    killed more people than traffic crashes or weapons They killed far more people than handguns so we really should treat them as if they re a loaded gun in our house The Attorney General says people should safely store the prescribed medications they need and even lock them up if necessary Drug Takeback Day has been getting old medications off the streets for about five years When the federal government discontinued funding for the program Attorney General Brad Schimel decided he had to find a way to continue the program in Wisconsin because the safe and proper disposal protects people and the environment He says they just keep collecting more and more all the time In May I think it was we collected over 39 000 pounds that s weighed out of the bottles on the net weight In October we beat that by collecting over 44 000 pounds so last year alone over 83 000 pounds That is four semi trucks full of medications that we took and safely incinerated There are collection boxes in many communities and many are available 24 hours every day Here s a map What used to be a one day concentrated effort has become a week long event in some areas especially with the expanded placement of 24 hour drop boxes for medications at police and social service agencies One Portage County location collected 15 pounds in 15 minutes Friday Another benefit of Drug Takeback Day is keeping the pharmaceuticals out of the environment Unused or expired medicine should never be flushed or poured down the drain because water reclamation facilities and sewage treatment plants are not designed to remove trace amounts of chemicals that are showing up in rivers and lakes around the world More information about Drug Takeback Day is available
