  • It's Only a Game: Expert Advice for Parents on Navigating Youth Sports - Your Teen Magazine
likely lead to burnout and maladaptive behaviors From an athlete development viewpoint playing multiple sports at young ages develops better all around athleticism which in the end usually trumps early specialization So you re better off having a child who plays lots of sports finds the one that s the best fit and then during the middle school high school years putting a lot into that sport That said the kids who are going to make it at the high school level are very likely going to be the best athletes So despite playing year round baseball from age 9 if your kid is not a great athlete it s unlikely they will make the varsity baseball team You cannot get around that So how do we capture those less athletic kids back into the world of sports My personal thinking has been changing on this and it s been influenced a lot by a book called Spark by Harvard psychologist John Ratey He talks about the influence of exercise on brain and learning For the vast majority of kids by the time they have finished high school their physical fitness pursuits will be an individual pursuit They will be a cyclist a runner or a swimmer and they are pretty much done with team sports So if you have a child that is funneled off a team by 13 or 14 have them run cross country do track or swim These are the individual sports they will likely pursue when they are older so why not give them a good basis to start from That s a great point Is there a role for our school s physical education programs to take a lead with this sort of thing and encourage kids to continue to stay active even if they are no longer on a team I would encourage everyone to look at the PBS special on the Naperville School District in Illinois They changed their whole focus in their school district away from team sports to individual sports They got heart rate monitors treadmills and climbing walls The obesity rate in the Naperville School District is 3 percent It s unbelievable what they have done There s been some criticism that it s a wealthy school district and that it s not reproducible but that program has been replicated in non wealthy districts There s a myth out there that kids are either born athletes or they re not But agility balance and coordination are learned Some kids pick them up quickly and others take more time Additionally when they ve done this academic performance has actually gone up Another problem is with the grading system for gym Of course all of the elite athletes are going to get the best grades One of the things that came from Naperville was looking at heart rate monitors to grade based on individual effort So that if you have a fourteen year old girl who seems not be running that

  • Great Reads for Teens: Em & Em by Linda Budzinski -
under the identity of Ember O Malley Although she s happy for the new start she has trouble being away from her boyfriend Zach Ember integrates surprisingly easily into her new school landing a job as a photographer at the school newspaper She is charmed by the cowboy editor Charles and becomes confused as to where heart belongs Zach or Charles Amid the romantic struggles there are other difficult issues mostly surrounding the date rape drug Rohypnol The writer handles the introduction of the drug and its effects on Emily in a very logical way with no lecturing The reader is right there with Emily and the other teens as they discuss and deal with the drug and with drinking and partying in general I highly recommend this novel to teen girls though I think it could be important for teen boys as well Em s two boyfriends in the novel Zach and Charles are kind and caring and speak nicely to her in contrast to other male characters n the book It s reassuring to see that Em is drawn to the kind boys and stays clear of the others I m looking forward to reading more from this thoughtful and entertaining new author Kendell Shaffer is a young adult novelist and teaches screenwriting to teens in Los Angeles Learn more at kendellshaffer com Teen Review By Sydney Eliot F r om the moment I read the first paragraph of Em Em I was wrapped up in the story of Emily or Ember as her new friends know her and refused to put the book down It is full of relatable characters thrilling plot twists and enticing storytelling Emily pulls you into her beautiful yet terrifying world and won t let you go until the unexpected and mysterious ending

  • Book Review: Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell -
success including the somewhat shocking number of hours approximately 10 000 that it takes to become masterful in a given area As a parent some of this information gave me pause For example I grew up an avid skier in Colorado Based on my children s physicality and coordination I think they would be excellent skiers too Maybe even world class racers However having parents who are actors and live in California provides neither the locale nor the means to ski at all Cross that future off their list On the other hand we are artists and live in a major city so they have been afforded some pretty incredible opportunities some of which seem to be playing right into their interests and talents So as I lie awake at night I try to take comfort in that The best part of reading Outliers was watching the way it affected my son Finneas who was reading it at the same time Instead of focusing on any areas in which he might have less advantage he was hugely inspired by the individuals and groups The Beatles Bill Gates etc Gladwell writes about in the book and the incredible amount of focused practice and hard work that they put into action I highly recommend reading this book and encouraging your teens to read it too It will give you lots to talk about Maggie Baird is an actress She has appeared on many TV shows including The X Files Six Feet Under and Chicago Hope and is a well known voice over artist she s Samara in Mass Effect Baird is also a singer songwriter and she co wrote and starred in the award winning independent movie Life Inside Out Teen Review By Finneas O Connell I read Outliers when I turned 16 and it changed the way I approach each day Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell is a study of the cause and effect of greatness The book documents many unique cases of mastery hypothesizing that in order to truly be a master in any field one must have devoted around 10 years and at least 10 000 hours to that field Subjects in this book include my favorite band The Beatles Microsoft founder Bill Gates the smartest man in the world Chris Langan physicist J Robert Oppenheimer and countless others I found each story in the book to be totally fascinating compelling and inspiring and of course the stories are all true The book talks about the two primary keys to success the hard work put in and the opportunity to work hard For example if you want to be a competitive gymnast you have to practice and train all the time but you also need to live close to a gymnasium and have a support system of parents and coaches who are willing and available to help you We may not have control over the latter aspect but we can fulfill our part by seizing every opportunity and being prepared
