    sea in flames shortly after takeoff from New York to Paris on July 17 1996 killing all 230 people on board The National Transportation Safety Board NTSB has ruled out a missile or bomb as the cause of the crash attributing it to an explosion of fuel fumes in the Boeing 747 s center fuel tank The exact cause of the blast has not been located but investigators have focused on a possible electrical fault The safety board has said it has found no intrusion damage or explosives residue consistent with a missile or a bomb But the group which filed the suit in Springfield Massachusetts District Court insists the disaster was caused by one or several heat seeking missiles and have charged the government with hiding or altering data to fit its conclusion Dozens of the 755 witnesses interviewed by the FBI shortly after the TWA 800 crash reported seeing a streak of light rising from the ground or ocean and heading toward the plane The center wing tank theory will never explain an object rising from the surface said Tom Stalcup chairman of the Flight 800 Independent Researchers Organization that filed the suit The NTSB said in March

    either side that he wants The National Transportation Safety Board has theorized the plane s explosion was caused by some sort of ignition in the jet s center fuel tank and the CIA prepared a widely televised cartoon video in 1997 that held the witnesses actually saw the light streaks from the plane climbing 3 000 feet after the jet started breaking up and the nose fell off That scenario was termed aerodynamically impossible by veteran aviation investigator William S Donaldson a retired Navy commander who s probing the accident for the Associated Retired Aviation Professionals a group of ex pilots support crews and former crash investigators which includes Adm Thomas Moorer former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff It also doesn t fit with available radar data eyewitness reports or a simple ballistic trajectory from the last radar return said Donaldson who called the CIA video clearly designed to try to explain away 96 eyewitnesses who saw a streak of light rising from the surface and intersect with Flight 800 Donaldson and other independent investigators believe the flight was downed with one or more missiles probably from terrorists or a Navy exercise gone awry One of the eyewitnesses present yesterday was Michael Wire a Richboro Pa millwright who was working on a bridge in Westhampton N Y on Long Island at the time Wire says he saw what he first thought were pale white cheap fireworks streaking into the sky up from the beach then disappearing then a big orange ball exploding It was so loud he insists it shook the bridge Wire says he was interviewed for about 90 minutes by federal agents and learned from recently released FBI documents that because he provided visual reference points he was the main eyewitness relied upon by the CIA in preparing its video simulation which didn t appear to be anything like I saw That is incorrect CIA spokesman Anya Guilsher told Gannett News Service yesterday referring to the description of Wire as the main CIA witness There were many many witness accounts taken into consideration The CIA video voice over says descriptions of an additional 200 eyewitnesses were factored in and that most saw flames only at the end of the aircraft s descent Another eyewitness retired Navy Master Chief Dwight Brumley was at the time a veteran with aircraft carrier experience stationed at the Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida Brumley now teaches math and science in Pensacola and said yesterday he was on USAir Flight 217 from Charlotte N C to Providence R I that night when his plane approached the south shore of Long Island He looked out his right side window and saw First a small plane passing closely underneath the USAir flight then what appeared to be some kind of flare from my lower right to my left then about two seconds later a small explosion then in another two seconds another explosion and a much larger ball of flame which fell into

    and a half later he learned that the ball of fire was a 747 with 230 crew and passengers aboard The darkness and the distance from the explosion shielded Brumley from the worst of the emotional onslaught but he still revisits that memory each time he sees news accounts and each time he steps onto an airplane I felt strong empathy for the families and the people on board There were whole families that were just gone he said After that each time I got on a plane there was still that little voice in the back of my head There were a few times when I had to take that exact flight again and I always said a little silent prayer when I went That lingering dismay and the anniversary of the crash sent Brumley 48 to Washington D C Monday where he helped announce the formation of the TWA Eyewitness Alliance a group that hopes to convince the federal government to re examine the cause of the crash which was witnessed by hundreds The alliance theorizes a missile downed the jet The information we presented seemed discounted he said Ninety six out of a hundred witnesses said they saw one thing and four percent saw something they re making fit with what they think happened It s kind scary something just doesn t jibe During the week after TWA Flight 800 went down Brumley was the subject of two 45 minute interviews one with Naval investigators the other with local FBI agents He has since had no contact with either agency and is particulary appalled that he was never contacted by anyone with aviation expertise No one from the local FBI office was available for comment Tuesday During major aviation disasters the FBI focuses on criminal matters while

    finally managed to mumble Grimly the executive laid out his theory TWA 800 took off was picked up on radar by U S fighters and then made the target by a giddy pilot As so often happens this military pilot was playing an ad hoc war game lock onto a commercial jet make believe it is an enemy plane then blow it out of the sky Only this time the executive insisted something went terribly wrong and the game turned real For years we ve been complaining about the military locking onto commercial jets and using them for target practice the executive said We go down to the Pentagon and bitch and they promise it ll never happen again Then when it does happen again they say no harm no foul I think they just fouled Over the course of this very peculiar lunch the airline executive also laid out several eerie scenarios watch the government attempt to discredit then ignore then awkwardly explain away the eyewitness accounts that support the missile theory Watch the President make an unprecedented gesture to the families of the TWA 800 victims Watch how the cockpit recorders will reveal no signs of crew comments indicating mechanical failure Watch how a mechanical problem will be vaguely blamed yet no 747s will be grounded Most of all he said Watch the players What do you mean Watch the players As if quizzing a befuddled child he said Who has the statutory authority to investigate air crashes in this country Well I said The National Transportation Safety Board except if Except if there is criminal activity involved and then the FBI is in the mix So what s the point Like I said watch the players Forget about what they say and what they do Eventually they will tell you its not a bomb it not a missile it s a mechanical But watch how the FBI doesn t go away If it is a mechanical the FBI has no legal authority to be anywhere near the NTSB But watch how the FBI will never go away I left that luncheon scared I wondered how a right thinking by the book airline executive became a conspiracy freak Except Except how come no airline executive I know thinks this luncheon conversation was strange How come whenever I ve asked about TWA 800 over the intervening four years they obsess about the number of times their aircraft have been targets of military jets playing war games Except how come everything that airline executive predicted during that lunch has come true The government has gone to extraordinary sometimes laughable lengths to discredit ignore then explain away eyewitness accounts President Clinton and the First Lady did take an unprecedented step They flew to Kennedy Airport to console the families of the TWA 800 victims They didn t even do that last year when American Flight 1420 crashed in the President s home state of Arkansas How come the cockpit recorders didn

    to a large fireball His aircraft was traveling approximately north and Flight 800 was traveling east The CIA distorted his statement after reading a short FBI 302 form and said his view of the streak was consistent with the flight path of Flight 800 In fact his view of the streak was at a 90 degree angle to Flight 800 s path and could not have been the burning aircraft as claimed by the CIA Next was Michael Wire the eyewitness on a bridge Although only the FBI interviewed him the CIA based their entire video discrediting the eyewitnesses on his written FBI 302 statement Mr Wire stated that the CIA video bears no resemblance to what he was He proceeded to describe seeing a flare rapidly rise from the surface arcing up leaving a squiggly smoke trail and then disappear for a second and erupting into an explosion During the Q A it was clear that what the CIA video showed was not what Mr Wire saw Next was James Sanders who presented photographs from the Calverton hanger He discussed how metal was bent during the reconstruction to fit the CWT explosion theory He presented quite a few photographs with a discussion of how the missile went through the aircraft Next came Tom Stalcup president of FIRO Flight 800 Independent Researchers Organization Tom gave a discussion of the eyewitness evidence and provided some examples along with the statistics related to the witness forms He also discussed the lawsuit filed by FIRO to force the FBI to release information Last was Cmdr Donaldson who spoke passionately about his reasons for pursuing this investigation and the evidence that is being ignored by the NTSB the failure of the left wing due to asymmetrical damage which is completely inconsistent with the CWT
