radiation caused swelling of the brain which made him tired and groggy by the end of each week He is now much more alert and has regained the vision he lost in his left eye He is determined to get stronger so he can get out of bed but that will take some time and physical therapy which Joyce and Teresa are learning to administer We have an appointment with his Oncologist next Tuesday at Walter Reed to begin his chemotherapy The drug they plan to use is Temozolomide which seems to have fewer side effects than normal chemotherapy The drug is administered orally and is taken for one week each month This is repeated monthly until the disease is in remission or he begins to get worse Last night on the NBC evening news there was a report on a new drug with very promising results I sent Dr Flynn his oncologist an e mail this morning asking about the drug and he responded that the drug was only being given in selected clinical trials and that Bill s condition would preclude him from being included in any trials I guess they want people who are in an earlier

the emergency room where they determined that he had a baldder infection He was admitted to the hospital and administered antibiotics His condition did not seem to improve as much as we hoped but they discharged him on Monday anyway On Tuesday he seemed to be getting worse until his daughter Teresa discovered that the Hospital had forgotten to give him his Steroids Although Teresa gave the Emergency team and the Hospital a detailed list of all his medications they somehow dropped the Steroids from his medication list The Steroids reduce the swelling in his brain and cannot be just stopped cold turkey without the patient experiencing steroid withdrawal They also stopped two other of his medications which did not help his condition any His family caught one of these errors when he was still in the hospital but the nurses take a dim view of family members standing over them when they dispense medications This is a long winded way of saying that you should always double check your medications when in the hopsital Today Wednesday he is doing much better now that he is back on his proper medications Chemotherapy is continuing and he will be also begin

Unfortunately within 24 hours he had a reaction to the new drug and was rushed back to the hospital for the 3 time in 2 weeks They discontinued the new siezure drug and by this time he had finished the 10 day course of antibiotics and they decided that his old anti siezure drug was adequate After a few more days in the hospital they sent him home again The local hospice has agreed to help Joyce and Teresa take care of Bill They have a nurse that comes in once a day to help out The last three weeks have been a big setback in his physical therapy and he is now mostly confined to bed Although Bill is not able to use his computer he has decided to begin work on his memoirs and is using a tape recorder to dictate his recollections Bill began the 2nd month of Chemotherapy and so far has shown no side effects We are not sure how effective it is but at least he does not seem to be getting any worse Here is a website that has a good summary of the treatment http brain mgh harvard edu ChemoGuide htm Bill
