  • Lessons From Nestle’s Zero Water Facility
    scarcity will improve our water use efficiency relieving pressure on California s water resources Lopez said in the company s statement The next step was to carefully scrutinize how things used to run in Modesto and identify room for improvement We began by updating our factory water map which includes all water users for the facility Nestlé told Water Innovations We then conducted a mini Kaizen event 2 involving our factory team and various subject matter experts to identify the top water users Following this event we prioritized projects aimed at finding solutions to reduce reuse and recycle water use in our operations The Nestlé team found that reuse offered the best chance to achieve zero water The critical first step is to set the minimum baseline the company said From there water reuse becomes the focal point to further the transformation to a zero water facility The approach we took was to first focus on water reductions to set the baseline for minimum consumption required for our process Nestlé installed evaporation technologies in Modesto which allow the plant to reuse the waste left over from making Carnation condensed milk We looked at opportunities to optimize reuse water where possible such as reusing or recycling milk water from the evaporator process that ultimately reduces overall water consumption Nestlé said Evaporator technologies are typically favored in produced water treatment as the process isn t particularly sensitive to traces of oil But they are also becoming popular in industrial plants looking to increase reuse Water recovered from evaporator systems will meet virtually all discharge specifications and is ideal for reapplication in cooling processes Most evaporator systems on the market consist of a falling film evaporator followed by a crystallizer and filter press or rotary spray dryer which separate liquids that can be reused In addition to evaporation upgrades the Nestlé plant introduced a new filtration system I worked with Nestlé at their Arrowhead bottled water plant in Cabazon CA to install a filtration system on their cooling tower in order to reduce the amount of blowdown water they would send to the sewer said Jim Lauria president and founder of Team Chemistry LLC and an executive in the water technology field 3 A large air conditioner tower can discharge 70 000 gallons and evaporate 200 000 gallons of water per day according to Recycled Water Use In Cooling Tower Systems a presentation from water and wastewater consultant Paul R Puckorius given to a WateReuse Association workshop The practice of utilizing reused water in a cooling tower has been popular for decades because of this high consumption coupled with the fact that cooling tower water does not need to be of comparatively high quality When asked about other innovations that a facility eyeing water reuse might consider Lauria pointed to a problematic industry fixture One of the largest depositories of water associated with any industrial facilities is their wastewater lagoons he said These hold large volumes of water over a large area for

    sustainable energy and water projects particularly around financial payback CFOs and engineering managers were particularly skeptical of over cooked sustainability claims and of vendors using ethical leverage urging buyers to spend for the sake of the environment while ignoring their real business needs The market by contrast feels the sustainability industry should become more cost effective and be sure that business gets the results that they believe they have been led to expect and have paid for says the report Mr Bambridge who has more than 30 years experience in major waste water and green energy projects in Australia and the Asia Pacific says such healthy skepticism is sometimes justified given the number of less experienced operators moving into the business as clean water and green energy become headline corporate issues Too many fulsome promises have been made and accepted possibly because they haven t been subjected to sufficiently rigorous financial analysis using the same terms of reference for all parties This makes it hard for those of us who present realistic proposals and later are left to clean up the mess created by others But we are pleasantly surprised to see how Australasian management is responding positively to environmental challenges The report is very positive said Mr Bambridge whose company represents proven local technologies as well as advanced international technologies such as those of Global Water Engineering which recently won the IChemE green energy award of an organisation representing more than 40 000 chemical engineering specialists Continuing the picture of optimism towards environmental initiatives presented in the report over 80 percent of respondents agree it is a genuine investment priority with almost 60 percent agreeing strongly yet almost half feel it is at least to some extent a response to politically correct pressure Over 90 percent of respondents believe the CFO is receptive to sustainability initiatives with a strong cost justification though a third agree that Finance has higher investment priorities than Sustainability In the open comments for the survey on major challenges in Sustainability a number of respondents said that raising its importance over other investment priorities was either their first or second challenge while in the Opportunities section many respondents cited business growth or new product development as their key Sustainability opportunity A number of PES managers candidly said that the first priority of the business was growth in which context while environmental sustainability and energy efficiency came last unless as one respondent said Federal policies change and then it could be a whole new ball game CST Wastewater Solutions Managing Director Michael Bambridge right who recently installed a GWE combined green energy and wastewater treatment plant for one of Australia s major global beef processers Oakey Beef Exports He is seen at left with the then Australian Federal Industry and Science Minister Ian Macfarlane discussing how the plant will save 40 per cent of the plant s current bills for natural gas Another Chief Engineer described Environment and Sustainability as the poor cousin on the Production
