  • Linde Oxygen Booster Cuts Soluble BOD After Or Before DAF Treatment
Safety Compliance Officer CESCO at Koch Foods contacted Linde a global leader in environmentally friendly water treatment solutions The Linde team estimated that costs for the proposed SOLVOX system would be about as low as an acid treatment system yet SOLVOX would also offer significant environmental advantages Sustainability is very important to Koch Foods as a leader in the food industry and a positive force in our local community The Linde SOLVOX oxygenation system exceeded our expectations he said Dramatic Drop in BOD In the weeks after the SOLVOX system start up effluent BOD5 levels fell on the order of 90 percent Even in cold weather the system operates well within the anticipated reduction target of 50 percent BOD removal Mid November to mid February realized an average effluent BOD5 reduction of 63 9 percent effluent BOD5 326 milligrams liter compared to the pre start up period effluent BOD5 903 mg L The Linde solution for Koch Foods includes a 6 000 gallon liquid oxygen tank with vaporizer and control system The SOLVOX control system delivers O2 through a gas sparger that feeds the oxygen enriched water into a custom injection header inside the bottom of the EQ tank Wastewater in the EQ tank is continuously recirculated back through the sparger In addition to creating a homogeneous mixture of wastewater the EQ tank equalizes the flow to the flocculation tubes which are part of the DAF process With the SOLVOX system in place colloidal and soluble BOD is converted in the EQ tank in one of two ways 1 Some is oxidized to carbon dioxide and water which creates energy for the biomass 2 some is converted into biomass which is easily skimmed off by the DAF unit Linde pure oxygen injection and O2 diffusion systems can boost dissolved oxygen levels much more efficiently than aeration systems which require energy intensive compressors The Linde SOLVOX oxygenation system offers several different types of oxygen delivery and control systems Linde engineers help to determine the optimal solution for oxygen injection For example oxygen can be injected directly into pipes using customized spargers diffused into a treatment tank using special oxygen diffusion mats or nozzles or injected into a lagoon through high velocity jets When DAF Needs a Boost For separating solids DAF units often use a coagulant and flocculent polymer ahead of the flotation unit Yet there are limits to these pretreatments especially when organic solid loadings are high or hydraulic pressure dips DAF pretreatment chemicals help reduce organic solids but have far less impact on sBOD which requires improved aerobic digestion In general poor aeration promotes anaerobic decay which can lead to foul odors and complaints from the community In addition excursions above BOD discharge targets can result in special fees or assessments from wastewater treatment authorities Large scale DAF tanks can measure 40 feet long or more and are often used in conjunction with buffering tanks lagoons or activated sludge systems to improve clarification of organic solids An industrial DAF

  • Atomized Mist Innovator Announces New Mobile Odor Control Technology
very effective at suppressing dust And both dust suppression and odor control are based on similar principles of matching the droplet size to its target The closer the water droplet size is to the size of the targeted vapor droplets the more likely there will be a collision between the two which is the basis for dust and odor management with atomized mist Driven by customer demand for a better odor control solution the company to begin working on a new design The water flow and droplet size were optimized for odor suppression Stiverson said We also knew that we needed compressed air to create a vapor with extremely small droplets rather than a conventional mist Stiverson stressed that most odor suppression techniques can be seen as mainly passive measures They are typically static methods of controlling odor such as perimeter misting systems intended to form a barrier to prevent odor causing vapor from escaping In contrast the OB 60 is a more aggressive active approach a mobile unit that can cover large areas of odor causing material It dispenses highly effective air treatment chemicals such as the OB line of deodorizers which can hang suspended in the air for long periods of time as they attract and counteract odor causing molecules At the same time the OB 60G can also be used as a powerful perimeter barrier The key for many operations is the versatility of the OB 60G which can be quickly repositioned on its trailer to accommodate changing work locations or shifting wind patterns That easy mobility is one of the features setting it apart from other misting systems The design can also be set for specific oscillation arcs and aimed precisely at odor causing substrates Some customers have dispensed with their previous odor control methods after trying out the OdorBoss Stiverson observed Others have found that it can complement existing technologies as part of a comprehensive odor control plan for their sites In either case we have designed what I believe to be the most effective airborne odor control system currently on the market Designing for Odor Control The system creates an engineered fog comprised of millions of tiny chemically enhanced droplets as small as 15 microns in diameter approximately twice the size of a human red blood cell which is required to effectively distribute the chemical into the air Delivered by a special open ended barrel design containing a powerful fan on one end and the Odor X Atomizer nozzle on the other the device is mounted on a towable roadworthy trailer that is also fitted with a 500 gallon 1893 L water tank Designed to be moved and adjusted with changing conditions by a standard pickup truck or small skid steer the low maintenance unit runs for 16 hours on a single tank under normal operating conditions The fine fog produced by the atomizing nozzle is propelled by a 25 horsepower fan generating 30 000 cubic feet per minute 152 4 CMS of air
