  • PFOA Scare In New York Spurs Federal Involvement
    are getting involved The U S Environmental Protection Agency issued a statement warning residents in Hoosick Falls not to drink or cook with village water because of elevated levels of a toxic chemical found in the public water system last year the Times Union reported The chemical in question is perfluorooctanoic acid PFOA The EPA considers it an emerging threat meaning it may pose a potential or real threat to public health PFOA is a manmade substance readily absorbed after oral exposure It accumulates primarily in the serum kidney and liver Toxicological studies on animals indicate potential developmental reproductive and systemic effects It has been linked to kidney and testicular cancer among other major health problems The chemical was used since the 1940s to manufacture industrial and household products such as non stick coatings and heat resistant wiring including at a factory near the village water treatment plant the news report said Hoosick Falls politicians had been hesitant to issue a don t drink warning but after the EPA chimed in local officials quickly fell in line The village s mayor has reversed his position and adopted the EPA s recommendation the report said The EPA s public statement was issued four days after a Times Union story reported that the state Health Department and village leaders including Mayor David B Borge downplayed the health risks of PFOA in the water supply and declined to warn people not to drink it The story reported that many village residents including a longtime family physician in Hoosick Falls Dr Marcus E Martinez suspected that high cancer rates and other extraordinary health problems in the village s population may be the result of the contaminated water the report continued Michael Hickey a private resident discovered PFOA in the Hoosick Falls water supply last

    are living without running water VICE News recently examined this problem focusing on the Navajo Nation where a lack of infrastructure and decades of uranium mining have made clean tap water unavailable to many About 40 percent of residents on the Navajo Nation lack access to tap water the report said The Navajo Nation has a 70 percent unemployment rate in part because the lack of running water makes it difficult for businesses to operate the report said Many people leave the reservation to survive the report said Residents without access haul water from watering points served by the Navajo Tribal Utilities Authority NTUA or from unregulated sources such as livestock wells and springs The number of unregulated water sources is estimated to be in the low thousands according to the U S EPA NTUA is tasked with fixing the tap water problem According to the utility it services the 27 000 square mile Navajo Nation including 36 600 water and 13 600 wastewater customers The cost to solve the tap water problem is 5 billion at minimum according to Rex Kontz the deputy general manager at NTUA There aren t a lot of places to pull money from The normal avenues that cities take like raising rates which generates all this money we don t have those options he said He estimated that it could be 50 years before tap water access is universal on the Navajo Nation Some people are going to be dead before they get it he said Uranium mining during the Cold War played a major role in contaminating reservation water sources Many of the companies responsible for mining no longer exist Eight companies that remain active including Chevron and General Electric are investigating and cleaning up the mines they are responsible for the report

  • Drinking Water Still In Peril From WWII Army Factory
    a major polluter of Wisconsin groundwater Badger Army Ammunition Plant was a military installation built in 1942 on more than 7 000 acres near Baraboo The plant was owned and operated by the U S government to produce smokeless gunpowder for rockets cannons and small arms used in World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars It operated on and off for 33 years the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism recently reported During its operation the plant pumped excess chemicals and millions of gallons of wastewater into Lake Wisconsin and burned toxic substances in large pits on the site leaving the soil surface and groundwater contaminated with a dangerous stew of chemicals including some known or likely to cause cancer the report said The Army has doled out 125 million to clean up contamination but locals like Mary Jane Koch are still feeling the effects of the problem Koch stopped drinking the water in her home 11 years ago shortly after an industrial compound turned up in the well supplying drinking water to her home the report said Now the army is working to help 400 households affected by the contamination The plan is to install a water system that delivers tap water not reliant on tainted local groundwater In June as a first step a new water district and water district governing board were created in the area according to Capital Newspapers U S Army representative Mike Sitton said the information of the water district starts the process of applying for the funding of the construction of a public water system and gives the green light to start what he said could be a long approval process Costs for the construction of the system two years ago were estimated at 20 to 30 million the report said There

    14 2015 New Tests Show Rio Water Even More Dangerous By Sara Jerome sarmje Water contamination in Rio may be worse than researchers previously believed Water quality in the host city of the upcoming summer Olympics has been a major concern ever since an Associated Press AP investigation showed contamination that could potentially sicken athletes Now a new round of testing offers more disheartening news New AP research shows the city s Olympic waterways are as rife with pathogens far offshore as they are nearer land where raw sewage flows into them from fetid rivers and storm drains the AP reported That means there is no dilution factor in the bay or lagoon where events will take place and no less risk to the health of athletes like sailors competing farther from the shore the report said The follow up found viruses more than a kilometer from the Guanabara Bay shores where sailing events will be held Sports Illustrated Wire reported citing the AP In July an AP investigation revealed that athletes will be swimming and boating in waters so contaminated with human feces that they risk becoming violently ill and unable to compete in the games The probe pointed to dangerously high levels of viruses and bacteria from human sewage in Olympic and Paralympic venues results that alarmed international experts and dismayed competitors training in Rio some of whom have already fallen ill with fevers vomiting and diarrhea Some officials have downplayed the threat Bob McCormack the chief doctor for the Canadian Olympic Committee said recently that Rio s water presents an acceptable level of risk We re pretty confident that while the risk is never zero it would be acceptable with the steps that we ve got in place and the contingency plans that we ve got in
