  • Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q Prototype hands on. « Wide Open Camera
window of what is being recorded You can also assign the inputs and outputs as four inputs and two outputs or two inputs and four outputs all are bidirectional There is also HD SDI to HDMI cross conversion built in All the inputs are 3G SDI The FS700 support option will the be first offering from Convergent with a roll out on options for the device spread out over the year into 2014 I got to see and try 2K 120fps and 240fps out of the FS700 into the 7Q and it worked fine 4K was not yet available as an option but I am told 4K DPX is coming The second option will be the Canon C500 which will have uncompressed RAW recording capability as RMF files spread across two SSD drives A 4K compressed codec is also in the works but I cannot mention the name of said codec as it has not yet pasted qualifications etc and therefore legally they cannot say Avid DNxHD will be a standard offering with the 7Q and will be an upgrade option for the base model 7 No more fans required Entire back is a heat sink Some of the big things I noticed are that the SSD offerings have changed Originally there was going to be a 960GB drive but now it is 256gb and 512gb only This is due to new drive qualifications and testing of the unit where Convergent had found better drives that use lower power at a higher speed The new drives no longer have to cache and record later and only take 10 seconds to format This is a big improvement although I think the bigger capacity was still appealing High bandwidth formats like Alexa RAW and C500 RAW both require you to have two drives mounted Both formats require Clip Merger software to mux the files into one folder in post as files are spread across two drives for parity and speed Mind you Clip Merger is very quick and can process a terabyte of data in under a minute Also of note you will no longer need a proprietary transfer station as the new SSD s are 2 5 and will work with the Seagate thunderbolt adapter dock However the unit will only work with Convergent SSD s and there will not be any others qualified to work with the Odyssey Overall the prototype worked great The 7Q is planned for release sometime around the first week of September with option upgrades and option rentals to follow If you are looking for a high quality monitor and are also in the market for a recorder the 7Q is a great option The base model however will only allow for DNxHD and does not have the same amount of inputs etc as the 7Q so think about future needs vs the now Compact but feature rich Michael Sutton You can follow me on twitter at MNS1974 Jared Abrams Visit My Website View My Other

  • The New Digital Cinema Race « Wide Open Camera
think we are going to see any manufacturer dominate across the board when it comes to 4K There aren t any gamechangers in this next generation of cameras they are all targeted at different audiences and have their own market In Hollywood the choice for digital cinema camera has been Alexa or Epic since 2011 4K was a big factor to some others just upscaled the 2 8K from the Alexa to 4K and called it a day No other camera has had a lasting impact I don t expect that to hold true for much longer Sony has been chomping at the bit to get a chance in Hollywood for a while their F900 and F950 have been kicking ass in their niche and the F65 just can t seem to get the acceptance it deserves Now with the F55 F5 and FS700 Sony wants everyone to shoot 4K no matter the budget Canon is knocking on the door with the 1D C and C500 very opposite ends of the spectrum but a complimentary pair that I think will catch on nicely I think the aesthetic of video is going to change with 4K adoption We might see more ultra flat seemingly ungraded videos out there We might suddenly see an uptake in lighting techniques and larger depth of field to really allow the audience to appreciate all those wonderful Ks Either way the ball is rolling the industry is converging dividing and completely unrestrained I d be scared to buy a camera right now I m just going to play with my Blackmagic Pocket Camera until the dust settles and rent all these cool new toys as necessary Jared Abrams Visit My Website View My Other Posts Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood California After many

  • Rebooting Hollywood: What’s Broken? « Wide Open Camera
what was supposed to be the birth of a new franchise So despite Disney going from batting a thousand to having 2 quarter of a billion dollar films absolutely bomb Hollywood is doing pretty good Here s the thing the theater experience is still a selling point in itself I credit the experience for why Hollywood hasn t faltered 3D is still a minor factor but I haven t been upsold on that technology still Watching shit explode and feeling that body melting subwoofer is like riding a 100 minute roller coaster nowadays Man of Steel Fast and Furious 6 World War Z and lots of other recent films I would probably never watch at home but they kick ass in the theater because you feel like at any moment Vin Diesel might drive a car into your face This isn t why your parents went to the theater but it s why people go nowadays I m not happy with the current state of Hollywood at all but I don t think it s going to implode on its own Nothing has come to replace the theater for those date nights family outings and just avoiding the heat on a summer day The world is changing around Hollywood and it s having trouble keeping up It s now possible to make these epic explosive films on a relative budget compared to yesteryear making directors like Michael Bay the new hotshots not Steven Spielberg That s where the money is It s about taking the least risk for the most reward Disney bet big twice and got stung while everyone else pumped out films with half the budget and made off like bandits even when they flopped A Good Day to Die Hard and Oblivion both turned a profit during

  • Canon C500 with Ki Pro Quad « Wide Open Camera
transcode to ProRes is a huge time saver ProRes 4K is so efficient and I can easily make dupes and hand off to a anyone who has a Mac to play immediately on their computer Obviously you also get more record time per gigabyte which is also a big money saver ProRes 4K side by side with Raw RMF frames on a computer look almost indistinguishable to the human eye The majority of television spots end up being turned into either ProRes or Avid DNX HD in the end so having a 4K ProRes master makes perfect sense You can playback 4K ProRes in 1 4 resolution on a MacBook air 10 which is pretty remarkable AJA also offers a Thunderbolt Dock for the SSD s so offloading takes just a few minutes per clip where RMF Raw files could take a fair amount of time The Raw process with RMF files is painstaking in that you are dealing with a bunch of still image frames that need to first be placed in order then with either Canon Raw Development software or resolve must be muxed into a usable clip From there you must transcode into ProRes or another format The Quad also accepts 1D LUT input and output for better grading options The price of the Ki Pro Quad is 3 995 but when you add SSD s the dock etc you end up in the 5 200 price range for about 1 hours worth of recording This price is comparable to a Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q which runs about 7K to record C500 footage only in Raw The Codex S is approx 25K and you will require a Vault etc to make it all happen which is beyond most budgets outside of high end commercials and features With the Ki Pro Quad out and other recording options becoming available the C500 has started to pick up some steam in television sports and especially the feature film market I have noticed a lot of films using it for aerial work and as A and B camera more and more each month Its certainly not as popular as an Epic or an F55 but its a nice option for those you like the look of and form factor The sensor renders color and sharpness extremely well and the way it handles high lights is almost Alexa like It certainly cuts well with Alexa If I had a choice again today of which 4K camera to get it would be between a C500 and F55 Mainly for workflow and the fact that they both have 4K 3G SDI outs which I feel is very important in a camera for 3rd party recording options I like that the F55 can record 4K in camera as well as outboard which is fantastic but I probably would want a 4K ProRes recorder on the back end anyway as I foresee 4K ProRes becoming a standard on many productions If Red Epic Dragon had 4K

  • Duclos Canon cinema zoom multi-mount conversion « Wide Open Camera
to hear this until I learned that you had to send in the lens to get the mount swapped and the cost was over 400 per swap Also they had to do the swap or your warranty was voided They were not going to send you both mounts without you first paying a 1200 fee I felt this was so crazy and that clearly they did not understand what their clients needed We just wanted both mounts and a shim kit so if we wanted to swap mounts we could One day I noticed Matt Duclos mentioned a multi mount which instantly perked my interest I remember Cooke zooms having a universal mount that would allow mount swaps from PL to BNCR or Panavision I reached out to Matt and put down money to be one of the first to get the conversion At this point I did not care about Canon warranty as Matt knows what he is doing and the benefit of a quick mount swap far outweighed any risk The lens conversion took a few days and then was sent back to me I got the PL and EF mount options which was all I really needed for my work and in the rental market The conversion with both mounts came out to 2 300 which is worth every penny considering the cost of Canon s service which is not field switchable The other great thing about the Duclos conversion is that it is reversible If you want to go back to the stock mount you can The simplicity of Matt s design is great You simple unscrew the mounting ring remove the mount mount the sub mount which is keyed for alignment and screw it tight Its that easy Duclos also offers Panavision Nikon F on
