke the story of how the so called Gore Commission failed conspicuously to address airline safety The paper claimed this failure represents the clearest recent public example
