  • AMI Hits Utah City With New Headaches
    utility in Utah wanted to notify customers about potential leaks But even after investing in smart meters it took years to get a good system in place so it could provide that information Confronted by residents upset over large water bills members of the City Council in Park City Utah asked the municipal Water Department in 2008 to start actively notifying customers when leaks were suspected Route Fifty reported The city began upgrading to advanced metering infrastructure in 2010 but it encountered problems as it tried to implement the new technology Despite the remote radio meter readings Park City wasn t prepared for the amount of data coming in and still struggled to quickly analyze it and notify customers of leaks the report said Deployment of AMI was a considerable expenditure for the City and the promise of leak detection was a significant reason for the investment Understandably customers became frustrated when these benefits were not quickly realized according to a report by one of the city s technology partners Eventually the city found a solution from WaterSmart Software a firm specializing in data analytics The city began using the firm s software three years ago Now customers receive home water reports with suggestions about cutting costs Since it began using this software the city has provided hourly water use data to customers High volume leak notifications are immediately sent if a single family residence uses 80 gallons per hour over 24 hours and low volume leak notifications sent if 1 gallon per hour is used over a week s time the news report said Jason Christensen the city s water resources manager explained why the software has helped Initially we wanted to develop our own customer portal to push data to them but then we took a look at

  • Algal Bloom May Be Linked To Alzheimers Researchers Say
    Society B The researchers focused on BMAA a toxin produced by cyanobacteria Cyanobacteria are also known as blue green algae The researchers found that chronic exposure to the environmental toxin BMAA can trigger neurodegeneration in vulnerable individuals the study said The study focused on vervet monkeys who were fed BMAA laced bananas Within 140 days they developed abnormal brain structures called plaques and tangles similar to those found in brains of Guam islanders who died of an Alzheimer s like illness called ALS PDC the Daily Mail reported Paul Cox the lead researcher on the study spoke to the Daily Mail He said growing indications that BMAA might trigger Alzheimer s and MND were potentially very worrying the report said He stressed they were not claiming to have created Alzheimer s in monkeys by feeding them the algal toxin The type and location of brain plaques found in ALS PDC which they recreated in the vervets is different to that in Alzheimer s he noted the report said Cox explained the significance of the findings to the newspaper The parts of the vervets brains we found plaques in and the density of the tangles was very similar to early stage Alzheimer s disease he said per the report Something is going on here BMAA could be a contributory factor in some people Previous studies have discovered that BMAA is commonly found in the brains of Alzheimer s and MND sufferers but only rarely in others he said per the report Alzheimer s experts echoed Cox s cautiousness about meaning of the findings Laura Phipps from Alzheimer s Research UK spoke to The Independent While investigating rare forms of dementia can lead to insights into the more common causes of the condition further research is needed to understand whether the findings

    Hauser Inc KROHNE Inc Kaeser Compressors Inc Emerson Process Management Rosemount Analytical Degremont Technologies Brentwood Industries View All Providers News Feature February 8 2016 Dilution Cost Saver For Waste Utilities By Sara Jerome sarmje A town in Massachusetts is hoping dilution via tidal discharge is a technique that could curb costs at its wastewater treatment facility Newburyport is currently involved in an engineering study to show its plant can comply with the new regulations by using additional dilution via tidal discharge or relocation of the wastewater treatment facility s outfall The Daily News of Newburyport reported The hope is that if the U S EPA finds this report acceptable Newburyport will not have to expand its current facilities The town had previously been in step with federal wastewater standards but rule changes left the facility noncompliant The EPA reauthorizes wastewater plants every five years according to the report Town Manager Neil Harrington explained the town s approach Dilution won t be without cost but it won t be as expensive as expansion he said per the report The facility in Newburyport is designed to handle 3 4 MGD according to the city It includes four aeration basins eight mechanical mixers two primary clarifiers two gravity thickeners two aerobic digesters two secondary clarifiers and two chlorine contact chambers with chlorination and dechlorination Sludge dewatering is performed with two two meter belt filter presses Newburyport waste facilities just completed an upgrade Last year odor was among the problems faced by the plant according to Mayor Donna Holaday per the Daily News The wastewater treatment facility underwent a major upgrade completed two years ago but we continue to work on additional methods to control odors she said Weather conditions and rains impact odors and we are working with consultants to continually adjust and
