  • Smart Water Meter Adoption Rates On The Rise
KROHNE Inc Kaeser Compressors Inc Emerson Process Management Rosemount Analytical Degremont Technologies Brentwood Industries View All Providers News Feature February 1 2016 Smart Water Meter Adoption Rates On The Rise By Sara Jerome sarmje A major survey of utility executives shows that smart water meter adoption rates are on the rise Fifty eight percent of water utilities now deploy smart meters up from only 12 percent in 2014 EnergyBiz reported Water utilities plan to add more smart meters in the coming years Sixty percent of water utility employees said they plan to put in place more smart meters than they did last year The survey comes from BRIDGE Energy Group a smart grid and utility management services company The firm surveyed over 20 000 utility executives managers and engineers about their attitudes toward smart meters When it comes to using smart technology utilities still rate reliability as a primary objective although its relative importance has declined for the second consecutive year with only 66 percent of respondents rating reliability as priority 1 or 2 41 percent of utilities are focused on improving operations through work and asset management and 34 percent consider customer empowerment a priority BRIDGE Energy Group said in a statement Smart meters can provide numerous benefits to utilities but adopting the technology can mean cost operational and consumer outreach challenges Some customers are wary of smart electric or water meters according to the MIT Technology Review The sudden appearance of the technology sparked a national opposition movement and poor communication by the utilities has not helped matters In 2010 county officials in Marin County a liberal bastion in California voted to block the meters over health concerns In Texas Tea Party activists and militia members began opposing smart meters and calling them Big Brother type spying the

  • Faster And Safer Construction Of Tanks And Silos
utilities the proper storage and processing of solids and liquids places extremely demanding requirements on the holding tank especially if toxic or aggressive substances are likely to be present This means that their fabrication and erection are critical processes that cannot be compromised Adding to this complexity of large tank builds is compliance with Health and Safety regulations such as The Working at Heights Regulations introduced in 2005 which have played such an important role in reducing on site accidents In concrete tank construction whether jumpforming slipforming or building from pre cast blocks working at height is an inevitable part of the process as it is with large bolted steel section tanks It is against this background of more traditional complex tank construction methods that an alternative system of tank and silo building has come to the fore At its foundation is the Dual Seal System for joining metal Developed by Lipp GmbH this patented system is based on a double edge folding principle to ensure optimum safe storage for solid liquid or even gaseous substances While the sealing system is innovative the assembly process that it enables is even more so and the Lipp Dual Seam System is believed to be the fastest simplest way to build reliable containers and tanks The size of the containers is variable anywhere between 3m and over 40m in diameter with tank heights of up to 40 metres A key part of the tank s strength comes from the steel composite used in construction The steel composite Verinox uses galvanised steel on the outer layer and stainless steel on the inner providing both strength and corrosion resistance at sensible costs The process starts with the fabrication of the appropriate quantity of Verinox composite stainless steel band supplied on site in a coil Also delivered to the site is the transportable assembly system conceived and developed by Lipp The composite steel band is fed into the assembly device at ground level which begins to mechanically pull the band through it As the steel band rotates through the assembly device the storage tank cylinder emerges spiralling upwards from ground level with the assembly device forming the Dual Seam seal as it goes Whilst the tank construction is still at low level the roof can be added After that the spiral form continues building upwards and the process of tank erection is entirely automated Not only is the construction process fast and safe it also eliminates the need for nuts and bolts which can be a point of structural weakness and the need to work at height with all the risks that can present In addition being built around a circular former the potential for the tank to be constructed with a profile that is not quite perfectly round is eliminated such out of true construction can again be a potential point of structural weakness that can lead to catastrophic failure With the Lipp Dual Seam System and the innovative method of container construction outstanding quality

  • Freezing Ice And Thawing Why Your Pipes May Be At Risk To Burst
frozen pipes have burst in an office building in Springfield Ohio and a psychology building at The Ohio State University in Columbus With winter s freezing temperatures likely to stick around another month WaterSignal the leading manufacturer of a system that sends real time water usage date and alerts to building owners managers is providing recommendations to safeguard pipes in unheated areas before they cause freeze and cause messy and often expensive issues Water is unique in that it expands as it freezes says David Taylor Senior Vice President of WaterSignal As the water in your pipes begins to freeze the expansion places tremendous pressure on the pipe wall Regardless of quality and strength expanding water can cause pipes to break Just one burst pipe running at 4 to 8 gallons per minute can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage in a matter of minutes And the water cost alone since bursts may occur during the weekend when no one is around can be very high The most common pipe freezes occur on those that are exposed to frigid temperatures such as outdoor hose bibs and water supply lines in unheated interior areas like basements and crawlspaces Taylor recommends that during days of extreme cold take preventative action by Opening cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing Allowing cold water to drip from faucets served by exposed pipes Running water through the pipe helps prevent pipes from freezing Keeping the thermostat set to the same temperature no lower than 55 F both during the day and at night You may incur a higher heating bill but you can prevent a much more costly repair job from pipe freezing In the event of pipe freezing and you experience a no flow situation Turn off the property s main water valve and leave the faucets open until pipes thaw Do not apply open flame electronic heaters or hair dryers directly to the piping Patience and a warm environment are the best way to thaw pipes without causing damage When turning the main water valve back on have one person slowly turn the valve on while another person walks the property to be sure no water is leaking If water is flowing immediately turn off the property s main water valve and open faucets in the lowest part of the property i e basement laundry sink For added assurance consider utilizing WaterSignal s breakthrough water monitoring technology WaterSignal is a self contained non intrusive monitor that continuously reads the water meter and wirelessly sends real time data to a website portal allowing the manager to view the property s water consumption by month day or even by hour If a major leak occurs much like an energy surge popping a circuit breaker the device immediately alerts the manager or engineer that a water spike above the preset limit has occurred The alert can be sent to both a computer and a smartphone for the manager to act
