  • Where's Runnicles: King Charles III at the Almeida, or, An Unconvincing Fantasy
is telling in Act Two despite the flaws of plot and speech Of the rest I enjoyed Adam James s Mr Evans Nick Sampson s press secretary and Nyasha Hatendi s doubling as kebab shop owner and archbishop I have never subscribed to the Rupert Goold fan club This is a solid piece of direction in terms of the general management of personnel and there are some striking individual visual moments That said I think the singing is overlong in places and the sections of movement feel like pale imitations of devices that others utilise better There is not the same richness of tension between performers and cleverness of movement that often characterises the work of someone like Marianne Elliott and her collaborators Overall this is a work which can t decide whether it wants to be a comedic mockery of the royal family and its place in British public life or a dark prediction of the future As the former it isn t nearly funny enough the supply of jokes is too thin they re insufficiently funny and Beyond the Fringe s send up of the history plays is miles better cod Shakespeare As the latter the set up is too unconvincing for the serious points to carry the weight that they should obviously if Charles and the political class do prove to be that stupid I shall be the first to admit how wrong I was This is not an instance where I would advise you not to bother going should it transfer There are points of interest and moments of power But it is a long way from being the great new history play for our times that others have proclaimed it to be Finally there is an achievement in this performance which deserves one of our occasional Where s Runnicles Awards The inaugural Mike Bartlett Award for Having Unfortunate Delusions of Shakespeare goes to Mike Bartlett • Where's Runnicles: Dr Dee at ENO, or Pageantry is no Substitute for Heart (or indeed Score)
with Dee is that Alan Moore left the project and the Albarn was left with something whose nature it feels he barely understood My issue with Albarn s Dr Dee is that it has somehow managed to make one of England s more interesting Elizabethans boring I think you might learn more and find more of interest about Dee from going the British Museum and viewing his Scrying Mirror etc http youtu be BbnUvpciM U As you non doubt know the idea for an opera based on Dr Dee was not Albarn and or Hewlett s but actually Alan Moore s they instead had originally I believe intended to create a Super Hero opera and approached Moore with this in mind However it was Moore who suggested Dee as a subject instead This should probably come as little surprise to anyone that has followed Moore s previous musical works or indeed his graphic novel output I might argue that if one listens to Dee I think the influence of Moores work as part of The Moon and Serpent Grand Egyptian Theatre of Marvels can be slightly detected although Dee is alas far less effective But then those works are not operas http youtu be zdMHAipa qs To me and of course as Christopher points out above these things are of personal taste Dr Dee by Albarn and Norris is John Dee s Magic Mirror only while I would suspect had Moore remain involved it would have been all of his artifacts that still exist and more Christopher Thank you for the link and thoughtful comments Alas for me it is not a matter of it s operatic credentials it is simply that it it boring and does not do justice to its subject matter Reply Delete Finn Pollard 30 June 2012 at 22 40 The Wagnerian Thanks for your very extensive and thoughtful comments which I read with interest Was back at ENO for Billy Budd this evening so haven t managed to look at the Youtube links yet but will do so Interesting that it was Moore s project originally his dropping out might certainly explain some of the problems Reply Delete The Wagnerian 1 July 2012 at 00 52 Indeed perhaps more information than you might need Finn but if you were feeling really nerdy track down a copy of Strange Attractor Vol 4 which features a 30 page feature written by Moore which includes part of the original libretto and his stage design concepts http strangeattractor co uk books strange attractor journal four Reply Delete Add comment Load more Newer Post Older Post Home • Where's Runnicles: Aldeburgh 2012 - Britten's GPO Films
misplaced a page of his script given the challenges of the venture it only highlighted how smoothly the rest of the night had run It served as a reminder too of just what an effective partnership Britten and Auden could be Though it was not as West stated their last major collaboration which was of course the oft forgotten Paul Bunyan though possibly he had simply lost the word film as well One of the most impressive aspects of the evening was the quality of the prints Whether they have been cleaned or restored for this or previously or whether they have just been kept in excellent nick the fact remains that when blown up on the large screen installed in the Maltings they looked very good indeed I have heard many fine things about the Aurora Orchestra so it is good to finally have met them in the concert hall The praise is well earned and they certainly proved themselves an impressive chamber ensemble Collon ensured they and West were well co ordinated with the pictures no mean feat as the films are full of gaps between music or between narrations This was aided by some nice technology whoever had done the work of putting in the cue lines that swept across the screen of Collon s laptop had done their job well West himself did a generally excellent job on the narration vividly capturing the spirit of the films True there was the odd moment when the balance wasn t quite right but judging such a live amplified venture to perfection is nigh on impossible and few if any words were actually lost In short it was an immensely fun evening and several things struck me First and especially given the anniversary coming next year I would think there might be a market for a DVD release of some of the films with scores redone by this very fine team Secondly it would make rather a good Prom if the BBC are looking for a slightly different way to celebrate the anniversary next year The afternoon talk closed with a fun question left unanswered what composer and poet should the Royal Mail turn to to revive their fortunes It is probably a task beyond our greatest poets and composers but answers on a post card or a comment below if you have any suggestions for them
