  • How Do You Disinfect Electrolysis Offers Alternative To Chlorine
been around about a decade MIOX is making a notable impression on the water and wastewater treatment industry Spun out of Los Alamos National Labs in New Mexico the same that does nuclear research MIOX developed a disinfection technique that has the characteristics of a disruptive technology designed for one purpose but destined to have broader impact The military was having problems especially in the Special Forces area with good water disinfection that was portable and also something that could stay in the field without refills explains Craig Beckman president and CEO of MIOX Corporation MIOX developed a technology based on an electrolysis process We re able to create multiple oxidants in the same stream and those oxidants work together to actually be more effective than standard bleach or even ozone or UV Today the technology has been successfully expanded successfully into very large municipal systems such as West Columbia SC which was struggling with disinfection byproducts in its distribution system Beckman relates the issue They didn t have many organics in their feed source so when they were chlorinating they weren t forming disinfection byproducts like THMs and haloacetic acids right at the source but as they got to the end of distribution they were starting to fail those tests for disinfection byproducts What they found was that the distribution system had an enormous biofilm growth and that biofilm that was in the pipes combined with an oxidant that was creating the disinfection byproducts that are now regulated by the EPA The city switched over to our technology because the chemistry is much more effective at removing biofilm Within a month they were able to meet all of the disinfection byproduct rules and regulations They also saved a lot of money because much of the chlorine they were buying

  • How Do You Build A Heavier Floc And Let It Sink And Settle Faster
Inc Emerson Process Management Rosemount Analytical Degremont Technologies Brentwood Industries View All Providers Podcast July 1 2015 How Do You Build A Heavier Floc And Let It Sink And Settle Faster Contact The Supplier That s a question that Jim Georger regional sales manager with Kruger a division of Veolia discussed with Water Online Radio recently Kruger s market focus is strictly municipal water and wastewater treatment and one of the products Kruger is focusing on is Actiflo which is high rate clarification with ballast It s a compact process that operates with microsand as a seed for floc formation so the floc will settle faster Georger told Water Online We didn t invent it we didn t create it They ve been trying to do this since the 1950s It was perfected if you will in the late 1980s The first installation was on the drinking water side So high rate clarification for drinking water It s all about the rise rate at the back end for clarification speed Back then they were running rise rates anywhere from 8 10 12 gallons per minute per square foot Today with the advancements we re up to 30 32 gallons per minute per square foot The number one driver for Actiflo has always been footprint Compared to a conventional plant Actiflo is 10 or 20 percent of the size so you re looking at concrete savings and better control of the process according to Georger Today however one of the main drivers is performance based with so many areas having drought or flooding conditions It s been well proven to be effective in an area like Texas where there has been flooding high turbidity water and flashy waters from 5 to 2000 NTU Also as Kruger does more piloting with Actiflo
