  • Restoring Film: The Art of Bringing Classic Films into the Digital Age « Wide Open Camera
9 minute promo docu is a fascinating glimpse into a reality where instead of file corruption issues you have physical damage to your footage that is caused by a number of factors Universal went through and fixed and cleaned up the the footage from its classic films Not only do these amazing restoration artists restore damage they attempt to preserve the natural grain structure of the film to help preserve the integrity of the filmmakers original image It s a really fascinating process seeing films get restored we owe the recent bluray release of Jaws to the restoration Steven Spielberg believes it s a clearer image than the original negative EVER resolved Another film recently recovered from near ruin was The Godfather This film owed lots of its image loss from its unexpected success upon release The negative was copied beyond usual limits and suffered because of it eventually destroyed by the repeated process The process Paramount had to go through to restore the print actually required them to cobble together private collector s stock of the film and piece together the best version of the movie from multiple prints Take some time to appreciate the luxury we have with being able to copy and move our film without degrading the footage in any way Filmmaking is still full of trials and tribulations but the camera and media have become less of a blockade and more invisible when it comes to the difficulties of filmmaking Jared Abrams Visit My Website View My Other Posts Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood California After many years as a professional camera assistant he switched over to still photography About two years ago a new Canon camera changed the way the world sees both motion and still photography He just happened to

  • 4K is Now – Sony has brought 4K to THEIR Consumers « Wide Open Camera
Video Unlimited 4K from Sony service to deliver 4K content to consumers that would be a good first step to actually becoming the distribution standard Allow other TVs to be used with the 4K Ultra HD player and maybe even open it up like Netflix Amazon Hulu and let it be a service on other 4K capable devices in the future so you don t have to buy the Sony box 4K distribution should be a service if the service is good it will help them sell hardware if it s bad has incomplete catalogs or just plain is too expensive they are fighting a losing battle If all of that happens Sony will corner the 4K market Right now they are just the first fish in the pond and I fully expect someone to come along a drop a whale in it sooner or later However Sony did do something interesting they have a 4K Showcase Details are vague but I do hope this becomes a distribution method available to filmmakers with 4K content who are looking to share it in it s original format a variety of short form videos are also included that showcase the immersive experience and fine detail that only 4K can deliver 1 When you see the collection of Indie films shorts and 4K gallery videos that demonstrate the full capabilities of end to end 4K video production we think you ll agree there s nothing else like it As usual Sony delivers amazing aspects next to disappointments if they can t deliver 4K to the masses it s obvious the floodgates are opening and someone will Jared Abrams Visit My Website View My Other Posts Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood California After many years as a professional camera assistant he switched over to still photography About two years ago a new Canon camera changed the way the world sees both motion and still photography He just happened to be in the right place at the right time Related Posts MicroGAFFER Pocket size gaffer tape for the Modern Production Posted on 28 May 2013 Quick Take Benro Travel Flat Tripod Review Posted on 16 January 2012 GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition and Hang Gliding Posted on 26 November 2012 More Rumors About Canon Super 35 Video Camera Update 3 Cameras Posted on 03 October 2011 12 Essential Set Etiquette Tips Mastering Film Posted on 02 September 2011 Kickstarter Day Three Oh What A Feeling Posted on 31 August 2011 joshua The reason for ownership of physical media for me as a filmmaker had always been the bonus material commentaries etc If that came bundled with a digital media buy there wouldn t be much more for comparison http natums com Nate Weber Very true I do value that on the discs I do have natums Very good point that s definitely a perk of physical ownership that isn t common with digital ownership http www military com spouse military deployment reintegration

  • Canon 70D: What to Like and Dislike « Wide Open Camera
believed the ISO performance would be much improved yesterday but so far I ve seen no sign that it s anything groundbreaking the three 3200 ISO shots in the video above were clean but that wasn t out of the realm of possibility on the 60D This lack of improvement is likely due to the AF technology in the sensor and the fact that it s now 20MP so it s not the end of the world but it would have been nice to see an APS C camera from Canon compete with FF low light ISO levels If you are using manual glass say hello to almost no improvements over the 60D Wifi is nice but I d guess most people won t be dumping their 60D just for that So obviously this camera is all about the autofocus a big feature for consumers and a potentially awesome tool for professionals but I highly doubt it s a total gamechanger like they claim FS700 has great autofocus also but that s not it s big selling point to filmmakers I could go into the details on the 70D s autofocus but Imaging Resource has got it down pretty solid so go check out their write up It s long as hell but explains all 4 of the focus settings and why it s better than the competitors autofocus implementations I think this camera is a tell tale sign of where Canon is taking the DSLR range they are trying to make it more user friendly for consumers they will build special Cinema models intended to appease the video crowd and they will keep focusing on their photo abilities first for all other models MSRP on the 70D is expected to be 1 199 for body only 1 349 with the 18 55 STM lens or 1 549 with the 18 135 STM lens Jared Abrams Visit My Website View My Other Posts Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood California After many years as a professional camera assistant he switched over to still photography About two years ago a new Canon camera changed the way the world sees both motion and still photography He just happened to be in the right place at the right time Related Posts Canon C500 with Ki Pro Quad Posted on 05 July 2013 ZOOMS VS PRIMES DAMMIT Posted on 29 December 2010 A R3D Workflow Posted on 14 December 2011 Get Lit Super Easy 3 Point Lighting Posted on 21 August 2011 GoPro Hero 4 Specs Leaked More Rumors Posted on 13 August 2014 Making Film Podcast with Thomas Roberts Posted on 21 July 2011 Nez Good write up ta drao101 No headphone jack a con for a camera focused towards amateur filmmakers natums Definitely true Didn t mention it because there are ways to monitor audio via the USB pretty easily and I was focused on professional filmmaking who basically only use the onboard sound 1 8 input on the camera

  • Thunderbolt 2: Are Your Peripherals Obsolete? « Wide Open Camera
with Thunderbolt 2 expansion chassis Magma says it will be as simple as swapping out PCIe cards once those cards are available Their device is unusual compared to many other Thunderbolt devices though so don t expect your Thunderbolt hubs to suddenly have twice the bandwidth Back when I made my plea for a Mac Cube style Mac Pro I wasn t expecting a new Thunderbolt standard so soon Now that they ve released a new standard 2 years after the original I am kind of hoping for 3 to come quickly There are shortcomings and benefits to the new Mac Pro but for me I just don t need 2 GPUs 90 of the time I m cutting 1080p on a NLE not 4K raw I d rather offline my edit than saturate my system with that unnecessary workload If a 16x PCIe 3 0 based Thunderbolt 3 came out soon I could get full speed support with new GPUs as the become available so I can buy the latest GPU when I really need that extra power There is no reason for me to spend an extra grand on one soldered into my system that might be outdated by the time I have a project that requires me to have that extra power This is why I think the Thunderbolt 2 standard is a stopgap between 1 and 3 when we will suddenly have the possibility to treat our computers as a modular device again adding and removing peripherals quickly and with just a few cables The downside of moving to all external and modular devices is everything requires it s own power now no longer is the Mac Pro the power source for all your storage and peripherals How do you feel about a new standard so soon Is it leaving you feeling like you have obsolete hardware Or were you never able to saturate the full 10Gbps anyway so this just means your next system will have more bandwidth to spare 4K monitoring a gamechanger for anyone Jared Abrams Visit My Website View My Other Posts Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood California After many years as a professional camera assistant he switched over to still photography About two years ago a new Canon camera changed the way the world sees both motion and still photography He just happened to be in the right place at the right time Related Posts Arri Announces AMIRA A 2K Documentary Style Camera Under 20K Posted on 13 September 2013 Looking Ahead To Twenty Eleven Thank You All So Much Posted on 31 December 2010 Kickstarter Day Two The Reward System Posted on 29 August 2011 A workflow for shooting raw video on the 5D Posted on 16 May 2013 Three Axis Gyro Stabilizer EasyGimbal For The GoPro Hero 3 Posted on 05 October 2013 The Board Of Education Teaser Trailer Posted on 19 September 2011 MarcB1969 TB2 just isn t fast enough to leverage for a future
