confined locational aspect of the shoot HDSLR was the format of choice We were armed with two Canon 7Ds mounted on shoulder rigs I operated the A camera which was mainly tight on will on a longer lens Brent Johnson our B camera operator was on a wider lens getting the two or three shot Our sound engineer Mike Ravetti was equipped with my TASCAM DR 100 recorder and a Sennheiser wireless lav and cardioid mic We lit all the interior shots with daylight spill from the windows and fill light was provided by a Litepanels MiniPlus flood For our exteriors we used an ARRI tungsten kit gelled with CTB to add fill to the daylight One thing that really shined on the shoot was the fader ND filer set from LCW It s really great to set your taking stop and just dial in your ND to get an even exposure And at 160 ISO at a F5 6 8 split the Canon 7D looked amazing on a 40 HDTV Since this was the pilot of the series our total running time was around 5 or 6 minutes If the show is picked up we should be working with the 22 minute timeline I look forward to sharing the final product with you all as soon as I m cleared to do so Enjoy the short quick take below Cheers Jared Abrams Visit My Website View My Other Posts Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood California After many years as a professional camera assistant he switched over to still photography About two years ago a new Canon camera changed the way the world sees both motion and still photography He just happened to be in the right place at the right time Related Posts Zylight LED Lighting

they ll last a good long time Hawkwoods distribution box Sometimes the two additional Dtap connections aren t enough and if that s the case then Hawkwoods might have the solution for you They offer a battery system featuring a Lithium Ion brick v lok fitted to a power distribution box with 5 d tap sockets which ought to be more than enough to power the parts you need The Switronix system is built around a v lok battery so you ought to be able to purchase the distribution box on its own and simply add that to your system One of the d tap sockets will be used to power the camera and for this you ll need one of Hawkwoods dummy battery adaptors This probably sounds like a lot of extra bits to buy and it would be The distribution box comes in two flavours nominal voltage and regulated 12v I would also go for the regulated supply but that will set you back 160 260 with the nominal coming in at half the price 80 130 The dummy adaptor will set you back 80 130 which does seem like a lot You don t have to buy the distributor box to use the Hawkwoods system but the Switronix offering just has more going for it with the additional d taps and the quick release plate if you re just going for a simpler setup Switronix powerbase with quick release plate Finally what about powering the Zoom H4N This is one bit of info I wish I d put more effort into researching before I left for Hong Kong as the Zoom takes a 5V input rather than a 12v one Switronix now offer a Powertap Zoom converter cable which will take care of this for you It s a little clumsy but it ll remove one of the most irritating battery replacement devices in the whole setup I was having to change batteries every 1 45 out in Hong Kong Not cool That cable retails at 89 95 and can be found in a few shops online B H Zacuto and Evs amongst others As a limey brit getting cables shipped over from the States isn t ideal so I pinged Hawkwoods an email to see if they had a solution for this and it turns out they do That retails at 55 89 and will do exactly the same job Drop Daniel Wiseman an email and tell him what you need and they ll make up the cable to the length you need Top banana Powertap Zoom H4N cable So now you re powering everything off the v lok battery and you re feeling pretty smug just remember one problem you ve created for yourself cables Never go into battle without cable ties and whatever you do don t forget to charge up that Powerbase Hawkwoods simple system Jared Abrams Visit My Website View My Other Posts Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood California

a few tests with it In all honesty we are still on the fence with this camera It seems like we will have to get some very fast glass and may need to add some type of filtration to get the look we want We are excited about the audio inputs and hot swappable SD cards We are planning on using it for our upcoming SXSW documentary about the JAG35 crew in Austin We got a few tips from HD Warrior on some of the settings for the AF100 It s worth checking out just for the killer Scottish Accents on the demo video Thanks to 16 X 9 Inc for hooking us up with the DV Balancer It costs around 650 US Jared Abrams Visit My Website View My Other Posts Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood California After many years as a professional camera assistant he switched over to still photography About two years ago a new Canon camera changed the way the world sees both motion and still photography He just happened to be in the right place at the right time Related Posts Becoming A Specialist VS Jack hack Of All Trades Posted on 30 April 2012 Lucky 13 Apparel Promo Get More Clients Posted on 07 July 2011 Quick Take Video Aviator Travel Jib From Nice Industries Posted on 28 February 2013 Canon 5D3 Photos And New Date Of March 2 2012 Posted on 27 February 2012 Tweet To Win A Formatt Hitech Warm 2 Cool Filter Posted on 21 March 2012 Sony Announces The A7 and A7R New Full Frame Cameras 2300 US Posted on 16 October 2013 Sponsors Projects New Product Recent Posts Four Foot Soft Light Wand By Michael Sutton DIY Under 70 Red Announces Red Raven A Sub 6K

to watch it But what of the festivals Are they still relevant or are they losing there impact as audiences simply by pass traditional filters of content and build relationships directly with the filmmakers Not yet it would seem The festivals still offer an opportunity to be found nowhere else that of human interaction And around the fringes of every festival sit the opportunists the renegades with a film and the chutzpah to take it and attempt to get it seen Festivals are as much about deal making as they are about exhibition and you just never know whom you might bump into The Garcia brothers Jehu and Misa are these filmmakers Well known figures in the DSLR community as creators of cost effective support rigs for HDSLR cameras Misa also runs The Whistle Bait a monthly event where the 50 s meets the 60 s and patrons show up at the clubs in downtown LA for a night of rockabilly dancing and live burlesque After two years of working with filmmakers to develop his support equipment Misa decided to turn filmmaker himself and document the events he had created With the short film in the can his next goal is a festival experience and Austin s SXSW is the target Dreaming in Austin will follow Misa and Jehu as they attempt navigate the structures mores and etiquette of film festivals and get their film seen by the right people We will also be picking up interviews with the stars of the festival for an insight into the sharp end of the process as well as engaging with other fringe filmmakers at the festival This process can resemble a game and we ll be borrowing the language of classic strategy games like Risk to tell the story of the gambles

the camera comfortably for 8 hours non stop shooting and didn t bother turning off either between takes It just goes and goes and goes The camera attaches via a quick release mechanism or if you re going handheld mount it wherever you see fit via 1 4 threads Two on the side and one on the bottom Four bar gauge makes it easy to check charge Short cable makes it tricky to mount to handheld rigs If there s one criticism I have of the Powerbase it s that I d have liked a longer cable for my handheld rig so I could get the weight of the battery further back over my shoulder for maximum counter balance but that s a small criticism Really the reason I love this battery solution so much is that when I get back to base after a big shoot the last thing I want to be doing is worrying about all the batteries I have to charge up I ve gotten used to spending hours waiting for four or five DSLR batteries to charge one at a time not to mention my monitor batteries Not so with the Powerbase One battery about two and a half hours to charge it go to sleep wake up shoot Easy It s so so convenient I ve probably spent as much on single LP e6 batteries as I have on this single Switronix unit Shooting handheld all day it gave me a useful counterweight on my rig but it just meant I could save on battery weight for the monitor and didn t have to worry about battery changes at all Great solution Jared Abrams Visit My Website View My Other Posts Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood California After many years as
